I am old but if I ever will die, this is exactly the song they have to play at my funeral. Sounds macabre? No. The song is exactly my life. I love the music of Nina Simone. And I love the country she lived in, France.
And funny enough, the original version was actually french, "comme d'habitude" sang by a french singer Claude François who had his heart broken by France Gall, she was also a singer.
I played this at my dad's funeral and I think it was soo uplifting and affirming of who he was and who I am.. it's great! :)
I’m having thie Sinatra version played as my obituary is read, but I’m also using Simone’s “It’s A New Day.” I love the stately pace of the Sinatra arrangement. Bless you!

This is with still going strong Leopoldo F. Fleming on percussion.
Actually, Fleming was the one who came up with the idea of the double-time bongo arrangement, he is playing here on 'My Way', which can also watched on the live video takes on CZcams of Simone singing the song at a Red Cross / Croix-Rouge charity show on French TV. There is another video from a later date where Simone is even trying to play that rhythm on the piano herself without a percussionist.
By the way, and which so many (even musicians!) are mistaken about, 'My Way' is NOT composed by Paul Anka, but is a French song "Comme d'habitude" composed by Jacques Revaux with lyrics by Gilles Thibaut and Claude François. Paul Anka wrote the English lyrics.

I found on Wikipedia that was Harold Wheeler the musician behind this record but I didn't know anything about "the bongos player".
