  • In this episode of #FCTimeMachine, Sucharita takes us back in time to 1995, to the Ram Gopal Varma's fantastical movie about movies, 'Rangeela' starring Urmila Matondkar, Aamir Khan & Jackie Shroff. She discusses the love for Bombay, the love for films, and more. We dedicated this episode in loving memory of Master ji Saroj Khan.

Oh man 'Rangeela' was not just a film it's nostalgia for my parents, they always say how excited they were because it was Rahman's music, RGV's god damn film. Dad had a huge crush on Urmila and Mum on Aamir and still continues to... They always keep telling the dialogues and say that is a Cult Classic. We as a family love that film and that had passed on for generations! Loved your take on it Sucharita ❤

A.R Rahman at that time was in the form of his life, everything he touched turned into pure gold like Midas, a huge portion of the credit of Rangeela's quality goes to Rahman's songs which at that time was so so fresh compared to the typical bollywood products.

My family used to change the channel whenever a song from Rangeela was playing, due to the bold attires of Urmila. This made me utterly curious as a kid. Finally when I was able to watch Urmila in those mesmerising songs, I was flabbergasted by the way Urmila carried herself without a glimpse of vulgarity. She will forever me my childhood love ❤️.

there are soo many things i could talk about Rangeela. will just mention a couple things.. Rangeela was the FIRST audio cassette i bought in my life and listened for a month without changing. Tanha Tanha and Tip Tip barsa paani i feel are the sexiest song picturised yet and these two song made my pre teen years very very colorful. i had dreams ( you know what kind ) of Raveena and Urmila for many months. music holds even today film probably not so much. wish it had more real ending. even then i couldnt fathom a movie star Urmila would fall for a nobdy Aamir.

FC there are lots of underappreciated gems from the 90s - Enough have been said about classics like Dch, Rdb,tzp instead you should pick lesser discussed films such as sarfarosh, pati patni aur Woh, hazaroon khayaishen aise , love sex aur dhokha, Mr and Mss Iyer, English August, Bombay boys, Is Raat ke subah Nahi, Sardari begum, Naseem , zubeida , A train to Pakistan, Zakhm, 1947 earth, chameli, mein Madhuri Dixit banna chahti hoon, darna mana hai, Iqbal, door, socha na tha etc

With each passing year it becomes painfully obvious how swayed Sucharita is by stories that revolve around women. The way I see it, Rangeela wasn't even a women-centric film. It was quite simply a refreshing take on the story of an underdog with wide starry eyes and charming naivety. In that sense it was similar to Khamoshi (SLB's first film) and Annie's story arc but with a more fantastical treatment.
While this was still an entertaining review, to gloss over the pitch perfect performance of Aamir Khan or the subdued yet stately presence of Jackie Shroff does the film a huge disservice. In fact, this was quite possibly the first time in the 90s where an A-list Hindi film hero like Aamir Khan underwent a complete image makeover to bring an element of authenticity to his character - something that wasn't very common in those times.

One of my fav films ever. I wish you had talked about the performances a bit more. I think this is one of Aamir Khan's best performances ever. The scene where he sells the tickets at the theatre and the hotel scenes where he asks for the fan to be turned don, are Hindi movie cult classics, IMO.

Oh! how can I forget those opening beats of the film.
It was Eros Cinema at Church Gate, where I saw it. To my surprise, as it was my first movie in Bombay, before the movie started, there was a huge gust of fog followed by a full throttle opening beats of the title song in newly introduced Dolby Sound!
I was a cinema disciple then, and getting this treatment for a cine goer was just out of the world.
It was the commercial cinema at it's best. The class in the mass appeal of Rangeela was unmatched.
Ram Gopal Verma and Rehman arrived in Bollywood with a Bang through it.

Don’t think Sucharita likes Aamir Khan! This movie belonged as much to him if not more to Urmila and I am surprised how she did not mention any special things about Aamir! No one could ever imagine Aamir doing the Tapori role! He not only nailed the look, he completely owned the character! I remember watching it in theatre and every time he entered the scene, people were clapping and whistling! He was worthy of all the awards that year because he broke the mold and raised his own bar higher!

I mean such a beautiful movie it was. Urmela was just perfect for this movie how good she is as an actress again Bollywood wasted the talent like her by giving mediocre movie to her (mostly). Shifali Shah's character was actually inspired by Sridevi in real life and tbh it was too funny.

Sucharita you are amazing. Hope Saroj ji is resting in peace, making heaven her dance floor. Thank you, Master ji. You were wonderful ❣️

I still do not understand why did Aamir khan not win the best actor award. Yes DDLJ is a really good film, but this was a complex role and this was a tapori act for the ages.
He did not even get a nomination for best actor for Rangeela(got that for Akele Hum Akele Tum)

I often wonder why RGV never made it to the top shelf of directors. He has a different take on cinema making.

Just being picky and because after noticing it couldn't unsee it. The face makeup is a shade darker than her neck. Maybe it is the lighting and home ambiance wala jugad. But it is not the case in her previous time machine videos. On a different note, Rangeela as desi La la Land is very good reference.

I was too soon to comment but wow, just wow. This review is so much more than what I expected. I want to see Sucharita review more films and call out classism, casual sexism, the glorification of a problematic thing that we just grew up being okay with. Looking forward to more such reviews.
