    You're exactly right about who this pedal is for. I fall into the amp-in-box camp. I use the '65 dream but I've always wanted more cab options. This pedal provides that in so many ways. Somehow they have captured the response feel of speaker cabs-like what it physically feels like from your fingers to your ears. If you're using headphones, the room mics seem to move to create actual, sonic space. Sometimes it sounds like the cab is right on front of you or to your left or right depending on how you adjust the mics. Not just panning-directional but virtual positioning. It's remarkable. The tone is the most authentic i've heard in 20 years of using some kind of amp emulator. The variety of tones is hilarious. There are 100 presets and its is INSANE how much they differ from preset to preset. If you refuse to use your phone and that's why you're not buying one of these-if you're willing to fall on your sword over that-You're stupid...It is a SMALL price to pay for the best direct tone you've ever heard in your damn life.

    I bought the OX Stomp a week ago, and I absolutely love it. It offers one of the most natural-sounding cab/mic emulations I've come across. With its knobs and switches for most of the important settings, it's incredibly user-friendly. I run my Mesa Studio Preamp into it, or I feed it from the line out of my attenuators/load boxes, which are connected to my amps, and it works like a charm.
    I've set it up with two DI boxes connected to its line outputs because I like having the flexibility to convert the line level to microphone level. This allows me to utilize my beloved external preamps or the UA Apollo Unison preamps to add extra flavor during recording. Since I no longer play live, MIDI isn't a big concern for me; the only thing I wish for is a more stable and user-friendly Bluetooth connection for using the configuration app.
    I've also used the Two Notes CAB M+ and will continue using it alongside the OX Stomp for sounds that the OX can't quite deliver (like a Pig Nose speaker, for example :-) ). However, for recording purposes, the OX Stomp covers about 90% of my needs. The one thing I prefer about the CAB M+ is how easy it is to configure and tweak with the Torpedo Remote software directly from my studio PC over a stable USB connection.

    The only downside with the Ox (both the big box and the stomp) is the Bluetooth connectivity that works on a good day and refuses on a bad day. Why not USB as everybody else? So be sure to dial in a few set and forget presets that you need and can go between for those days that Bluetooth just do not want to play ball and you can't tweak the unit.

    Maybe this has been out for weeks, but this is the first I'm hearing about it. I definitely agree that it would be nice to have XLR outs and a headphone out, and it would be great if UAfx came out with a slightly larger version that included those features for those who feel the need for them. I personally use a DSM & Humboldt Electronics Simplifier for those purposes, so I would be part of the target market. I have no real interest in the full OX box, but the OX stomp is definitely something that could work for my personal preferences, provided I added a Countryman Type 85S stereo Direct box to my rig to run it into the PA or recording interface. UAfx is definitely making some of the best sounding stompboxes on the market, but they are bit larger and a bit more expensive than I would like them to be for the features they provide. My current main guitar pedalboard is built around the Simplifer for the amp simulation and DI functions, a Boss GT-1000Core for my digital effects needs, and analogue drive pedals. Switching to an OX Stomp, Dream '65, Golden, Starlight, Astra, and Max, plus a Type 85S, to provide the same functions would take up a lot more space and cost a lot more money, and while you could argue that the UAfx products would provide somewhat better sound, the difference in quality in the end would be kind of marginal, compared to the large increase in size and cost.

      I am inclined to agree with you but on the other hand, I believe that there is a nonlinear interaction between pre- and poweramp that you will miss in this way and that will compromise the results. I tried capturing pre and poweramps in the wuad cortex separately but when you put them back together, it sounds nothing like the full amp. Poweramp emulations i have tested so far have been underwhelming at best. I believe that problem is probably best solved by an analogue solution. I had great results with a Kingsley hatchet.

    The duplication in these types of boxes in terms of effects for me is really not that useful. How many reverbs in each stomp box/amp/ir do we need? I would rather concentrate on the main thing the stomp is supposed to do. If it is a cab simulator, put all the product research and features into that instead of adding bits here and there as add-ons like reverbs and delays. Having a really decent smart device interface would be more important to me than another reverb effect. UA builds great stuff though and always has. I don’t think plugging straight into the OX Stomp will sound very good. It’s not an amp simulation after all, but a cab and mic sim. You can still keep the rig simple by using a preamp pedal between the guitar and the OX Stomp. Here are some awesome ones: Cornerstone Gladio SC, Xotic BB, UAFX Lion, Revv G2, Friedman pedals. @KrisBarocsi So after 9 months, has the OX Stomp replaced your IRs? I'm trying to figure out if an IR loader or something with dynamic modelling like the OX Stomp is the way to go nowadays. The demos of the OX Stomp make it sound more dynamic than a typical IR, but there's of course no telling what the most realistic sound is of a rig that's not yours...

