This AMAZING family that saved my life paid to send their daughter there…their father was the president of BB&T so obviously he had the money and the contacts to get her in…she didn’t last a semester before flunking out. I can’t stand how these things work just like I can’t stand affirmative action…if you can’t make it in by yourself you often won’t make it. Already just having my school’s name on an application made it more likely that you’d get in, we would have way more sports credits, extracurriculars, community service, and internships, but all of that aside I think the name bumped us up. I still found it kinda weird how I was told I would get into college, refused to apply to more than two, and that we have a 100% (literally) college acceptance rate. I could right novels about the crazy the corruption that only I know about that happened…they kept trying to get me to rewrite my essay and I wouldn’t…idk I’ll keep reflecting back on three of us that ended up getting into my college and wondering if it’s because of my private school. Crazy what money will do for ya. The application fee for that place is more for junior pre-k than UNC Chapel Hill.

Duke is $80,000 a year. Who is able to afford it if they aren't privileged?? Even with scholarships, you still have to pay housing and food - $30k. That's almost twice the tuition of NC State, just for housing.
This is just not true. I'm a low income student going to Duke, and my scholarship covers literally everything and then some. I get a tuition refund each semester because my scholarship covers more than the cost of tuition. App would have been more expensive for me to attend.

I worked in Durham for 4 years at a local restaurant. This description is on point. Entitled, spoiled, arrogant little jerks. All of the Duke stereotypes are true, even with way more young college students it’s nowhere near as bad around UNC or State. Tons of them have that “my dad will sue you” sort of energy. All the time they’d come in looking clearly underaged, wouldn’t have any ID, and then they’d throw a tantrum when the restaurant would refuse to serve them alcohol and leave a zero dollar tip for their server on a large tab.

As a North Carolinian born and raised, NC has many, many big universities from State to UNC to app state to ECU to Meredith to Elon to Duke. I can say with utmost confidence Duke is the most bland and dreary school out of all of them. Everyone is a med student or athlete there and it has virtually no life. Most people in my high school don’t even consider Duke to be an option (even though we are in Wake County!) purely because of the life and price there. It is SO much better to go to a place with soul like UNC or State or ECU or even the great community colleges here.
