- “With the first pick in the 1997 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs select…”
Big 3 Week kicks off today with the genesis of Spurs legend Tim Duncan! Take a look back at the Big Fundamental’s origins in the newest episode of The Ring of the Rowel: San Antonio Spurs Docuseries. - Sport
Tim Duncan deserves his own statue outside the AT&T center.
I agree
The Spurs don’t do statues. I kinda like that mentality. All of that being said I liked your comment and I would take photos in front of it just like those championship trophies .

Agree. On court success (and failures) don't define the Spurs, and do not take accolades into their heads.
It is not about an individual, it is about the team and everybody's contributions in achieving a goal.
Let Michael, Shaq, and DWade have their statues.
TD is ok being the greatest Spur of all-time and that's it, life goes on.
He's selfless and team-oriented.
I know this sounds weird because he’s probably one of the least traditionally “cool” superstars but growing up Tim Duncan made me feel cool to be from San Antonio. It gave me a weird sense of pride to know he was on our team. I always remember that feeling and I think he gave it to everyone in the city. Thanks Tim. You’re my hero 😭
Tim is cool as fuck. He's cooler than any other superstar because he doesn't even try to be cool. He's just himself.
Yep! I agree!
@@NANA-ht7gl been a Spurs fan since 1990 and when I finally moved there in 2011, it felt so good. The Spurs environment was the real deal. Loved it so much!!!!
As I watched this I was thankful that my family started watching the NBA at a time that Tim Duncan was playing for the Spurs. We never watched the NBA but wanted our kids to watch the pros to see how they moved the ball. The Spurs, and specifically Tim Duncan, became our family favorite. I love that you had that time in San Antonio!
He truly is an amazing human being. He made his teammates better and the city was grateful for it. The ultimate team player.
I remember thinking how lucky we were to have David, but it seemed like the clock was running against us to get over that hump to a championship. When David went down that previous year, I thought man, another year we're gonna be out of the mix. But when that season proved more disastrous than I thought (21-61?), I thought our window was over. I kinda understood the draft process a little, I knew we were in line to get a top pick so that was cool. I was in Dallas visiting some family and we were all watching TV and someone switched it over to the draft lottery. I had heard over and over, Tim Duncan was the consensus #1 pick likely going to Boston who had the best odds. Spurs were almost a sure lock for a top 5 pick. And when they got to 4 and it went to Memphis, I got a chill. First time ever I felt this emotion over Basketball much less a draft. So, I was thinking there's us (The Spurs) and Boston with 3 cards left. Then 3 was revealed and it was Boston, it was the first time I almost jumped out of my seat.
I didn't know as much then as now, but I knew Tim Duncan was wanted by everybody. I was a little pessimistic thinking there's no way San Antonio is getting #1 pick, even though we were on the cusp. We were fortunate to have David.
Then the 2nd card was Philly and I lost my mind! Jumped up running around my relatives living room high fiving people. I'm not sure they understood what just happened. My brother-in-law did. He lived in Dallas but was from here and knew what was on the line. We hugged and high five because we knew San Antonio was now on the map, and great things could possibly be coming.
Tim fit our city and team culture which Pop was still trying to strengthen. As the years passed, to have 2 #1 picks that were humble good people, sacrificed salaries if it meant getting better players, quiet leaders who led by example and allowed Pop to coach them was just amazing. Not taking away from all the great players we've had, who sacrificed in different ways, who paved the way. Manu, a starter on any other team, willing to come off the bench, Tony a French champion showing his maturity at 19 by getting dressed down by Pop on the sidelines with the crowd looking on. Avery, our vocal leader with an insane ability to get the team moving in the same direction.
I was so thrilled to put it mildly when we got our 1st championship. We showed the world that good guys doing it right could finish on top. And the 7th largest city with little respect from others could put together a winning culture. We aren't just fair-weather fans, we love this team, and we were finally putting everyone on notice!
Wow he faced TEAM USA before he was drafted
Forever Young & Old Man Riverwalk!
I had to come back to this after we just got the first pick in the 2023 draft. Let’s go!