      @@CorNigrum To be honest I was never a big fan of using IRs. Mostly because I never managed to make them sound right and feel really enjoyable. I kinda agree with a comment that says it's good but useless. I can't think of a reason to have all its flexibility live, just a couple of IRs are more then enough, and in studio or at home there is no real reason to use a separate device instead of software. And it's not _that_ simple and ready to go, it's in the middle between single-knob IR loaders and more complex cabsim solutions.
    Effects sound great but there is no good interface for them, having to open an app to adjust something is really annoying and far from "turn a couple of knobs and it's doen" experience. I'm all into more simple gear and always prefer amps and pedals to amp sims or multifx units. And if function is not accessible from device itself for me it's not there. Apps for devices most often are just poor solution to fix something that onboard interface lacks.
    Overall to me this thing looks like a toy for guitarists that want a toy to fiddle with, just more simple and sexy toy then some others.

    No headphone out and no XLR out are both a major miss. Seems like best use would be practicing or recording without an amp. Radial J48 1-channel Active 48v Direct Box
      Can someone do a video and explain WHY UA does not need to out a bunch of xtra junk like XLR out and headphones on their pedals? That is not what these pedals are for - and those of us who want this on our boards and are building boards do not want a bunch of this extra stuff on the UA pedals. We want the UA pedals for what they do - make exceptional dynamic tones that are in a league of their own above the many IR options. UA is for people who want realistic signature tones and dynamics without a bunch of real amps and mics, play direct in, and also have extraordinary responses which originally only came at high volume.
      For XLR out and headphones that is another product and maybe the best company is Radial.
      I hope UA does not listen to these comments about XLR and headphones out. I realize it would be great if one product was the mothership which gave us all our desires, but it is not realistic. We need tools that do one thing exceptionally well that nobody else has made, and for those tones, UA’s new toolbox is the only option in its class. If someone wants to noodle and have some good sounds and a headphone out, there are products for that. The UA stuff is for previously unattainable ultra-high end tone and response.
      Massive respect to all. This is my opinion - namely that I like UA the way that it is and do not want them to give in and turn their works of art into Frankensteins.

    I get it - it is not made for the people who want full on programmability. Fine!
    But is it really asking too much to be able to switch a couple of presets remotely? I will buy one for the studio because it seems to sound amazing (hope they do it as a plugin too) but for performing on stage it is too limited and I - like many others - don’t want to tap dance but concentrate on the music while still sending sophisticated tone to FOH. Since more and more people will either want to or are forced to go direct in modern times, the lack of remote switching is a majorly missed opportunity in my opinion.

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I know what you mean with live performances. We got used to being able to control and switch everything in a very efficient way. It’s evolution.
      Since the OX (like a real cabinet) is for me a set and forget kind of pedal, I really don’t mind not being able to switch it remotely. UA has other pedals though that I would want to remote control (amp sims, modulation, etc) so yeah. I understand what you mean. 👍

    • @franknguitars7671
      @franknguitars7671 Před 10 měsíci

      I think that „set and forget“ works well when performing with a band that plays originals or perhaps a tribute band. But when you do covers and go from Kopfler to Floyd to Clapton to Blackmore and Metallica there are too many compromises with set snd forget. It is certainly true that one should not have too many cab sims in a live performance to keep some level of consistency FOH but a few different ones between sparkly clean, jazzy and full on rock are beneficial (IMHO). The six presets in that box would be plenty enough if they were remote switchable.
      Anyways - thanks for the nice reply Kris! Just ordered the OxStomp from Thomann 😂 for my Studio. The sounds *are* compelling.

    Been using it in a few different ways;
    with amps through my Fryette Power Station , both line out and FX send, then running into DAW.
    With my Ruby and Iridium into DAW or Line 6 Powercab
    I’ve been really surprised by how good it is, once you spend a little bit of time and get your presets on the dial you’re good to go.
    Using the switch options on the pedal gives quick access to 4 speaker models.
    The app though is really poor, yes you can access all the functions etc but it’s very poorly designed with lots of having to go back a few screens that could be avoided.

    Ok your MIDI reaction is just straight up nonsense. If you don't use MIDI, nothing changes in how the pedal functions now. If you do use MIDI, you would have great remote control. But that's just not an option on the OX Stomp.
    How can you complain about complex menu driven systems when the OX Stomp is one? Instead of some dinky screen on a device it's a screen on your phone, and it's more complicated to connect via BT to a pedal than it is to just use something from a built-in screen.
    You can't do a whole lot on the OX Stomp itself, basically adjust levels and pick a rig and that's it. Sure, it probably works well when you have all configured in each rig to your liking...but so do those menu-driven systems!
    Your IR comparison was also not good. What was the Friedman IR? Was it even a similar cab? Also if the settings you had match what's on screen, you would have room mics on the UA so it's going to sound more 3-dimensional than just a close mic IR.
