Speaking from experience as a cashier there, when an item says "sale not allowed" on the register there is nothing any associate or manager can do to bypass it. It isn't that we don't want to sell to you, it is just that we literally are not allowed to

Alot of the times we would look it up on the computer or scanner and see what the purchase price the company paid for it and wouldn't sell it below that price. But I don't know how Walmart handles it.
Our policy was when it comes up that price it means its supposed to be shipped back and not sold.
But yeah you can't blame the employees because there's two different situations we would run into at the retail store i was at..
Some of them when they came up on the register it would literally say on the register this product is not available for sale and there is literally nothing the store can do for you that is a corporate controlled thing. Now if it comes up that 3 cents they have some leeway.

Having worked in Walmart Electronics for years, I can explain this for you. Many of the video games are vendor items, not actually owned by Walmart. The vendor sets the prices and the markdowns. At a certain point, the vendor doesn't want to take the loss and instead recalls the game. The recall list is supposed to be taken care of on a weekly basis and the games are supposed to be removed and sent to claims to be returned to the vendor. Usually, the department has little to no help, so these only end up getting handled when the customer stumbles upon them. Sucks for the customer.

If it scans at the till as "Sell not Allowed" there is quite literally NOTHING anyone can do to give it to you. It has been RECALLED, and the store will get a Recall Notice within a day or two. Usually those items aren't picked up by customers before they can be collected, but occasionally Home Office locks the item before sending the Recall Notice and someone tries to buy it in the meantime.
A $0.01 item is something that the person doing "Price Changes" is supposed to collect and take to Claims to be sent back to the supplier because the supplier is asking for it back. Same with a $0.02 item. A $0.03 item is typically a store level associate (usually a department manager authorized by the store manager) just trying to get rid of something that has been sitting around for a long time, not selling, and they're not getting more. If the label has not been updated with the new, much lower price, it's Home Office using the same strategy, except they didn't let the staff know by way of sending a new label file in the morning "Price Changes", which is exactly why someone is supposed to be going through the department occasionally to scan labels and make sure they're all correct.
If those games had been sitting in the bottom of the case for quite some time, no one had been checking like they were supposed to. If they were bundled together in the manufacturer's wrapping, and then didn't scan at the till, they are considered one item and that item either arrived without the barcoded sticker that is linked to the 2 pack game, meaning that barcode would scan at the till for both games together, one item, or someone removed that sticker either for the reason of not knowing better and not asking someone who would (infuriating to find because that little idiot didn't say a word and now you have no idea who it was, so now you have to do group training instead of one on one training), OR it wasn't scanning, in which case a store associate would have to go hunt down a UPC or Item Number that DOES work (usually it's the one listed on the truck report), and print a new sticky label to put over the existing or visible barcode, and sometimes Home Office is made aware that the barcode sticker that came on the item doesn't work and they go in and fix the file so that it does, but a store associate already has done what they could to make the item available to the customer, and sometimes there's this whole situation where the department manager spent a whole hour fixing 3 items so they could be sold, Home Office fixed the existing barcode sticker, but the sticker is covered by the department manager's sticker, which now doesn't work, the cashier told the CSM and the CSM went and spent an hour or more removing all the department manager's stickers, without telling the department manager, who then had no idea until a cashier calls her and says, "The barcode doesn't work," and the department manager thinks, "But I fixed them all two days ago," and goes to look and finds all her labels removed and so scans the manufacturer's barcode sticker and it doesn't work, so goes to her truck report to find the right one AGAIN, takes it to the cashier who has, in the meantime, been joined by the CSM who recognised the box in question because she's the one who removed all the stickers, and then asks the department manager as she gets to the till what's wrong and why it's not working today, to which the department manager replies, "Someone removed all my labels," and the CSM says, "I did. They weren't working," to which the department manager replies, "Why didn't you let me do it? Since I'm the one dealing with it," and the CSM says, "It happened after you left," and the department manager says, "What time did you get here this morning and why didn't you talk to me when you got here? I've been here all day, and now I have to stay late to fix this before I can go home." And the CSM just says, "Sorry," before leaving. And all that happened was Home Office tried to fix the existing barcode stickers on the multipack, and ended up, within 12 hours, just using the barcodes that the department manager put on the items in the first place. But some people just try to fix things themselves without knowing what they're doing.
Big long rant, but either the barcode sticker for the 2 pack game was faulty or missing, another reason why the associates are supposed to be checking everything occasionally. If it was missing, then the barcode for one individual game would get scanned at the till if the cashier wasn't watching for it, and there is a fairly high chance that the individual game, that is, whichever of the 2 games had its back facing out, was more expensive than the 2 pack. That happens A LOT. If the individual game was over $50, then the till will NOT allow the cashier to remove it from the bill without a CSM. There is a faster way (a way that implies faster service for the customer, but the INSTANT that cashier tells the till to remove the game, the CSM is required and the cashier cannot move forward with the transaction.
    Side note:
Please don't be telling the associate that you can just take it to the front with you. If it is locked up, the reason you have to ask for HELP to get it, is because the associate is NOT ALLOWED to let it leave the department\their hands until it is paid for. There is disciplinary action for those associates who frequently hand locked merchandise to customers to take around the store with them. If you have other places in the store to go, they can take it to the Customer service desk for you to collect when you're ready by letting your cashier know you have X and X items at Customer Service. Those items are high theft, and it is presumed that if they give it to you, there is a chance for it to disappear. Don't get offended: if they don't know you from Adam, how can they trust you? If you go in one day and an item isn't locked up and you go in the next day and it is, that means that item is a high theft item and the number they have in stock is vastly different from the number they're supposed to have in stock.