Tim Duncan, The Big Fundamental, is one of the very best basketball players in history.A true legend. Respect forever.
Greetings from Spurs fan from Poland.
Man I hope the Spurs get the 2023 first pick continue the Spurs Legacy. Let's hope
Boy do I got some news 4 ya⬛⬜
Tim Duncan made me a spurs fan. I'm from Brazil.
GOAT
Timmy D!!! Greatest power forward ever.
Without question a top 5 player all time.
No player in league history has won more than 1 title without a current All-NBA teammate.
Duncan did it 4 times
HKeem Olajuwon won in '94 without any All-NBA teammate. Both he and Tim are similar though..
Parker was an All-Star at some point though
@@benoitlamirault6456 All-NBA is far superior to All-Star
But yes, 99 Robinson was would have been an All-Star if there was a game, 05 Manu was, 07 Parker was (no All-Star for 03), but no teammate made All-NBA NBA first 4 titles (or period between 01-07)
The Atlantic ranked TD number 9 as the all-time greatest, and the highest among PFs.
No complaints. I think TD doesn't mind, if not he doesn't care.
Another facet of TDs greatness is he let late picks Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and "traitor" (mid-pick) emerge into All-Stars and he is genuinely supportive and happy for them.
Timmy 21 Forever!
Spurs GOAT
RIP Stuart Scott
Tim Duncan is my hero being humble with personality and GOAT forever in my deep heart ❤️ ❤❤when i saw the Spur winning champion 1999. It was the year for me arriving to live in America 🇺🇸!
Thank you Tim Duncan so much!!!
The 🐐
Best Spur all time!
Chills.
Tim Duncan had next level hand eye coordination.
My MAN, Timmy!
🏁👑
thats it!?!?!? i need more 🥺😭
Great video documenting the greatest Power Forward of all time. Also, nice touch using the Kevin Harlan commentary from TD's rookie playoff series with Phoenix. Watching that game confirmed for me - yeah, he's the real deal!
Tim Duncan the GOAT… for him to play for my team growing up 😊😊😊How lucky was I ??? Go SPURS Go
Miss him on the court.
Goat
I remember vividly Spurs winning draft lotto and being so excited as SF Bay Area Warriors fan only because I was a huge David Robinson's fan.
When it comes to college hoops, I had/still have 0 interest but it just so happens that I saw Duncan played for Wake Forest one time on TV, and started watching him whenever I get a chance.
Spurs were good then and David wasn't injured yet at the time. So, my half-pipe dream or wish was that Duncan would be drafted by Spurs and played along next to my idol, the Admiral.
When Spurs won the draft lotto, boy o boy, I was happy as hell. First time I got to see Duncan played was I believe Halloween game against Timberwolves, Garnett.
Robinson missed the last play but his put back was good last seconds and won the game. Duncan showed some emotions but that was about the most he would display all in his career.
These little docos are so frickin awesome! Super impressive ⭐️🔥
Much appreciated
A SAS fan from the Philippines. Love it.
The best power forward in the NBA 😊
@Spurs any chance You have the full 1997 nba lottery video?
timmy
I ubered a guy in San antonio that was a business owner from Chicago who said he loved Tim Duncan so much that he was front row anytime time the spurs were in Chicago. Also said he modeled his business practice after the spurs!
Tim Duncan top 5 all time hands down. 5-1 in the finals and would have been 6-0 like MJ if Pop had him in the game when Ray hit the game tying 3 in game 6. TD snatches that rebound from Bosh easily.
Still can't understand why Pop kept Tim on the bench for that play. That Championship just slipped from the Spurs hands.....
I wonder when they're going to make one about manu
5 chips later!!!😎
Kevin Harlan doing the commentary
Can we get those spurs reports back with pop.
🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀
Now bring back Rc !!
Love the series but being a native San Antonian - I don't appreciate Don Harris on here - I can see if this was a Shaq documentary. Chuck from kabb or Simmons from Ksat shld be representing tv stations only
They were all there to witness Tim there’s 3 other stations not just two stations
"I was dead set I was going to Boston."
Boston fans on suicide watch🤣
