i am 36 years old and i have saved every book i have owned since i was a child. i have a small library of books and it is my pride and joy. some were expensive and some i bought at yard sales for 10 cents. my books range from the old conan the barbarian books to little house on the prairie to civil war to the french revelation to danielle steele. my kids now read these books and even add their own books to the shelves. i wouldnt give up my old books for anything. when i go into someones house for the first time the first thing i look for is the book shelf to see what they read and what their interests are. you can learn more about a person by what they read then whats in their medicine cabinet. reading the comments i was happy to see that there are still people who value books.
I was extremely grateful and relieved when I found out my parents saved our favorite childhood book. I don't know about my siblings, but I will forever cherish that fairy book with poems. I smiled when I read your comment. I hope your children cherish them as much.: )
If you collect books, that's a collection that you treasure -- no need to declutter it. BUT if you look closely, as I have to my little library, you may discover random books that give you no pang of regret if you take them to Good Will. Then, your "greatest hits" shine even brighter.

It is a smashing one off guide for decluttering your home without the headache. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my mate after a lifetime of fighting got great success with it.
It is suggested to make your bed last, as this allows your bed to cool down and dry out. Also having some sun on the bed as well will help kill any light sensitive bacteria and reduce any potential of bed bugs or others.
I always put an extra shower curtain rod inside the tub wall as high as the curtain, can hang towels, tub mat or wet clothes on a hanger. Out of sight behind curtain

The baskets up the stairs are DANGEROUS! NEVER put anything on stairs - In case of fire or loss of power in the night they become death-causers! Even one misstep can bring a person crashing down! Or interfere with rescuers who need to go upstairs to help someone! As an Internationally Certified Architectural and Interior Designer I could be sued for suggesting such a thing in even a residential structure (and commercial safety codes are very much more strict) STAIRS are not intended for storage!

Actually, I have thinned out some of my college text books. I had over 10 math books, dozens of outdated journals, and so many children's books they took up half a wall. I do not have children and passed the books on to children who would enjoy them and donated the text books to a school.

I don't have a junk drawer....I have a vintage plastic mint green cookie jar/canister that is a darling accent piece, that I use instead.....hides the odds and ends, looks cute AND frees up a drawer!
I have a lidded ceramic pot, circumference about 14" which is the junk place: stray playing cards, twist-ties, reciepts (some ancient). It sits on the stove (no fire hazard) and actually comes up with interesting things sometimes.

I used to defrost my freezer in the winter but this year due to appliance failure--had to do it at the beginning of summer! I must say defrosting when it was warm was faster and easier for me. I just filled coolers and placed them indoors. Now I do prefer if my fridge is going to die for it to be winter! LOL It was very hard living out of a cooler for 3 weeks while waiting for a fridge part this summer!!
That was kind of snotty. I live in Arizona. There’s never a good time to put anything outside, ever. Plus I like to clean out my fridge once a month. It takes a fraction of the time that way.
If you have the kind of television that allows you to velcro remotes to them then buy a new television. Or better still buy a universal remote. Much better idea.

I tried to sell my old college textbooks, but I had waited too long and since they have come out with new editions every semester, no one wanted to buy my textbooks....And I would feel like a murderer if I throw them in the trash! Now I'm stuck with these textbooks that no one wants:( All the other books I own I will NEVER get rid of.

I thought the same thing - no way would I do that. I've had cords overheat and scorch in the past and that's just literally adding fuel to a potential fire.
There are strips of thin plastic with a lock which are sold specifically manage cords. Rubber bands rot really soon. I don't know their names but places like Best Buy would have them
Putting books on top of the fridge will make them mouldy and damp. Also, do not put wood in your food cupboard (the organization of spices idea) as it will encourage paper mites and flour mites.
Some good ideas here. I don't like to lend my things because I have to remember to get them back. (3 things I never lend, my man, money and books.) People get amnesia, forgetting they got the item from you. However if a situation arises and you have to lend a book, a tool, garment, or other item, take a picture of the person holding the item in your house on your phone, then when they "forget" they borrowed, you can gently remind them with a proof picture. It works every time. All the best!
I've been putting my sheet and doona sets in the matching pillowcase for years and it really does tidy up your linen closet and you never have to hunt to find matching linen. As to getting rid of books though?... I just can't, and ,honestly, don't want to do it. It's monsterous!

