  • In this video, we are comparing Ancient Egypt vs. Mesopotamia in all sorts of different aspects. We will be looking at the similarities and differences between the geography of the two regions, the phenomena of the flooding Nile vs. the flooding Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and how the geography and cultures within the regions worked differently in expansion and conquest. We look at the single unified culture of the Ancient Egyptians, their art, architecture and religious beliefs in comparison to the ever-changing political and cultural climate of Mesopotamia, a region rife with conquests and new dominant empires. This video will also explore the social structure of the numerous Mesopotamian cultures vs. the strict social hierarchy of Ancient Egypt, and the similarities between the pantheon of gods, and the differences in their beliefs for the afterlife.

This is very interesting information, what made the Mesopotamia (Uruk) civilizations superior is that they were secular and much more materialized than the Egyptians. That led a tremendous expansion in art, literature, military and cultural innovations and our civilization nowadays is more or less a continuity of those civilizations
What made the Egyptian civilization more familiar to us and more impressive in taking us toward the past is the same reason that made it less productive and less contributory in its actual time which was their belief in after life, when they preserved everything, even their kings their belief what brought their civilization to us

Two important things to mention is that there are some documentations that show Egyptian civilization was founded by Sumerian and Akkadian people, another thing is that there is no evidence that Khufu had built the biggest pyramid

But they also descend from ancient Egyptians. My results simply means someone in my family lineage mixed with an Egyptian person possibly. Both ancient and modern Egyptians do not just come from the Levant, most of them also have ancestry from native North Africans if you look at the DNA.

I wouldn't say that Mesopotamia had "different cultures," in fact, the only unifying factor in Mesopotamia was their culture. I believe it would be more precise to say that Mesopotamia was separated by their staunchly independent city states. Keep in mind, these city states, especially early on in the Sumerian era, weren't made up of different people, but merely had different institutions ruling each city.
Of course, this is not to say that Mesopotamia remained made up of just one ethnic group or people, and I'm sure if you're watching this video you'd know what I'm talking about. Point is, culture was pretty much the same throughout Mesopotamia for much of it's history, but governments split.

I admire deeply the ancient Egyptian civilization. 💟💓🙏
I took a lot notes while listening to this wonderfully prepared video. I think why they're similar is because they have a similar geography with rivers playing important roles in both of the civilizations. The similarity between their architectural forms might point to a sort of information exchange and/or trade between the regions around 3000 BC (which is also attested in extant artefacts from the period). Polytheism is not a surprising similarity as many cultures at the time were polytheistic.
By the way, I think it is proper to say that ancient Egyptian women had more power as there had been many female pharaohs, possibly beginning with Neithhotep, Merneith, Sobekneferu... till Hatshepsut,...,Cleopatra VII and so on!
Overall, I believe even though they're similar because of geography, they're distinct cultures with different conceptions of religion, art, architecture and the role of women in society.

    • @Luke-eg1gn
      @Luke-eg1gn Před 3 lety +2

Maybe I expressed myself too forceful in making that point.
The Mesopotamians were a religious people but from the early beginning of Sumer the rich merchants practiced usury with grain and silver against their own people often forcing them into slavery and confiscating their property, and during the fall of the sumerian civilization and the rise of Akkad, selling their property to foreigners when the local debtor couldnt pay the interest.
Rich moneylender guilds formed inter-city alliances that were sometimes able to control kings and make war on other cities.
This got even worse under the semitic Akkadian and Babylonian empires to the point where sometimes even the temples made money with usury. This religious and moral degeneration led to an increase in prostitution, taverns, poverty, and foreign migrant workers that worked the big estates of the rich moneylenders. In Babylon every woman had to offer her 'services' to the temple once in her life until a patron offered her a coin at which point she was obliged to have intercourse with him to regain her freedom. This meant that some women had to spend years in service to the temple.
The mesopotamian moneylenders eventually got so rich that they were able to raise entire mercenary armies and make war on an international scale without the help of kings. The hyksos (hebrew) invasion of Egypt marked one such event and initiated the decline of Egyptian civilization. The Egyptians didnt practice usury which is why there was no rich merchant class directly below the king. The only form of money the Egyptians had was the scarab similar in use to the english tallystick.

Egyptian writing is older. It’s civilization is older. Compare the kings list and material culture left behind. There really is no comparison.

Actually, Mesopotamian writing and culture is older (by a little bit).

The earliest known Sumerian texts are dated to around 3400-3300 BCE, while the earliest known Egyptian hieroglyphs from the tomb U-J are dated to around 3200-3100 BCE. But, due to the error margins, it cannot be said conclusively which one is older. However, we are talking about the earliest KNOWN or DISCOVERED writing, who the hell knows when was the earliest actual writing in either of those cultures? On top of that, Egyptian and Sumerian writing are so different from each other, that they most likely developed independently from each other, and whichever was developed first was most likely due to sheer chance. I don't see why anybody should seriously care which one of them was actually developed first. They were both developed independently around the same time.

@@firstaidsack yeah, why do they try to fit Egyptian history into Sumerian history when the ancient Egyptians civilization was far more advanced. Up until around the 25th century bce the Sumerian king list was mythological. Gunter Dreyer says he has definitively dated Egyptian writing and that the dates for Sumerian writing are inconclusive and the Kish tablet is undeciphered, as far as we know that’s some mess Charles Woolly or Jules Oppert drew in the mud. Maybe they want to give priority to Mesopotamia because Abrahamic mythology places his origins there. Or maybe they don’t want to give Africa credit for the achievement? Why would someone invent piltdown man? And why would the inventors of the hoax be knighted?
