Gary Moore The Real Gear is an overview by Phil Harris on Gary Moore’s Les Paul & Vintage Marshall stack featured in Issue 24 of our FREE online magazine. Phil Harris, curator of the legendary ‘Greenie’ 1959 Les Paul once owned and used by both Peter Green and Gary Moore, kindly brought the guitar back to GI’s London studio - this time to show us how Gary Moore used it. Also on show are the vintage Marshall’s that were also such a part of one of the most remarkable solo sounds of recent years.

“Gary Moore, who died three years ago aged 58, didn’t just leave a huge gap in the role of honour of guitar heroes: there’s a case to be made that his will be the last name on it - or at least on a major chapter of it. Though born in 1952, a few years after most of the guitar superstars who emerged in the mid-1960s, Moore drew on the same musical roots and was among the last of the generation of British (Anglo-Irish in his case, if you prefer) guitar players who reinvigorated the Blues in the last half of the 20th Century. As a child in Belfast, Northern Ireland in the ‘60s, he listened intently to the emerging guitar slingers who redefined the sound of the electric guitar, ripping it away from the whistle-clean tones of Hank Marvin and the Shadows, supplanting it with the darker and more
menacing sound invented, more or less, by Eric Clapton, himself channelling the Blues from its American originators.

Yes it was called the Gary Moore Band ! Back in the early 70's I was a bouncer and Gary Moore came to Lincoln. I was assigned to Gary for the night. I knocked on his dressing room door to introduce myself and he was loosening up with the Les Paul that was Peter Greens, I asked if it was the same guitar that played all those great songs and he said it was, I then asked if I could have a quick tinkle on it and he let me. What a night that was for me!

Real Gear, really? I was hopping to see and hear what GM used and how he got his tone/GM sound! I would have liked to see his amps and the setting along with what pedals he used? As much as I enjoy hearing story's about Gary I'd like to see more of his gear and how he used it! He is still missed!

So wonderful played and sound! I love Gary and play his songs as a guitar player in South Germany in our Rock Band. Unfortunately, I still cannot use a light weight amp to get that tone, still need my heavy weight Marshall amp for it, I am now 70'years old, but who cares that, right?

What a guitar, what a history, and what a player! Thank you Phil for sharing this with all of us dreamers who will never get to touch a real 59'. What I loved about your demo was that you had the Marshall CrAnKEd, and we could really hear how the guitar sounds up loud. The touch sensitivity of this guitar is so amazing. When you rolled the volume off, and picked lightly, it was almost clean, and when you picked a little harder it got louder without touching the volume, and the notes started swelling, and even feeding back. That is the sound I love!! I see all of these demos with early bursts on CZcams, and they either play mostly clean, or with very little gain. BORING!!! I want to hear the character of the guitar, and you fully demonstrated it here, and it is simply AMAZING!! Thank you so much, and, Rest In Peace Gary. Your legacy lives on!

Fantastic video....I've known about Gary Moore for years but it took me almost 5 decades for everything to "click" between my ears and my brain.....now I'm realizing that my own personal style of playing is based more on Gary than anybody else I know. I think the Slash's of the world were heavily influenced by Gary.....but what do I know.....

Great job Phil. I'm sure Gary would approve & he's lucky to have known you too don't forget! The thing for me that I love about Gary's playing was his melodic taste and his controlled aggression on the guitar. When I saw his tribute gig of Hendrix tunes it blew me away - completely. I love the LP sound and in Gary's hands ( love the broomstick comment) it was huge but a strat is a much more unforgiving beast and if you f**k up its glaring - I don't think even Jimi played his songs as well as Gary did them - seriously. Enough blathering - thanks again and rock on. Great playing by the way. All the best from Ireland. 👍👍