I work at a public library so I want to offer some practical advice. Before taking books to a library call the library to find out if they accept used books in great shape (not moldy or musty) to put in their collections or add to their used book sales. Please don't give libraries old sets of encyclopedias that they will have to dispose of. Old encyclopedias do not have current information for patrons. Call the library first. Save time, gasoline and an aching back.

I keep a nice copper pail (smallish...size of easter pail) on coffee table and put remotes in them so we can ACCESS them from the couch. I think that's better than walking to the TV to detach them--pail matches our decor. I don't know about the cereal box letter sorter...and others whereby you have to buy materials and spend a day crafting. Sheesh...you can get beautiful wooden or acrylic type organizers in any size and different compartments for like...$10! I much rather buy cheap acrylic ones that you can see through without spending a day crafting and have to make another in a few months because it tore or got wet!. There's even a famous crafter on youtube.com who raves her BEST organizers are from the dollar store. Save your money and visit the dollar store...all manner, color and fashion of baskets to fit your lifestyle. There are way easier ways to tackle clutter...but by all means, it needs to be done or you end up just shuffling your past and are unable to move forward. You want good space saving tips? VISIT AN RV BLOGGER who lives in one full time with kids. They are experts on displacing "stuff" and getting items that do double and triple duty...as their space is prime concern for comfort.
Dolores Neilson I think the velcroed remote idea is supposed to be for when you're not watching tv....you stick them "wherever" but when you are going to sit down to watch a show, you grab them on the way to the couch....it eliminates the "where did the remote go?" problem.

My favorite organizing tool comes from the garden department! A whole roll of 'hook n loop' in green for tieing up plants is great for cords, rolls of wrapping paper and tons of things you want to corral.

Every time I've done one of these hare-brained declutter things, I've ended up with deep regrets about giving away something I actually needed. No more following someone else's rules for me. From now on, I decide what I want to keep or throw out. Hard and fast rules are just an invitation to overdoing and regret. Make your OWN rules!
Serai3 I agree in principal. We can make our own minds up about what we need. But I think that is what it is saying. Just giving some ideas how to go about it. There were some hints that were either done to death or I already knew or could work out for myself. But one or two were new ideas to me and one in particular I am going to do.
When I choose things to de-clutter, I put the object in a special closet, then after a month or so I decide whether I really want to get rid of what's in the closet. Holding items out of site for a while gives me a chance to reconsider whether something needs to go or stay.
@@sylviariggs4180 See, that wouldn't work for me. I've had insane regrets about something I got rid of YEARS ago. The thing for me is to stop thinking I HAVE to get rid of things. I don't. Nobody does, unless you're moving to a smaller space without any storage. This idea that things would be "better" if I get rid of that thing over there or that I "need" the money I could get for that thing over there - those ideas are what make the process an inevitable path to regret. Nobody HAS to declutter. People should only do it if it's something they really WANT to do.

I got a funny one. I bring books to donate to the free library in my town, only one problem.....it's only as big as a shoe box and already full. If it was gonna be made that small.....why even bother?

