  • Want to take a detailed look at how a custom steel road bike is assembled? Then you’re going to love this video.
Today we will be watching Officina Battaglin’s mechanic as he builds a custom Portofino bike in the Battaglin workshop.
    Step by step.
First, Alex will introduce this dream bike.
The frame is a custom Portofino built to the owner’s specifications.
It has been finished in a pink cromovelato that recalls Giovanni Battaglin’s Giro victory.
The owner went for a full Italian build with a 12-speed Campagnolo Record groupset, Campagnolo Bora WTO wheels, and Deda Elementi carbon parts.
After this short introduction, the assembly will begin.
You’ll see the frame inspection made by Giovanni Battaglin in person.
In fact, Giovanni Battaglin always makes sure that his eponymous frames are built to the highest standards.
Next, our mechanic will take center stage.
From putting the grease in the headtube to fine-tuning the rear derailleur, every single step of the process has been documented.
If you want to see how a custom steel bike goes from a bare frame to a race machine ready to hit the road, this is a must-watch video.

In 1996 I had a custom bike built for me. My size, my paint scheme, my parts choices. The entire Record bike was around $4500 with two sets of wheels.

Left out the most tricky part, though, which is right behind the Campagnolo lever bands. No matter how many ways I try it, I can't get the extra little strip positioned right to fully cover the bars without gaps. Sometimes I manage, but after a few rides the tape shifts slightly and there are gaps.

After all, this is not a mass production setting, the whole point of a custom bike, and indeed the specific tone of this video, is patience and craftsmanship, is it not?
