On "My Car Story" we're at the Carlisle Events in Carlisle PA on 7-10-20.
We're looking at a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner in Yellow Paint. The car comes with the factory 426 CI Hemi engine.
The car's Owners are George Gudat & Pete Ianzano, however today, we have the Original Owner of the car sharing the story, John Kaufhold. George & Pete purchased the car this year. The car had not been running since 1974 because there was an accidental puncture in a gas tank. John this year decided to find how much it would cost to get the car running, and thought even though he did not want to sell it, thought it might be best to look for the next Care Taker. He put an advertisement for selling the car in Hemmings and the ad did not include a picture, however George ended up calling, purchasing the car, and got it running again. This is the 1st time John has seen his car run again since 1974.

My dad was a Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge mechanic, and he loved all their products. I’m 56 years old now and as small child I remember him bringing home a roadrunner, very similar to this one, for us to test drive. I was an only child and being his little girl, I would get to “help” him by bringing wrenches to him, washing parts, etc. I loved it and will always cherish those sweet memories.

Hi, Lou! Got the notice about this video and just had to check it out. I enjoyed listening to John, George and Pete tell their story and even with a few scars, it's great to see this ol' bird still has all its "Beep Beep" after all these years.
This also gives me the chance to tell you my own Road Runner story. My family had a 1969 Road Runner with the standard RR 383, four-on-the-floor and bench seats. My father bought it new in January 1969...without consulting with my mother first! When he invited her to the dealership to show it to her he asked, "So, what you you think?" Her reply was, "There's a CARTOON on the door!" Well, before too long he fessed up about having already bought it and she said, "I'm supposed to go to the grocery store in THIS?!" Now if you think THAT'S funny, we had a VW Beetle before this (and another Beetle before that), so you can just imagine how much of an adjustment THAT was for her! LOL! Thankfully for my dad, my mom grew to like it and managed to learn how to harness all those extra horses under the hood, and everyone around us thought we had the coolest car in the neighborhood. I was little boy of 3 1/2 when my dad bought it, and as you would expect I got a big kick out of that "Beep Beep" horn, and I can remember how fast it was on takeoff whenever my dad merged onto the highway. I always had to grab on to the back of that front seat good and tight! Man, we must have passed every coyote in sight!
Well, now my dad's been gone 15 years, and that Road Runner was one of the best memories I have of him. So thanks again, Lou, for yet another fascinating car story! Beep Beep!

Nice story and truthful as you will hear. No fluff street racing stories or drama. I like this Roadrunner. Bare bones for sure. But that is how it was in those days. I own a 1970 GTX and have been the owner since 1980. It is Deep-burnt Orange with a black vinyl top. Black reflective stripes down the side. Consol automatic with buckets. Deep burnt orange with bright orange trim. 440 6 barrel with a very warmed over engine. Magnum 500 with white letter tires. I did street race mine and when restoring it, I had to go back to a few expensive replacement parts. I have rebuilt the front end and brakes all around. New shocks and tires. Totally rebuilt engine and rebuilt the carbs. She starts right up and hits a pretty good lick with the purple shaft cam. Just waiting on the body work to be done. Just received the replacement air grabber parts I needed. Soon I will be terrorizing the streets again. Only I will be 64 years old and much wiser. Thanks for the video of a great American legend.

Great car story as usual Lou! There's a gentleman here in my hometown that bought a 69 Hemi RR 4-speed after he got home from Vietnam. My uncle who also served bought a SuperBee around the same time. While my uncle never took care of the Bee and eventually blew the engine and soon after sold it, the other gentleman kept the RR and drove it very little. In the early 90s I believe, it still only had about 40,000 miles on it. It was still in top condition other than the paint was very faded, but no rust or dents and he had the car repainted, (Gold) and it was brought back to pristine condition where it remains as such to this day. For years he took it to carshows and won several awards in addition to getting a spot in HotRod magazine if my memory serves me correctly.
He still has the car today 51 years later and its parked in his garage. He's in his 70s now and hasn't done any shows in years and rarely drives it, and it is still a beautiful masterpiece, and the only thing that's not original is the paint which still looks excellent by the way. It may be stuck here in a small town in ky, but rest assured it is without a doubt one of the best and one of the few like it left in the nation, and I can only imagine what its value would be today. I think he has 3 boys, so who knows who will and up with it ultimately.