I'm wary about baskets! I love them, so they become clutter filled with clutter. I have a few and make sure I don't buy every one I like. With a glass bowl inside for water, they make nice flower pots in summer.
I too clung to old books thinking I would never declutter. Until, I had to move out of state and they cost a fortune to ship. Now, a kindle and about 10 books which I plan to donate remain.
I love my books too, but old textbooks should be donated I agree. Old children’s books sometimes go out of print, they are memories of my past, I enjoy reading them to my grandkids and they enjoy a book vs/ a tablet to read on.
Am I the only one who totally did not understand the chart for #9? I even paused the video and tried to read it. Let me preface this my saying for the most part, I enjoyed this video and really like some of the tips. However, I think a few of them are very bad ideas. Some of them may even be dangerous. Numbers 10 & 19 both seem like a fire hazard to me. #25. I keep my cleaning supplies in the room where I am actually going to use them. For example, the tub/toilet cleaner stay in the bathroom, the oven/counter cleaner stay in the kitchen. Yes, I have multiple bottles of windex, but it saves lots of time. Plus, since it is easier to just grab the bottle, it helps me to be a bit more motivated to clean the bathroom mirror or the front of my stove since I don't have to run into the next room to grab the supplies I need to clean. To me, this is just common sense. Why would I keep all of my supplies in just one place? #26. If you are going to hang your towels on hooks, you need at least 2 hooks per towel. This way the towel can dry properly. A wet towel means bacteria and mild are going to grow much more quickly-leading to musty smelling towels, etc. #36. DO NOT keep medicine in the bathroom! The heat and moisture will destroy it! Don't the packages all say something like, "Store in a cool, DRY place"?
At the age of 79, I moved to Queretaro, Mexico on 11-2-2021, because the USA was too dangerous and expensive. I always gave away all my life, and I still do, but it was so freeing to have everything removed from my apartment, and giving my kitchen and bath preps to my super nice friends. It is $800 per month less expensive living in Mexico, and my rent includes a furnished apartment, all utilities, WiFi, and maid service. My apartment is in a 24/7 secured gated community, and I have groceries delivered to my home, as I did in the USA. I have a beautiful view of the city, and the people are so kind and respectful.
Getting rid of my books was the best thing I ever did LOL having them all in an electronic version means I can carry them all in my purse and have tons of extra space! I'm not a person who needs every visitor to see my books on a shelf.
Why do some people think people who have books on shelves are trying to "show them off"? That says more about the visiting company than the owner of the books!
To those complaining about the book thing: Gotta admit I still have a lot of books, more than 5 book cases, but I got rid of plenty, and from time to time I get rid of more. Also I am a commuter on train, so I now mostly buy online, (and download from libraries). Sooo much easier to carry an electronic pad than lug around books! A wise woman once said to me before I made the electronic transition; "When the printing press made reading available to the masses, trust me there were many elite whining that the slaves did such nice scroll work!" Sometimes change is good.

How about letting people live the way they want to? Not everyone needs to aspire to your minimalist lifestyle. I happen to love my books and won't be getting rid of them. Also, having the tangible book makes it easy to go back and reference it. Also, many people don't like having to re-purchase a book we already own for the digital version. (Many things are also NOT available in digital form.) Also, internet doesn't always work, whereas a book doesn't need electricity or wifi to be read. There are plenty of reasons to keep your favorite books in physical form. You know, if you were educated, you would know all this stuff already.

#32 We have 4 seasons where live, temps from below 0 to over 100 at times. Of course I haven't worn items in 3 months. I would need to go with a year on that, at least.

Great vid! Something that has helped me in the closet & life- It takes some time, but I organize my clothes in outfits from largest to smallest (it does help that I'm not a fashionista), then I know the next week's clothes are smaller. So, if I don't want to wear the same things over & over, I had better exercise! And it makes it so much easier to get rid of clothes (no Does it fit, do I still like it? It's in stages!)

I used to defrost my freezer in the winter but this year due to appliance failure--had to do it at the beginning of summer! I must say defrosting when it was warm was faster and easier for me. I just filled coolers and placed them indoors. Now I do prefer if my fridge is going to die for it to be winter! LOL It was very hard living out of a cooler for 3 weeks while waiting for a fridge part this summer!!

I let out a scream. My son said "Way to go, Grampa." I cried "Ya can't throw out books, Poopsie!" (in mah best Southern accent, even though we're Canadian) "that's... that's sacrilegious!" "Well, just don't expect me to carry any downstairs, ya goof."

