  • KTBC FOX 7 produced a short film about what would happen if a nuclear missile strike were to hit the area. A great look at some iconic locations.

    I miss the old Austin

Interesting how it was made so the bomb was dropped in a very woody area miles away from the city with no one there, so the only real threat to Austin would be the radioactive fallout. I do love the happy ending for the Klukis family though.

We were told here to hide under your desk at school. Nothing protects better than a wooden desk.

You must have read Ralph Nader's "Unsafe at Any Speed". It's a good book.
The "Twilight Zone" mood of this film really works. AISD made us watch this when I was in the second grade, and the only time we used the emergency drill described in the movie was when Hurricane Carla swept through the city. Hurricanes were much more dangerous than the Soviets.

@@gbarthg Just one correction - Carla had been downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it hit Austin. It was no longer a hurricane.

It was produced by KTBC channel 7, but there was no FOX back then.

Undoubtedly the voice of narrator is Cactus Pryor who announced UT basketball games during 70's and 80's. He also good friends of LBJ.

Why did they have to film it like a twilight zone episode? This is horrible I love this city 😢

Pretty sure the voice announcing the "All Clear" at the end was the voice of LBJ. Anyone else notice that?

I thought that as well. 1960 should have been a busy year for LBJ though. I guess everybody needs a break once in a while. 🤣

The Voice narrating this video sounds like, Cactus Pryor. Forgive me for misspelling his name, if I did that?

interestingly enough, suppose something like that happened without warning and you did happen to be out in the open at that time, if there were no buildings or sheltered structures anywhere, is the only way to escape the radiation to dig a deep hole in the ground and then cover yourself?

The film is a joke. Even in that era a explosion 25 miles away wipes Austin right off the map. I maybe wrong, but the fact it exploded on a plateau should amplify the overall affect.

      No, not at all.
The average Russian ICBM at the time was 300kt.
Even if we assume a big yield Russian missile, like the ones they tried to install in Cuba those are only 2.5megatons
If it hit, 25 miles away, like the video said there would be minimal damage to Austin proper
The smaller missile would make one hell of a fireworks display, but the blast radius would go no where near the center of Austin.
Casualties would be minimal to anyone inside, and the biggest killer would be at first radioactive fallout to those not under cover, and later, you would only see the same sort of casualties you see after any mass disruption of infrastructure, like from an earthquake or big storm.
It would suck for everyone involved, but would not be an automatic death sentence, unless you were caught outside and got a lethal fallout dose, or later if you were especially medically fragile, and needed O2 or insulin etc.

these bombs are not as powerful as stated. the vital circle is only 5km. the question is, there is no target 35 west of austin.

They said Edwards Plateau which is more than 3 hours away from Austin.