Hearing your story with your 69 Roadrunner brings back memories of my 69 Camaro when I sold it it was the same way I have put money into it had it up to about 3/4 of the way fresh paint fresh Motor Carrier but it wasn't off the frame restoration so I have to sell it because I was retiring and I needed more of a truck for transportation than just that historical Camaro sitting in the parking lot covered up so I did sell it to someone that was Far Far Away where I know that I would probably never see it again

@@loucostabile Yeah thanks Lou. I grew up in Roselle. 27 years there. My very first car was a 1974 Plymouth ROADRUNNER with the 440. Silver with the big red stripe and ' crab claw ' hood scoop. Blue vinyl split-back bench seat. 3.23 limited-slip rear end. Saw a small ad in the Daily-Herald from what was at the time Fenzel Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge in Hampshire. Mom was at a ladies church retreat so dad and I went to see it. Well dad had a soft spot and since he had already refused to co-sign for a new Dodge Little Red Express, I guess he figured this was ok. It was an ex-undercover car from the Illinois State Police down in Sangamon county. Had about 50k on the odometer. Let me tell you that car was a beast ! It was the last year for that body and the 440. I think they only produced about 230 some ROADRUNNERs with that motor. Drove the heck out of it then sold it to a friend that had a '73 with the 340ci. And also a '65 Belvidere with the 426 wedge . Fun times 🐶🐶🐶

I don't regret it. it was still under the Chrysler umbrella. Thank you Lou, for showing me this one of the Beautiful Muscle cars of the Century. The stock is also the best, very original. If i were John, I will not change anything, perhaps some touch up, remain the same color, keep the same upholstery as it is, (only my opinion). A very Sturdy engine, Amazing. You definitely formed a bond with this baby and I know it must've been hell letting it go. I've got a '07 Mustang GT that has bonded to me in the same way, I bought her at 45,852 miles and she is now just shy of 237k miles ;) For me, just getting time to bang some gears and have that v8 background lets me clear my thoughts and just live for today. My Uncle gave my brother and I his '69 Roadrunner this past July when he found out his lung cancer had gone beyond treatment's ability and he was just counting days. He had planned to give the car to us in my opinion from the day he bought it and I just don't know how to react to that. I loved his Donzi and all but, to get something as close to his heart as the Roadrunner blew my mind. It'll definitely make die-hard MOPAR guys cringe because of the personal flair to it but that's what makes me love it more and more...it's HIM that brought this car to what it is (along with Grandpa) he knew my brother and I loved that guy more than life itself. I still can't believe it is actually ours now even seeing her in the garage all cozy and warm :( Would definitely trade the car for a ride with him driving the car any day over the ability to just take her out whenever I pleased :( I don't think many of the people who buy cars like what you just sold realize, is they aren't only buying a car...they are buying a living breathing machine. Thankfully I know what my Uncle intended for this car and I will see his final touches out...too many people overlook the final details in this.

Lou, a "survivor" is a car in good to excellent condition that's never been restored. It "survived" good condition by being well taken care of over the years. I'm just letting you know this because you asked him if he restored it after telling you it was a survivor. Great car! Just a side note though and perhaps my personal opinion more so than an hard core rule, but since this car is clearly now in need of a paint job, it no longer meets the "survivor" terminology but it's now "original condition/ never been restored" instead. Whereas a real "survivor" car doesn't need a restoration or even a paint job. This one hasn't really "survived" it's like new/ near new, condition anymore, even though it's still in decent shape. It may not need a full resto but she sure needs a lot of work to bring it back to like new condition again.
