I feel much the same way so far. I'm currently on the last 60 pages. Can you imagine how great this book would have been if there were an extended glossary and 5 or 6 illustrations of some of the creatures and the world itself?

      100% agree!

I HAD THE EXACT SAME THOUGHTS!!! Like give me something!! Like rough sketches at least!
And worse, there is like no fanart ANYWHERE either

I loved the fact that we can read the way Joron's mindset changes through the book, and how Lucky Meas's influence on him kind of helps him grow in a 'tough love' kind of way!

For a nautical fantasy set on ships I wholeheartedly recommend Robert Redick's Voyage of the Chathrand series. A huge ship, conspiracies, magic, great characters, mad kings, mystery, little people, a talking rat... It has everything. The audiobooks are read by Michael Page, so you know they're incredible.

Personally, I love that in R.J.'s nautical world, since Galleons and sail boats don't exist, neither would words like "sail", "mast, "starboard", or even like "First Mate." I love that when you jump into this book, you start off as a tourist who slowly begins to integrate into the society that's built between its pages.

So happy to hear that your first readalong has gone off to a great start, at least for you! I am planning on finishing Barker's debut series early next month and then hopefully catch up with Boneships immediately afterwards!
So far, I've really enjoyed everything I've read by Barker, including the ARC of his upcoming book. Once you get adjusted to his unconventional storytelling/writing techniques, it's just one heck of a wild ride. I love his wild imagination!!
    Happy reading!

I read it and loved it! Cant wait to read the next one. It is a bit challenging at first, he drops you with no explanation of anything and you have to glean your info throughout the story, which i enjoyed. The characters are really good and interesting, especially Meas, you never know what she is going to do next and the creatures are really good.

I just watched your video as I hadn't had a chance to pick up the book until we were already halfway through the month, and I wanted to finish it first. I loved it! I'll be continuing with the read along. I appreciated the glossary as well! And I loved the writing style. So good!!!

I've read this series 3 or 4 times. It's almost hypnotic, isn't it? The world building is strong and unique as you mention, but it's the characters who take center stage for me. Joron, Lucky Meas and the Guillame will always have a place in my heart.

The characters are really fleshed put, they feel like real people. The terms are a lot to take in but once you do you really enjoy them. The other thing is that most people are of course not used to real life nautical terms, so they will have an even harder time understanding them

I also agree about the wording. I’ve had to look up the meanings and definitions of some of the wording in this book. It’s different from what I read but am really enjoying it so far

Really nice review. I would like to read this book when it comes put in Czech 😢 I’ve read some books in English, but this seems like really hard read so… I hope it will come out someday, or I will improve my English enough to catch at least most of the story 😅 I like reading in English, but I noticed I miss some details which make the world richer snd put together

I would describe the writing style as a lot more literary than most contemporary fantasy. I don't mean this in a negative or pretentious way, I think Barker is quite good! But readers coming from more familiar settings with faster prose might be in for a surprise as far as how it flows for them. I would recommend it to anyone not put off by a more uniquely conceived and poetically written fantasy series.

This one really confused me. I'm going to try it again because I read it before I was as well versed in fantasy as I am now, but I just couldn't follow it in 2021.

First time that I dnf'd an audiobook that I would definitely try in print. Hate to be negative, but the narration was not good.

  • @bradleymier2167

I didn’t care for it personally - I found it to be dense, needlessly complicated with the terms, and a bit flat on the characters. I also found the initial premise in the first chapter or two to be completely unrealistic. Took me out of the story from the beginning. I did like his debut novel though, and will probably try his new release. Hopefully I’ll like that one better!

If you want a fantastic underrated nautical fantasy read My Fathers Land by AC Wilson. It’s a new release that is like Indiana Jones meets LOTR with a splashing of Tress in there.
