    My vibrations will live on
In vibes on vinyl through the years
People will dance to my waves
    "Psykick Dancehall" - The Fall
January 24, 2018. It’s in the news. Mark E. Smith died, aged 60. The only guy who ever made sense of Punk music, someone wrote. True. We’ll miss him greatly.
He was kind of famous for being Mr Grumpy - as much as he was a good laugh and really nice guy when cameras were not rolling. In front of a mic he immediately turned out his trademark cynical and sarcastic self.
Please note: There is a small discrepancy with the sound in this clipping - we had dire technical problems recording that night… Thus - the „you’re the man with the problems…“
Before and after this short, awkward encounter in this video, which took place after The Fall’s gig at the off beat Night in Munich, Februar 16th in 1989, we had spent several hours talking about music, about his home in Manchester and specially the clubs there, some of which I new, because my sister used to live there for some time.
Mark was a man of the word. We had a lot of beers later that night. He seemed to like being in Germany, he knew a lot about this country’s history. I admired that, too.
After two divorces, he met Eleni Poulou in Berlin and later - I think in 1995 - married her. She is the band's last keyboard player.
With one of the titles The Fall played that night in 89, „Totally Wired“ he sure did predict the world we live in today...
    May he Rest in Peace!
This, btw. is The Falls website - it’s been around for a long time: thefall.org/
Disclaimer: I own no rights to the Song „Totally Wired“ - if you hold any rights to this song and feel offended or your right infringed by this showing (both of which I do not intend), please let me know.

I really like the style of your interviews. Those kind of "punk" artists naturally take pleasure in behaving badly, and obviously need interviewers who confront them with a simple, natural "What`s the matter with you?" Like children enjoying some mischief. I also find it fascinating how he (and other musicians with that so-called "punk" attitude like John Lydon or Phillip Boa) is actually trying so hard to get on a stage, get attention, be seen and validated - and after getting it, does everything he can to put people off and try to prove that he couldn`t care less. Although I think I understand why, I struggle to find it impressive or intelligent.

Yeah I agree, I feel the same way about Zappa’s music - a gifted composer who deliberately challenged the listener’s expectations. Who was tired of the general audience’s tastes and desires. Of course, this becomes a problem when millions of people respond positively to having their expectations subverted - it becomes impossible to subvert their expectations any further.

I knew Mark was ill too and, I said to my husband: "F**K man, that'll be the last time The Fall will play Newcastle because, looking at Mark - bloated with illness and sat in a wheelchair - I bet he's going to die soon, I've just got a feeling. And look what's happened. Well, even though Mark said he didn't believe in G-d, I know he's gone straight to heaven. All the genuine truth speakers do. So bloody well done Mark. It's really rude to speak a language, in front of someone who doesn't speak it. It looks like this incredibly 80s bloke, and the German public, were conspiring to take this piss out of Mark.
Anyway what was the lineup here? I can't remember Fall members well enough to pick them out of a blurry German VHS. Ta for the recording though, Chemento.
If I were an interviewer I'd make it my responsibility to at least listen to a bit of the band's music, and find out the first thing about them, before I interviewed them. Of course that wouldn't help with MES if he's in a mood, or too pissed. I think he'd get mortal as an insult to interviewers he didn't like, challenge them to make some sense, and write an article, about Mark just sitting there babbling and repeatedly pissing his trousers.