  • @TheKadams1122

Occasionally Street Dated games and CDs and DVDs (sometimes licensed merchandise like toys) ARE locked, but they don't say "Sell not allowed", they say, "Item not found", which is why they are kept in the back in a box with giant orange stickers that say the date on which they can be put on the shelf. Sometimes the vendor will come in and do a sort of audit to see if they've been put on the shelf before the street date, but usually the vendor will just come in to put them out as a pretty display themselves. The store can actually be sued by the company providing these products if the products are displayed for sale early. That particular thing isn't a Walmart thing, it's a universal thing. That's why you'll almost never see it happen.
But yes, the older woman was making up stories in an attempt to not sell the game. That's the kind of service that makes anyone not want to return, and it's also the kind of service that should be taken to the Store Manager or an Assistant Store Manager (ASM) as a Customer Complaint. Walmart's goal as a company is to make the customer happy while minimizing losses.

I came back in and the self check lady wrang up my games and manually changed the price to $10 and said I can only sell you 1 of them. I said why did you change the price and she said because it was wrong and its really suspicious behavior that your buying multiple copies of the same game. I had the manager brought over and she said the same thing. So I had them cancel the transaction. The next day I went back to electronics and they had the games back on the shelf. So the guys back there know me and just rang me up no problem. It really depends on the employees. Some of them take this way to seriously like they are going to loose their job over a 3 cent game. @@TheFlippingAccountant the reason why some go through and others say restricted is because of the price change policy. All price changes are sent by the home office. If an item is accidentally added in for price reduction by home office, is not caught there, but is caught by the store as an active game the was wrongly price changed, home office places a sale restriction on the item to hold for investigation. Most times the price will be readjusted within the next few days to a week.

There are no stores with different policies across each province or state, and any different policies between provinces and states have to do with provincial or state legislation. The only reason two seperate stores within the same province or state do things differently is because 1) the store manager doesn't like to do things the way s\he's supposed to vs s\he does, and 2) associates either know the policies and follow them or they don't.

IMHO, the policies are probably consistent. Getting the work done is inconsistent for many reasons, some of which have been mentioned elsewhere. It's not uncommon for there to be staff shortages, especially during a pandemic. They'll take associates from another department to help fulfill online grocery orders, for example. Certain jobs take priority.

That being said though, I find purchasing diapers on clearance to resell for profit to be unconciousable. I don't have children.. Please, leave the diapers or child goods for parents who need the break (like dad when I was younger) or consider donating them to a shelter/church/etc. I'll add women's hygienic products to this. • @stiaininbeglan3844
      @stiaininbeglan3844 Před 2 lety

That is a glitch between the price file and the till. The Price Checkers tell you the same price that the PDA type devices that the associates and management carry around say (I only ever encountered where it didn't twice in the whole 9 years I worked for Walmart Canada). The cashier calls a CSM or Department Manager, gets the correct price from their scanner, and overrides to the correct price, and if the price given by their scanner is different from what's on the shelf or sign, then Scanning Code of Practice kicks in. When I first started there, the customer had to ask for the Scanning Code of Practice, and then later we were told to go Above and Beyond and start applying SCP automatically.
If you are not receiving a satisfactory level of service, speak to the Store Manager, and if he's an idiot, ask the nice associates who is the best Assistant Store Manager (ASM or Assistant Manager), and whichever one is talked about most frequently in the best light, that is the manager you want to talk to about your concerns.

