  • Twin fin surfing and twin fin surfboards are at the height of their popularity since the 70s... one could argue. The extra speed, ease of release and advanced outlines now available have made surfing more effortless without the need to sacrifice performance, and we've seen the rise of brands on the back of twin fin shapes as a result.
As part of our Greatest Board Test productions, this year we're focusing exclusively on twin fins and in this four part docu-series tracing the very first wave to the ultimate winner, we'll also learn a tonne about the twin fin matrix from special guests such as Josh Kerr, Marcio Zouvi, James Chilli & more.

I absolutely love twin fins! Being a fairly large dude ( 6’4”, 235lbs ) I found putting a nub ( 2” ) fin in the tail as a third fin makes a huge difference! Still get the twinny experience without the slipperyness.

Thanks for the video's Kale. I had my first twin made for me in 2003 - 5'7". Made it from a Donald Takayama template, we put some concave under the front foot, it was amazing how it felt like the board would just push forward. Sourced the original 5"x7" Steve Lis fins--glassed those in. Many years later I got rid of my 7'6" semi-gun and my thruster and exclusively surfed this board in the point breaks of Santa Cruz. Went with the tailpad...when I pushed really hard on the bottom turn, the tailpad saves the longevity of the board.

I've got a fish with the tail plug in the middle right behind the fins, and what I started doing was using the leash saver as my faux kick pad to let me know where my foot needs to be. Definitely can't jam my back foot into it like a kickpad, but still kind of works as a reference point when I want to crank out a turn.
Excited to see the rest of the series, keep them coming! Yeeeeeew!

Back in 2000 I shaped a 5’ 9” twinny with glass on keel fins, retro shape but modern rails, I loved it so much I’ve always had a twin fin ever since. Current favourite is a 6’ 1” Form ADPT shaped by local surfer Alan Stokes, good in all surf… but I’ve been looking at the Merrick 6’ 4” Twin Pin’s for lumpy stuff, as I’m getting to be an old man now.

i used to not use a pad on my fishes but i press so hard on the ball of my foot at times i actually cant surf for a few days after a while. i just take a razor blade and trim away everything so its flat, but there are companies who are making decent fish pads as well. once i started using a pad i haven't had as many issues with my back foot, issue is still there but no where near as bad. pads long term help keep your back foot from getting that extra bone growth from the constant stress of focusing all that energy into a small area of your foot. look at noel salas foot, he's had surgery i think maybe twice now.

Stoked on the review from Kale! Just bought a PU HK Twin with FCS modern Keels at 5'9 32.7L (I'm 82kg and 6'1). I wouldn't have bought it new otherwise. Had two short burns on it in 2-5ft waves: it's already a revelation, but I'm still dialing in how to sink rail because it kind of floats going fast. The back foot sweet spot is pretty far back (just forward of the leash plug), so I put a traction pad with a kicker lined up over it. 5 star board for sure; I doubt I'll ride anything else unless it's super hollow or tiny.

Great series but it must be difficult to compare models in fairly average surf. @northwestpassage7471 Před rokem +1

@@RuRuRarRar worked surprisingly well. My ghost is a 5'11" and I kept it as a 2+1. It had a ton of drive for take off speed and control but a perfect degree of release thru turns and snaps. And that was in a dumpy 3 to 4ft beach break. The set up works like magic in my pyzel happy twin in everything from mush beachie stuff to my local point break when it's 6ft +. I even ended up buying a second set of the fins just to have for other boards and friends to try. By far one of if not the best set of fins I've had since the release of the original K 2.1 from the late 90s early 00s. I spend 15yrs work in the surf industry and have tried everything I could get my hands on and this is definitely a winner.

"...siding with our Australian partners" So by process of elimination and assuming it's an American company, either Pyzel or ...Lost Mayhem were too jaded by the last board test you did and didn't send boards 😂

    Prices! Prices! Prices!
    1 STCY: Bullet Twin 5' 7" = $795.00
    2. ChilliSurfboards: Peppa Twin 5'7" = $725.00
    3. HaydenShapes: HK Twin 5'5" = $795.00
I think these are their current prices? I won't purchase a board in this price range but if you have the cash; go for it! Hopefully, Kale will review some affordable foam or foam hybrids in another video. 😊👍

$795 is cheap at the current prices boards are going for. Most surfboards are now $1000
