  • Happy Sunday!
I have a show in July and wanted to share what I do to get started. I’ll be making 15 paintings, and I don’t know what they’ll be, but here’s how I learn. I start by looking at recent work in my studio and in my journal. I look for textures, colors, and areas I love; it’s like a hunt. I think about and look for places to start with that understanding and connection to self. I spend a week or so staying open to all possibilities and embracing the unknown so this new work can leap forward. I’m excited to share the progress with you as it evolves!
What do you do to start a new body of work? How do you get fired up? Tell me in the comments.
This week on the Art2Life Podcast, we discuss how to become your art, reducing the distance between yourself and your art, and moving from thoughts in your head to your body. Be sure to listen wherever you stream podcasts or watch the episode on our CZcams Channel this Wednesday.
I have some exciting news! The Art2Life Podcast is making a shift! We’ve had an amazing time bringing you 128 episodes so far but we have new things to come. After this week, we will take a short break and be back with a new podcast on May 8th! Until then, I’ll be here on this vlog and our social media channels, still sharing with you!
Have a great Sunday in the studio!
    Nicholas

Nick, you are always so generous with your honest and transparent process. I don't know if you even realize how helpful this is to the community. I'm so grateful.

Starting: I like being in the quiet of nature and also listening to inspiring music.
Then I make some intuition marks that lead to the next and the next.

I am also starting a new body of work to mesh with some older pieces for a September show. I've made one piece that I'm excited about and want to emulate, but not copy. I too want to remain open and not limit myself. I work in a corner of my basement where there's a small window. If I turn off the light, I only see shadows. So I painted for a few moments in the semi-dark for a different effect.

That painting with all the silver gray should be called Two Forks because I saw two forks with tines facing down. Maybe a food or utility instruments-themed show?

This is so great neck and so timely for me as it happens, I will be having a solo show in the summer. It’s only at a local bank but that’s big for me. I am also still having to make the work. Hearing how you’re thinking about this body of your work you have to do is so, so very helpful. i’m doing CVP my third time around. I will also share my progress in the portal. I’ll keep you all posted OK

The work gives you the clues of where to go.
    Stay open and broad. Yes!
Its a feeling. Inherent with abstract art, yes? The work takes you on the journey.
I just recently realized what colors light me up! This was really a huge shift for me.
Excited to see the new format for the podcast.
    Thanks Nick❤

Good morning Nick. I'm an art major and I'm just making my first Depáysement project. Because of grandparenting and going back to school this late in life I find that watching documentaries, movies and art pictures give me the inspiration I need to start.
I am having so much fun letting myself go with whatever that little voice in the back of my head tells me to do. Thanks for always sharing with us a part of you. Gigi M.

Until now my work has been piece by piece. Never a theme. Ideas come from everywhere. Some work has been requested, others have appeared in my mind's eye and some are from quick sketches I had previously done.

I'm a new artist/painter, but an older person. It is incredibly hard to start a new thing like painting at this age and try to achieve proficiency at it! Wow, I have a newfound respect for artists, because it is extremely difficult. Durig a "down time" in my life i decided to paint and I've been doing so for about 16 months. I can see improvement though, even allowing for the frustration level being pretty high! LOL I never took any art classes in high school and so I truly know nothing about it. I start by looking t my favorite artists, de Kooning, Cezanne, Van Gogh. in a way, this makes it worse though-to have a discerning "eye" and not be able to come close to artwork at their level is where the frustration comes in. Proceeding slowly but surely. Wishing you the best.

I have started a new body of work and I have some continual bodies of work that are in various stages of my/their process.
I like you, have a vague notion of what will emerge, and I don't even have a show scheduled, but I aim to manifest some opportunities there.
Anyway, I love to use non traditional as well as traditional surfaces for my paintings,, because I love the variety and potential of what can present itself this way.
I am testing the waters with the surface of my new paintings, and feel pretty ambitious especially since I don't have a Show or deadline.
Something is calling me to make this work, so I am listening and taking heed.
Along with this, are the challenge of the business side of my practice, which up til now, I have fallen short and that aspect is where I feel overwhelmed.
Overwhelm is better than hopeless, which is where I have been, so I am moving up the scale.
Thankfully I feel support from this channel in some way, so thank you.

I’m about to go to the Western Highlands and always sketch/ make studies there, so your advice ‘to leave things wide open’ is very timely. If I’m going to make stronger work I have to step outside familiar patterns and limits. Thank you!😊

I started following Jeannine Close in her studio, very helpful for me. Learn about importance of selecting your color palette, I used to run trough colors with inputs. Little bit about free composition and how to organize smaller space for bigger art work.

I'm a watercolorist. I start with photographs who's subject i feel connected to. So far that's been people. I'm learning to move from simply copying a photo to putting some of myself into the picture by using the photo more as a springboard for my own ideas.

I’m listening to you as I start something new. I’m referring to my sketchbook of doodles, which I’ve been doing for a long time. However although I’m still using posca and other pens, I see this as a trial on a slightly larger scale before I move back to using Acrylics. Haven’t touched Acrylics for about 4 years so I have no idea if it will work!?

Hi ,love your videos ! How do I start ,well usually it starts with watching artists and getting excited by the color combinations ,the general way I feel about their work ,or mostly I’m inspired by my love of nature and my many photographs . And by my memories of certain events ! For instance I went sailing and it was great ,the perspective from on a sailboat is very exciting ,and the boats are so interesting ,especially when racing or juxtaposed against sun rises ,sunsets ,etc ! Good luck
Preparing for the art exhibit ,great fun ,I look forward to videos of you preparing and painting . Thanks .

So excited about the new Art2Life podcast and your new body of work. Can't wait to see where it lands. You are positively impacting so many people and with that, you are changing the world. Thank you for being you!
I always get inspired by interior design, fashion, textiles, and architecture! These things light me up! However, when I listen to good music while I create, I tend to be my most genuine self. It's always fun to see what comes out when I have some good tunes playing. :)