I tried to sell my old college textbooks, but I had waited too long and since they have come out with new editions every semester, no one wanted to buy my textbooks....And I would feel like a murderer if I throw them in the trash! Now I'm stuck with these textbooks that no one wants:( All the other books I own I will NEVER get rid of.

I lived 27 years with a hoarder of stuff. One day when he was out of town on business I rented a dumpster and had it positioned in our driveway directly under a second floor window. (we have a 6 bedroom house). Two friends and I filled it up in one week just from the junk in the attic... and he never noticed the stuff was gone. The hoarder and I are divorced but living with one is a challenge. Your show is an inspiration.
Modern TVs don't have "sides"!
NO WAY I would use socks to corral cords. That's too flammable.
I thought the same thing - no way would I do that. I've had cords overheat and scorch in the past and that's just literally adding fuel to a potential fire.
The socks are to be used for STORING cords, not using them!
I use strong rubber bands and velcro ties.
There are strips of thin plastic with a lock which are sold specifically manage cords. Rubber bands rot really soon. I don't know their names but places like Best Buy would have them

Some good ideas here. I don't like to lend my things because I have to remember to get them back. (3 things I never lend, my man, money and books.) People get amnesia, forgetting they got the item from you.
However if a situation arises and you have to lend a book, a tool, garment, or other item, take a picture of the person holding the item in your house on your phone, then when they "forget" they borrowed, you can gently remind them with a proof picture. It works every time.

I've been putting my sheet and doona sets in the matching pillowcase for years and it really does tidy up your linen closet and you never have to hunt to find matching linen.
As to getting rid of books though?... I just can't, and ,honestly, don't want to do it. It's monsterous!

I work at a public library so I want to offer some practical advice. Before taking books to a library call the library to find out if they accept used books in great shape (not moldy or musty) to put in their collections or add to their used book sales. Please don't give libraries old sets of encyclopedias that they will have to dispose of. Old encyclopedias do not have current information for patrons. Call the library first. Save time, gasoline and an aching back.
Our library has been converting to digital for several years. They DO NOT accept books in any condition.

I keep a nice copper pail (smallish...size of easter pail) on coffee table and put remotes in them so we can ACCESS them from the couch. I think that's better than walking to the TV to detach them--pail matches our decor.
I don't know about the cereal box letter sorter...and others whereby you have to buy materials and spend a day crafting. Sheesh...you can get beautiful wooden or acrylic type organizers in any size and different compartments for like...$10! I much rather buy cheap acrylic ones that you can see through without spending a day crafting and have to make another in a few months because it tore or got wet!. There's even a famous crafter on youtube.com who raves her BEST organizers are from the dollar store. Save your money and visit the dollar store...all manner, color and fashion of baskets to fit your lifestyle.
There are way easier ways to tackle clutter...but by all means, it needs to be done or you end up just shuffling your past and are unable to move forward.
You want good space saving tips? VISIT AN RV BLOGGER who lives in one full time with kids. They are experts on displacing "stuff" and getting items that do double and triple duty...as their space is prime concern for comfort.
Dolores Neilson I think the velcroed remote idea is supposed to be for when you're not watching tv....you stick them "wherever" but when you are going to sit down to watch a show, you grab them on the way to the couch....it eliminates the "where did the remote go?" problem.

My favorite organizing tool comes from the garden department! A whole roll of 'hook n loop' in green for tieing up plants is great for cords, rolls of wrapping paper and tons of things you want to corral.

Every time I've done one of these hare-brained declutter things, I've ended up with deep regrets about giving away something I actually needed. No more following someone else's rules for me. From now on, I decide what I want to keep or throw out. Hard and fast rules are just an invitation to overdoing and regret. Make your OWN rules!

Serai3 I agree in principal. We can make our own minds up about what we need. But I think that is what it is saying. Just giving some ideas how to go about it. There were some hints that were either done to death or I already knew or could work out for myself. But one or two were new ideas to me and one in particular I am going to do.
When I choose things to de-clutter, I put the object in a special closet, then after a month or so I decide whether I really want to get rid of what's in the closet. Holding items out of site for a while gives me a chance to reconsider whether something needs to go or stay.

