Sri Lanka is being torn apart by civil war as Hindu Tamils and Buddhist Senhalese clash once more. This report was filmed inside Tamil held territory and across the front line on the very day the war restarted.

We travel from Anaranapuram to the town of Vavuniya, and across the front lines to the rebel held, Jaffna, where ordinary Tamils face a daily struggle. Tamil radio blares out news of the war on the streets of Jaffna. A 70 year old man flees his home, loading all his possessions onto a truck. Heavily laden civilians walk across a lagoon at night. It's watched by snipers, but is the only route open between north and south. At the Tamil headquarters women fighter 'Tigresses' train for war. "We will lay down our lives for Tamil Eelam," says one. Their willingness for martyrdom has earned the Tamil Tigers a fearsome reputation. A Tamil leader explains that inhuman treatment of Tamils caused the renewed fighting. We interview the father of one of the suicide Tamil 'Tigresses' whose attack on two Sri Lankan navy ships sparked off the fighting. She was just 22 but her tearful father speaks proudly of her sacrifice. The Tamils are determined to exert their rights and are well prepared to use force.

Everyone thinks that ONLY the LTTE fought the Government. In reality, the LTTE fought various paramilitaries including the Government. These paramilitaries would often engage in fights against the Govt and the LTTE. It is very well known that Karuna Amman, the Commander of the LTTE Eastern Province, broke away from the LTTE, sided with the Sri Lankan Govt in return for political power and money. Hence why he is currently a MP in Parliament in Colombo.
Furthermore, it is very well known in the Tamil community that the majority of massacres that have been blamed on the LTTE were instead committed by the Sri Lankan Govt and the paramilitaries, so that they could win favour of the Government over the LTTE.

By birth I am a Sinhalese born and raised in SL till I was 14 yo and migrated in 2007 due to war, associated atrocities of the government, economic turmoil and lack of opportunity. I can’t imagine the struggle my Tamil brothers and sisters went through to become recognised as Sri Lankans in their own fkn country and those of you who continue to still struggle! I am ashamed of all the violence and bloodshed on innocent people on both sides. Words can’t explain the trauma the generations of people had to stuffer because of this, I don’t know if there’s music hope left in these people who had to live through it. It’s one of the greatest tragedies of South Asia, that’s not recognised as such.

my father fought in this war almost died like 4 times. the closest he's ever been to death is when his company's(sorry I don't know English word for it) first deployment. he was 5 mins late which the group leader left without him and he had check in late. he told me that he sat there for 20 min to report. shortly after he gets the news that his squad jeep was blown up with everyone dead inside. turns out the ltte was waiting for a armored column of fresh new tanks and armored vehicles to pass a bridge on which they were a day late and my father squad got caught up in.
