Gott erhalte unser Kaiser! I know that one. Joseph Haydn also in his 'Kaiser-Quartett'. What a find. Didn't know he wrote a Symphony. thanks for the upload!

A Truly wonderful symphony. I was not aware that Bedrich Smetana wrote symphonies. Like many people who enjoy classical music, i am familiar with Ma Vlast and the Bartered Bride. Please, more gems like this.

Unfortunately, Smetana only composed one symphony before fully immersing himself in the symphonic poem My Country, because during the era of national revival this forgotten masterpiece was deemed too pro-German given its usage of the national anthem of Austria-(Hungary). :)

Lovely piece of music. It's disappointing that it ends just before the 46 minute mark, leaving the finale incomplete.

From Wikipedia....Dissatisfied with his first large-scale orchestral work, the D major Overture of 1848,[120] Smetana studied passages from Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Weber and Berlioz before producing his Triumphal Symphony of 1853.[121] Though this is dismissed by Rosa Newmarch as "an epithalamium for a Habsburg Prince",[122] Smetana's biographer Brian Large identifies much in the piece that characterises the composer's more mature works.[123] Despite the symphony's rejection by the Court and the lukewarm reception on its premiere, Smetana did not abandon the work. It was well received in Gothenburg in 1860,[124] and a revised version was performed in Prague in 1882, without the "triumphal" tag, under Adolf Čech.[121] The piece is now sometimes called the Festive Symphony.

A fine symphony, with an unexpected Teutonic finale. But am I alone in losing the last minute of the recording?

Bruce McCrae I can understand your comment Bruce, but at the time this symphony was written the Germany as we know it wasn't "born" yet. Smetana wrote this composition to commemorate the wedding between Emperor Franz Joseph and Elisabeth of Bavaria, the well known Sissi. Bohemia, the homeland of Smetana, formed part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, and as such Smetana used the Imperial Hymn as basic material for his symphony. And that was "Gott behalte Gott beschütze unsern Kaiser unsern Land" on an original composition by Joseph Haydn. Only in 1922 Germany adapted the hymn as Deutschland über alles.

+Arnold Goverde I'm somewhat shocked of what I read from you because I always thought that Smetana was in the opposition of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.

In fact he was Mohamed, but to be succesfull as a composer he was more or less obliged to assume the situation. And one should nof forget that in the beginning of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph a lot of people were hoping he was the bringer of a more liberal rule. Smetana tried to establish himself in Sweden to get rid of the Habsburg domination, but in the end the love for his home country was to profound for him.

+Arnold Goverde +Mohamed Hamza ... I am not sure how much he was actually against emperor. He is a generation before the relationships between Czechs and Germans in the empire really deteriorated to the useless level. He was certainly very strong Czech patriot, but I am really not sure whether in his time it necessarily implied not being patriot for the empire as well.

The Austrian National Hymn and Smetana's country was part of the Austrian Empire, so he used it to "curry favor" with the Emperor no doubt
