  • There are some men we are likely to believe to be sexual harassing women. But Dustin Hoffman? Ran Gavrieli explains how children are brought up to see characteristics as typical male and typical female - and how we can do better. Ran Gavrieli is an educator, lecturer and founder of the ELSE method (Eye Level Sex Education). He writes and lectures about „emotionally and physically safe sex" at schools, universities, military bases, companies and academic forums worldwide. Ran sees himself as a feminist activist for social justice, gender equality and abolition of the sex industry. His TEDx talk „Why I stopped watching porn“, that connects the dots between trafficking in women, prostitution and pornography, reached more than 17 million viewers worldwide This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Absolutely. While I agree that we should not think of men as rich and powerful and women as pretty, caregivers; men and women are physically and emotionally different. l embrace those differences. We complement each other so well.

This is such an important message coming from a male perspective. Thank you for speaking on this. As a society, we each can use our role to help change the current climate of our culture: as a parent, as a friend, as a teacher, as an ally. It's in the best interest of all. Everybody wins.

Awesome speech! It reminds me of the episode of Full House where Nicky and Alex want to play with dolls and Jesse doesn't want them to, but by the end they end up being okay with it because everyone realizes that playing with dolls teaches them to be good and caring people/parents one day.

While I totally agree with the intention of the talk, I really don't like the direction he is aiming at: "how to educate boys" sounds like "re-educate" and partly he is telling us that. No, we should not tell boys that they are wrong. The mistake is, that the typical male atributes he lists are not generally atributed to humans. THAT we should change.

Yep, just "educate the boys" is not enough, because any education has its limits and assuming that education alone will change people's behaviour permanently is just a naive ivory-tower mindset which _will_ consistently fail against reality. Because sometimes, reality _isn't_ nice and fair, and "can't we just all get along?" rhetoric won't change that.
So actually both boys _and_ girls need to be educated 1) which kind of behaviour ist wrong and inacceptable, and 2) to not be a victim, but to fight back if necessary.
And fighting back also means: if you can't prevent something, see to it that someone who did wrong will have to answer for it so that people realise that they won't get away with it.
