  • Following the full build video of my version of the shoulder mounted gimbal rig, inspired by the setup used to shoot the movie The Creator, here's an update! Now the core of the gimbal is detachable and can be powered via a dummy V-lock plate and direct D-tap into the battery.
Here are most of the key parts I used in this video (some are alternative versions because the ones I have aren't produced anymore):
    DJI RS3 Pro: geni.us/dPHOA
    Smallrig RS Power Base: geni.us/Tv4u
    Smallrig 15mm rods: geni.us/UEHt
    V-lock power plate: geni.us/UskX3WK
    Andycine V-lock battery: geni.us/KWAZ
    Zitay D-tap splitter: geni.us/gvBH
    Smallrig 15mm railblock: geni.us/T5PuQH
Smallrig Dual Rosette 15mm (unavailable) Alternative: geni.us/SlfwPu
    Smallrig Rosette NATO handlebar: geni.us/Bhwvb0
    iFootage Spidercrabs: geni.us/TPQfYaA
    Smallrig NATO handle: geni.us/AeOQ
    Niceyrig Shoulder pad: geni.us/OJdixw0
    Andycine C7 monitor: geni.us/AOgaXQ
    Hollyland transmitter: geni.us/k5Hmp5D
Dual NPF to D-tap adaptor: geni.us/GO54H

UPDATE: As is often the way with these things, a new better version of doing this came to mind right after posting, so I'll be working on a new full build video with the modifications in mind, so stay tuned!

What about a version with the new RS4 Pro? Hard to keep up these days haha. This is amazing though

You've literally created a brand new product. I just picked up a OG Red Komodo. I'm going to try to recreate the build.

Sweet! Definitely recommend getting a monitor you can flip the feed horizontally on, it helps massively for shooting backwards while you're facing forwards!

HI, Why wouldn't you just remove the RS3 head with the attached camera and plug the original battery handle back in?? That would be quicker, simpler and would give you a single handled Gimbol.
Even if you wanted a second under-slung handle you could have a spare and attach it to the RS3 head like normal.
I'm baffled why this is a better way to detach the camera/gimbol.

Because it's not a quick solution I'd have to get tools out to remove the NATO rails that hold the security clamp of the power plate in place. Sure I could remove that from the equation but then you're relying entirely on that one lock to hold your camera. I don't like doing that

But you raise an interesting point. If I can find an M5 thumbscrew I could replace the screws that are holding that security bar in place, so it can still be a toolless process, I can use the original battery grip, and then stick the top handle back where it was in the previous version.

Barry you've gone and made me go and buy a few more accessories! I'm going to attach the original battery grip to the whole rig, and replace the allen M4 screw with a thumbscrew so the security plate can be removed easily and toollessly. I'll make a follow up video soon 🤟

I know that they are not rated to be used this way but do you think that a nato to arri monitor mount is safe to use as your second point of contact from the dji to a rod clamp that is clamped on carbon rods ? The other point of contact is the magic arm directly from the shoulder rig itself.