Great video of Gary's guitar. Idk how many of us very lucky & very few bastards there are out there whom were either passed down or even luckier were able to purchase a very good professional guitar when we were extremely young. In my case it was a 1963 00-18 Martin flat top. I have pictures of me as a baby with my Father sitting on the couch at our old home place & Dad is holding the guitar playing songs to me. I was so lucky to have been born to 2 parents who were passionate music lovers & great musicians in their own rights. I have carried & tried to baby this guitar as much as I could. I think I was in my early teens when I went to the local music store to attend a so called lesson from this guy who truthfully only taught me 1 thing & that was the finger exercise where you go each finger in half steps all the way up & down all 6 strings & then moving up the neck as far as u can go & then do it again moving the opposite direction towards the nut. Anyways my Father & I walked into the store & I did not have a case at all for the Martin. My Grandfather had bought it & a D-35 at the same time back in 1963 & the 00-18 had been given to my Father as well as a brand new at the time Gibson RB250 gorgeous banjo. Which the banjo became my Father's main instrument in the family band & my Uncle was given the D35 which became his main instrument. So the 00-18 bounced around with my Father from 1963 until he passed it on to me. I was probably around 7 or 8 when I began learning how to place my fingers on the strings to form the 3 greatest chord shapes of all, G, C, & D. My Dad showed me these 3 chords & told me that if I really wanted to learn then he would buy me a chord book, which he did. Mel Bay's chord book. Anyways, we walk in the local music store & they have a beautiful hard case laying out just for me. They said they were cringing every time I would walk in & around with that guitar & no case. So of course like any child I begged my Father for it. Like any great Father he of course purchased it for me @ the price of $100.00 back in the late 80's or early 90's. The guitar is beat to hell. It was that way because it went close to 20 years without a case. I would drag it everywhere with me. It became something akin to the Charlie Brown character Linus who carried around his famous blanket. The guitar became like that to me. It's the only thing that I have that I know of that my Grandfather had played on & my Father. It has become an amazing way to bring me closer to my family ties. I have a real emotional experience just thinking about that guitar. When I get to hold it & play it, it becomes like my own flaming sword or Excalibur. I had to carry around this guitar in this big heavy case along with the RB250 & it was even heavier in its original case. Sadly we lost the Gibson RB250 in pawn because of very hard times just a few years ago. I honestly cry every time I think about it. That banjo represents so much of my Father as well as my Grandfather. I would do anything to get that back. If anyone knows of it please let me know where it's at? Please give me an opportunity to buy it back? It's like having a family member being kidnapped. These instruments evoke so much emotion & connections to my past & memories are great but being able to hold these instruments & play them is something that I cannot describe how good that feels. The banjo was supposed to be passed down to me as well.

I think Gary is sadly missed by many of us. He carried the British-flame as rock shifted from US blues-based guitar into shredding territory. He had a wonderful feel for beautiful melodic-lines that were swiftly washed away by playing fast without feel. The likes of Gary and Bernie Marsden were exceptional musicians swept away by 'shredders' who played fast, understood scales and modes, but couldn't communicate at a deeper-level. I can still play 'Empty Rooms' and emotionally connect in a way that's inaccessible to me through Paul Gilbert or even Steve Vai.

***** Just about any Hamer is better that anything Gibson ever made. Gibson has no relation to the company that made the Les Paul. A corporation bought the name. Same with Fender...decades ago. They are unrelated. In the late 50's they accidentally got some good wood and accidentally made some great sounding ones and they had to borrow them back to copy them because not only did they not have a clue why they sounded good, but they had nobody related to those that made them that even knew. Might as well buy from Korea. Gibson is a joke.

And that applies to almost every American Company. They all sold out and very few people that even know what music is actually make stuff. Landry Amps and an old Hamer or a McNaught. No point in any of the rest existing. Andif you have no money, get an original Hamer Slammer...well made and sound great.

Try buying a vintage Les Paul with a repaired neck (as long as its not too badly repaired), they go quite cheap. I bought a 1968 Les Paul Custom for £1200 a few years back and it's great. They can go for a fortune if in good condition so you could get one.

@A BC D EF G Vibes Hi, well obviously it's not literally haunted. Saying that though, if I were a rock star, I don't think I would want to own it. Peter Green became ill and recluse after owning Greeny, Gary Moore died before hs time. The guitar had a head snap and then was resurrected. It was built incorrectly and its fault became its quality. It's all a little odd. That's all. I have a Gary Moore 2013 tribute Les Paul; it has a weird presence. Don't you feel it?
