- So the Predator tank has been a staple in my Blood Angels army for almost 30 years at this point, and I'm having had a decent amount of success running them in 10th edition. So this week we'll compare it to some other cheap sources of fire-support for Blood Angels, and see what the numbers and maths tells us about this being a competitive choice.

I’m going to be getting a Heresy Predator to run for my 40k Blood Angels. If it ends up going to legends I’ll just run it in 30k 😅
I run a Destructor in my Dark Angel army. It always does a job for me. Also, i find opponents don't shoot it as they don't think its dangerous, whilst it does major damage to their army.
Mine were invaluable this weekend!
I do like to run my lancers over the predators for a few reasons that are not solely math related, though they still appear to me to be the undisputed kings of anti-armor.
- They are self-reliant: You can bolt 2-3 onto any list and they take care of themselves, no need to spend cp on re-rolls or oath their target. Now I'm spending cp on my infantry units that need it more. Not a lot of ways to generate CP for blood angels so every free re-roll helps.
- Range: 72" range on the primary gun means that whenever a vehicle leaves the enemies deployment zone and goes to mid-field I'll be able to hit them before they hit me. I'm also able to fire back at hammerhead railguns without moving myself for that sweet +1 to hit.
- Relatively Cheap: 160 for such a dangerous and consistent anti-tank platform is a steal. Played into a orks dread mob list recently and my lancers stopped the big walkers turn 1 and cleaned up the rest of the board by turn 3. Considering the deff dread is 130 points and the bigger walkers are ~300 my lancers made back well over double their points.
When I'm building my lists the goal of any of my ancillary units is to support my jump infantry that form the backbone of my lists. I need to be able to pop transports reliably so my infantry can charge their infantry and I need to be able to deal with T10-12 units without relying melee since many of those threats will sit in the back field and it'll take a while to get there. The rest they can handle themselves a suicide death company marine squad can clear a mid-board into a fights first unit, I can charge my own transports into a unit to soak up overwatch, red rampage will help clear out terminators/tyrant guard, and the BA have so many attacks that I don't consider taking other anti-infantry weapons. They just complement jump infantry so well and that icarus rocket pod has helped me a surprising amount against drukhari and orks. You are very correct in that taking a single lancer isn't enough, you'd need at least 2. You could consider taking 3 but then you run the risk of too much anti-tank but the redundancy is valuable.
Been running a destructor after seeing what it can do in one of your batreps. :) love that I can bring my old but fairly well painted Predator out to play again!

I have 4 preds, mixed load-outs with change options, been playing them ever since I started. The Destructor has been my preferred for a while, though I still have a soft spot for the full Las load-out.
I only have space in my heart for one Predator and its Baal. I do run Land Raider in support thought with the four God Hammer Lascannons. Ballistus Dreads are also very underwhelming.
I'm all for running BA tanks. my worry is buying them, then the codex drops and they go to legends due to being first born. Perhaps we have a BA gladiator variant on the horizon?
You know. . .I don't think I've seen you use Angel's Sacrifice in a game. Wouldn't be a bad way to "Oath" an additional target if you find yourself with the CP to spare to mop up something that downs a character. . . Wouldn't make for a bad buff for something like a Predator, although I believe it affects the whole detachment regardless.
I can`t agree that pred destr is a best anti infantry while we have baal gladiator and it is better
1) it has more shots, second it has sust2 against infantry and it is a bucket of shots
2) It has twin-linked and dev wounds, 2+ will not save you from this profile
But I can meet you in the middle
1) It is more versatile model, you can equip it full anti infantry or give it av flavor
2) it is cheaper and if you over limit for 20-40 pts you can take something similar to Baal Gladiator.
Im so happy Predators are actually good now. Boycott gladiators, real tanks have treads 😁

I appreciate the breakdown, but feel like there’s a bias towards a specific outcome. If you want anti Death Shroud then grab a Gladiator Reaper, Sus2 vs infantry and rerolling dev wounds on 12 shots.
The Lancer is a ranged anti tank beast. It’s not great vs 4+ invuln, but that’s not why I’d take it. Most armies have plenty of vehicles and monsters with high toughness, loads of wounds and a 3+ save, no invuln. A lancer will melt these and out shoot anything else in our arsenal. It’s not the damage output, but the consistency of it with the re rolls. A hammerhead or TFex can hit harder, but on average the Lancer wins.
For everything else, we’ve got DC, SG and the DC Dread 🩸
The predator is cool, but not worth the points drops against the lancer for anti tank, diff sorry for anti elites, but usually don’t struggle for that with BA 😎
No bad choices either way, just about the core reason to bring the units and spend the points. Or just play what looks cool and have a blast!
Have long considered taking the 3 Preds in my Wolvies to serve as a nice firebase before the puppies bring home the pain. But haven't played much 9/10th ed so not sure if that will work. Nice to see they ARE viable. If but for a moment before the legends hammer hits them in the Baals....

I am hesitant to use them because of the base 3+ save. I know its easy to get cover and armor of contempt, but I would prefer saving my CP for other things if possible. I personally try stacking as much 2+ base saves in my army list as i possibly can.

@@ba_commander yeah I'm more worried of the opponents armor/anti tank. Then again I only play my brother and his guard armies
One of the reasons 3 Destructors work so well in Death Guard is that the heavy bolter sponsons not only have sustained but lethal hits. DG can make a Predators's guns effectively AP -4 (1 base, 2 shoot at infantry, 3 contagion range with the AP army rule and 4 use the Ferric stratagem). 6 shots at 24" with at S9, AP-3, D3 and 6 more HB shots at S5, AP-3, D2 with sustained 1 and lethal hits does very bad things.

Here's my 2 pence: not worth it. Adding Lethal Hits to short range 0AP 1 damage weapons? Having move-shoot-move on a unit that isn't really meant to move around?
If you think you'll use the abilities he adds to the squad then go for it
Did mean lieutenant with combi-weapon? Because the leader lieutenant is... I guess he's not trash for eliminators, but he's be too overcosted to be useful.
Did you mean Librarian? Librarian basically gives then Lone Operative. Which can be useful, but is a bit expensive for a home objective babysitter if your opponent doesn't have a lot of Indirect. But having them hold an isolated flank objective can be a good use of the Librarian.
Lt is better on incursors, the d3 move can reposition the squad behind cover or out of los.

Im concerned with buying older sculpts for my son's blood angels. Are you not concerned with the old dreadnaughts, predators, death company, sanguinary guard, etc going to legends?
I am also not buying old sculpts. I wish GW would just be clear about what is going to legends or not and a timeline for that.
With codex drops it should go in legends yes. All our old stuff are too strong

The predators are in chaos space marines which just came out. So besides the Baal predator which I won’t guess on, the predators will be safe for this edition until 2026 at least.
