  • In 2006, I had the pleasure of recording a series of interviews with Indianapolis magic legend Harry Riser. I thought that many magicians would be interested in Harry's incredible stories of his life in magic and his friendships with Dai Vernon, Charlie Miller, Ed Marlo, Slydini, Alex Elmsley, and many others. So, I've posted them here for all to enjoy.
In this video, Harry discusses the story of how Frank Garcia came to "invent' Wild Card and bring it to market with Lou Tannen. Peter Kane is also credited as the trick's creator. After you watch Harry tell his side of the story, visit the following link for more info on the history of the classic Wild Card effect: www.lybrary.com/mlp/item.php?i...

Peter Kane's original, Watch the Ace, was published in Hugard's Magic Monthly in April, 1962. Garcia slightly improved the handling but the major credit unequivocally belongs to Kane, whose original included the basic structure with the Hamman Count and the dealing into two piles. I'd be surprised if Riser really didn't know that.

Would have been nice to credit my father, Peter Kane, with the creation of this trick. The magazine referenced was Hugards Magic Monthly I believe. I have a copy somewhere. Same thing with the Gypsy Curse, companies are still ripping that trick off and selling it, such as Hampton Ridge. Unscrupulous.