I never ran into any items when working for walmart that did thst to the till or i was told to not sell with the exception being street dated items that due to the contracts set in place i could not sell before the street date. Mind you i worked at walmart prior to flipping items or scalpers really blew up (not saything they didnt exist before hand of course)
I do however work at gamestop now and there are items in our system that have been zeroed out. So they are items that have a price tag of a penny however we arent allowed to sell those which sucks too caude they are decent items im sure they will be destroyed which seems like a waste. We also limit certain types of items being bought like how ps5s we can only sell one per customer a lot of collectible stuff has a limit of 1 or 2 per customer depending on the item, though this isnt in your case, you arent buying items that are collectible you are simply buying discounted items.
Like others said its not the cashiers fault, ive had instances where people eanted to buy an item i knew i couldnt sell snd then management came to me and were like”you know they complained you shouldve just sold it” walmart managers arent kind in this sort of situation and the cashier gets in trouble either way even tho they were just simply following policy

I would like to see manufacturers make money by selling the items at a higher price retail and the people who want them may have a better opportunity. With the crazy events in the past 2 years people were buying hand sanitizer and other items and the authorities put thier foot down and made people who were doing it where they would see jail time for taking advantage of others in need. They had $1,000s of dollars invested that they had to give to charity at Best. The firearms and ammunition world sees this stuff every election and national emergency maybe people will become more aware if they want to pay Low prices...but some fads fall apart later but its usually the collectors who paid top dollar then get soaked when the market falls apart...

I worked in sporting goods at Walmart and whenever I would scan something that was a good deal, like 1$ or 3$ items, straight from the distribution center I would typically buy it and tell everyone around me about it, lol. It seems it's just an error in home office when they price things. I'm guessing when an item gets restricted it's because there is an employee in the store that has reported it to management or (like someone else said) the item has had a recall. And hence the restriction on it until home office changes the price back, that usually happens within 3 or 4 days. Most of the employees look at things like that as a secret clearance, but I never worked in electronics- that was a whole different world I'm sure.

Only Recalled items scan as "Sell not allowed". Anything priced as $0.01 or occasionally $0.02 is on an RA and must be collected and taken to Claims to be returned to the supplier. Those items are not restricted at the till but they are jot intended to be sold. Any associate who tried to purchase 1¢ or 2¢ items can be disciplined. $0.03 is typically a store side clearance item for quick sale, but can also be Home Office side clearance for quick sale, and all Clearance must be avoided by staff for 24 hours from the time of the price change action.

I am not sure when if you got the latest update to the Walmart app but for me it no longer will show me the in store price and I am curious if something scans with a cheaper Walmart.com price will they price match it to what it scans for!

Curious on the Apps accuracy. Many times I get "Unavailable" or I've scanned and get a discount price but the item scans for a better price from an associates App. Wal-Mart the innovator of self check and pushed out their app to eliminate in-store scanning kiosk.

My question is if they can't sell it why do they have it on the shelf to begin with. That makes no sense to me.

How do you get the products to ring up as the price in the app? I tried this once but I checked out and the prices were not correct.

What app do you use to identify the sales and then cross check the pricing elsewhere?

If it is on the sale floor and that's what it rings up for I would definitely expect them to sell it to me.

They're supposed to. Even if they remove any remaining ones afterward and you're the only one who got them at that price, the ONLY way they can't sell it to you for that price is if the till reads "Sell not allowed" in which case there is a Recall and they legally cannot, or the till reads "Item not found" and upon investigation into a scannable barcode number (UPC number) they discover it is street dated for a date in the future, in which case they have a law suit on their hands if they sell it to you now. You could ask to be put on a waiting list if that is the case, but you would have to be able to prove that it was marked at that price when you come to collect, because you can bet it won't be marked at that price when the street date comes around.

Do you have a video explaining your process more? It seems that basically a lot of things are marked the wrong price so you just use the app to see the correct price?

How does this work every time I find a game on the app it says it's on sale but I check gamestopp and it's the exact same price

So did you just download the Walmart app. And it checks the price that it will definitely ring up at?

Fyi different store but similar boat, if the computer says no, theres nothing an associate can do, in some cases the computer will also say no to the manager. Especially recall items. Some things are recalled by the system for admin reasons. We had $50 safes the system registered as $5 overnight. Within 30 minutes the computer had been corrected and the prices were right. But for a week when the safes were attempted to be rung up it was just a blue screen that said can not sale item "recalled" and made a manager come get the item. It had been listed at the correct price in app and in store for over a week. It took like a month for it to figure out. You would've thought we have pulled them from the shelves but except for like 2 days when it was on a pallet in the back it was right back on the shelves.