Nobody does, unless you're moving to a smaller space without any storage. This idea that things would be "better" if I get rid of that thing over there or that I "need" the money I could get for that thing over there - those ideas are what make the process an inevitable path to regret. Nobody HAS to declutter. People should only do it if it's something they really WANT to do.

Lisa Herrling : It's also a good idea to take into account when donating books whether they are in good condition, if they're reference books whether the information is dated, if the place is already flooded with a certain books, ( how many copies of fifty shades of Grey does a community need? )

Waste of electricity (and thus money). Hanging on a rail/bar is free and less work.
Hooks also get towels and clothes out of shape. Plus they fall more easily.

Those baskets make me think of all the baskets I've thrown out of my house when my sister and I did a spring cleaning kind of thing. There were about 15.
I'm wary about baskets! I love them, so they become clutter filled with clutter. I have a few and make sure I don't buy every one I like. With a glass bowl inside for water, they make nice flower pots in summer.
I too clung to old books thinking I would never declutter. Until, I had to move out of state and they cost a fortune to ship. Now, a kindle and about 10 books which I plan to donate remain.

I love my books too, but old textbooks should be donated I agree. Old children’s books sometimes go out of print, they are memories of my past, I enjoy reading them to my grandkids and they enjoy a book vs/ a tablet to read on.

Let me preface this my saying for the most part, I enjoyed this video and really like some of the tips. However, I think a few of them are very bad ideas. Some of them may even be dangerous.
Numbers 10 & 19 both seem like a fire hazard to me.
#25. I keep my cleaning supplies in the room where I am actually going to use them. For example, the tub/toilet cleaner stay in the bathroom, the oven/counter cleaner stay in the kitchen. Yes, I have multiple bottles of windex, but it saves lots of time. Plus, since it is easier to just grab the bottle, it helps me to be a bit more motivated to clean the bathroom mirror or the front of my stove since I don't have to run into the next room to grab the supplies I need to clean. To me, this is just common sense. Why would I keep all of my supplies in just one place?
#26. If you are going to hang your towels on hooks, you need at least 2 hooks per towel. This way the towel can dry properly. A wet towel means bacteria and mild are going to grow much more quickly-leading to musty smelling towels, etc.
#36. DO NOT keep medicine in the bathroom! The heat and moisture will destroy it! Don't the packages all say something like, "Store in a cool, DRY place"?

At the age of 79, I moved to Queretaro, Mexico on 11-2-2021, because the USA was too dangerous and expensive. I always gave away all my life, and I still do, but it was so freeing to have everything removed from my apartment, and giving my kitchen and bath preps to my super nice friends.
It is $800 per month less expensive living in Mexico, and my rent includes a furnished apartment, all utilities, WiFi, and maid service. My apartment is in a 24/7 secured gated community, and I have groceries delivered to my home, as I did in the USA. I have a beautiful view of the city, and the people are so kind and respectful.

Getting rid of my books was the best thing I ever did LOL having them all in an electronic version means I can carry them all in my purse and have tons of extra space! I'm not a person who needs every visitor to see my books on a shelf.

How about letting people live the way they want to? Not everyone needs to aspire to your minimalist lifestyle. I happen to love my books and won't be getting rid of them.
Also, having the tangible book makes it easy to go back and reference it.
Also, many people don't like having to re-purchase a book we already own for the digital version. (Many things are also NOT available in digital form.) Also, internet doesn't always work, whereas a book doesn't need electricity or wifi to be read. There are plenty of reasons to keep your favorite books in physical form.
You know, if you were educated, you would know all this stuff already.

Great vid! Something that has helped me in the closet & life- It takes some time, but I organize my clothes in outfits from largest to smallest (it does help that I'm not a fashionista), then I know the next week's clothes are smaller. So, if I don't want to wear the same things over & over, I had better exercise! And it makes it so much easier to get rid of clothes (no Does it fit, do I still like it? It's in stages!)
