    I love how you mention doing this on a calm day when it isn't raining or snowing. That makes alot of sense to reduce headaches.

    I never needed to use chains working the East coast for 46 years but heard all the stories from guy’s that ran the mountain routes to the coast in the winter. So you taught even this old dog something today

  • @ChainerGuy278

    You make it look easy. Warm temps,no snow, dry ground, new chains, it is. I've seen it so bad the chains are so frozen in the chain rack the lock won't even work. I had to get my bolt cutters to get the lock cut off. It can be so difficult sometimes.

  • @benjaminvillasenor9064
    @benjaminvillasenor9064 Před rokem +2

    You need at least 4 bungees on a triple rail in case the chain fails so they force the chain outward to the side of the street..
    That's the main purpose of the bungees

  • @SteelyPaw
    @SteelyPaw Před 6 lety +6

    That was a really nice tutorial.. That is exactly how i put my chains on, with the cams on the ground further most from my feet or mirror image as to how they go on. I have never used chains that are doubles like you had. I chained both drive axles out side only and one set on the trailer tandems (one axle). When I put my chains away in a wooden box I made cheap, I spray them with wd-4o. a few mist coats as I put each set of chains in the box. I keep a spare key for my chains wrapped with electrical tape & wire tied to a cable under the engine bonnet. I also would add a head band light in case it's dark, and keep a spare battery in the glove box.

    The quickest way to remove them is a good pair of bolt cutters. Then just tell your dispatcher somebody stole your chains and you need a new set. 😁😁
    Don’t forget to reinstall the mud flap.

  • @donziperk
    @donziperk Před 4 lety +3

    Great video. A couple things I noticed first if your mud flaps are using a cotter pin to retain them loose those and put a hair pin clip in, tools required to remove it.
    Second when you put your chains back on the rack or into the bag do it in an orderly fashion so when you go to use them again your not trying untangle your chains on are dark snowy night on the side of the road.

    get the center as tight as you can first then the inside then the outside roll 30 feet or so and tighten them again we used to run our chains so tight they would cut the tires at time. also carry chain cross link repair pliers and cross links it doesnt take any time at all to fix them but hours if your chains wrap around something and tear stuff up. you cant have them tight enough and use minimum of 3 bungees per chain leave your mudflaps off you break a crosslink it will just tear them off anyway. Doing this without the truck under the trailer in a parking lot isnt putting on iron but they gave you the general. Also dont run them even half a mile on dry roads.. they get hot and break. you get good enough at throwing iron you can do a set of drives and a drag chain in ten minutes. We threw Iron 20 30 times a day in eastern oregon running ladd,cabbage and over tolgate and rattle snake and asotin grade all the time. its your best friend even if its for 300 feet

    This is actually one of the better how to chain videos that I've seen on CZcams.
    Some of the comments here are brainless...
    It was specifically stated that the trailer was being dropped so viewers could more easily see how it was being done... which happens to be the same reason it was done in fair weather... as well as why it was being done on the rear axle... so viewers could more easily SEE HOW it was being done.
    And the mudflaps were also taken off for the same reason, in addition to using them to kneel on.
    They WILL BE put back on b4 you go, so no, you won't get ticketed for not having them.
    And what difference does it make what kind of chains they are? He's doing a how-to video. He's not preparing to climb the Matterhorn, for f@#k$ sake!
    So, according to the logic of some of those comments, somebody needs to do a how to chain video at the chain up pad on I-5, m.m. 13 in Oregon, crowded with other trucks, at the height of an incoming Pacific winter storm in the dark with blowing snow, not to mention the plows going by and burying you even more, and the camera set up on a tripod in the right lane of the interstate packed with four wheelers out test driving their new winter tires.
    Maybe then the lame comments would end.🙄

    Just my 2 bits....when you chain only back axle you drivetrain will work twice as hard lifting you off as all the power first goes throu your front axle even with you power divder on wise men chain up front driver to maximize tracktive force chews the snow up and provides traction for rear axle thus improving forward moment up slippery hills and yes i drive super b trailer in the snow and ice 140000 # loaded !

      @johnabuick Před 6 lety +1

      John Heigl...........amen. you'll make it up a mountain grade with one set on the front where you might not make it with one set on the back. What's with the stupid bungies, get a set of Triggs with cam locks on both sides, put them on as tight as you can and then tighten the cams. Fuck Bungies.

      Bungees are just in case you don't have complete faith in your chaining abilities.
      When you throw 'em, they fall off outward toward the road, as opposed to getting all wrapped up in your brakes and causing all kinds of havoc.
      You'll need new chains either way, just saving on repairs...
      Or, as it was said, learn how to snug them down so bungees aren't necessary & use the same chains until they wear out.

    I keep my Winter Leather Gloves that fits snug, snowboarding pants, waterproof green hi visibility jacket and rain boots inside my truck that way I don’t have to worry about getting my jeans, sweater and socks soaked up so I can do what I gotta do to get them chains on and be on my way quick so I actually don’t mind if I need to chain up because I’m prepared lol Trust me when it’s snowing and your in jeans and a sweater and tennis shoes it sucks that’s when I don’t want to chain up because it’s cold and my clothes gets all wet and it’s uncomfortable. So yeah I don’t mind throwing 4 drive tire chains and 2 trailer chains. It’s not that bad if you have snow gear on and you know how to chain up. Also no need to move the truck I use a fifth wheel pull to grab the backside of chain and hook it up and then the front then tighten the cams and put the bungees on then I’m on my way!

      Do not drive any more than you have to with your chains on. The chains will wear out faster than necessary, they will damage the road surface & there is more chance of them becoming loose and breaking or catch on some part of the truck.

    • @TheRoadhammer379
      @TheRoadhammer379 Před 7 lety

      not to mention the DOT will wear your ass out with fines and tickets. Also you cant drive fast in a "clear area" with chains. You must be a greenhorn.

    • @louisbecker5799
      @louisbecker5799 Před 4 lety

      If the road is at least wet, you can leave the chains on. The moisture lubricates in between the links and keeps them from overheating.
      A dry road surface is a different story. I would do my best to avoid it- not more than a mile if absolutely necessary.
      Even with sub freezing temperatures, chains will heat up on a dry road. This results in premature wear, seriously reduces chain life & also may damage your tires.
