Looking at these highlights it becomes clear that alot of players in the NHL can score goals like this but few can play with this level of consistency. Matthews greatness is one being built on a rocksteady foundation game in and game out rather than glimpses of brillance. If he keeps this up we will one day look back on his career as one rivaled by very few players indeed.
Agree, very few players of his caliber can say they never got past the 1st round of the playoff.
If he really wants to impress people maybe he should try and win a playoff series.

Nope. Guy doesn't show up in the playoffs. Scored 2 goals every game for the last 30 games and then only has a single 2 goal game in a 7 game playoff series. It's a recurring theme now. He had 1 goal in 7 games against Montreal last year. 2 in 5 against Columbus. Matthews is only good at scoring goals in the regular season.

Yea very non sense… mainly because of their contracts.. mcfavid has way more team control.. but even if they had the same contract Edmonton would never do that..
Yeah... There is no way in hell the Oilers would do that... One player shows up in the playoffs and puts up 2 points per game while leading the playoffs in points and carrying his team to the third round... While the other is " Mr. Regular season" scoring at nearly a 2 goal per game clip for the last 30 games and then has a single 2 goal game in a 7 game series and still hasn't scored in a game 7 lol.

McDavid has 33 points IN THESE PLAYOFFS ALONE and has more career goals than Matthews in the playoffs in less games... McDavid has scored in a game 7 and has also scored a series winning goal in OT . McDavid has made progress. Matthews hasn't.

first goal in this video is the greatest skill goal have ever seen. he drives, stick handles between defenders and then subtlety and intentionally stick checks the chasing defender at full speed with the puck in motion and then scores. i think i caught it in real time but slow it down to see it. certain athletes are on another plane. go leafs. remember, there is more magic going on than the political capitalist media companies let on or even know in all aspects of life. truth is beauty. greatest goal of all time.

@@MrPapasvhilly I mean, he had 40 in his rookie year playing with Hyman and Brown, and was around a 45 goal pace the next two seasons playing with Hyman/Nylander and Marleau/Kapanen. He was always a great scorer, but he hit another level this season

No doubt he's got incredible talent but one must admit most of what he has done for goal scoring has been seen from many elite players in the past. His achivments stand out simply because we play now in a league that allows minimal contact. Check out these goals,, defensemen are stick checking him? Years ago Scott Stevens and a whole host of others would have knocked him into oblivion! The league has created these goal scoring machines because fans wanted it and this is the new NHL....aggressive body crushing open ice hits have been eliminated to create players like Matthews.
Yes, just pretend that skinny teenage Wayne Gretzky wasn't able to light up the NHL in the 80s with that hard style of play. The real reason you see less hitting is because it's too risky with how skillful the players in the league are now. If you misjudge the decision to make a hit, you will get walked around and scored on.
Stamkos scored 60 goals ten years ago and didn't win the hart. Malkin led the league in points that year with 109 and won the Hart and Ted Lindsay. Matthews gets 60 goals and wins the Hart while there are players with 110, 115, 123 points lol. What a joke.

Matthews was nothing special offensively or defensively when the playoffs came while McDavid dominated at both ends before getting obliterated by the deepest and best team in the league.
Auston Matthews is one of those players that doesn't pass the eye test. These inflated numbers he's getting right now will slow down. Every single Leafs games I've watched this year he's practically invisible. If he's not getting his tap ins then he's just skating around the ice clueless. Matthews is good...But not even close to the quality players like Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, Nate McKinnon, Steve Stamkos...If you cannot get your team past the first round of the play offs foe several years...then Matthews can score 70 goals and still be a playoff dude !!! Conner McDavid should have won the Hart Trophy...not loser Matthews...that was a BS decision!!
