Two things I learned form reading the comments section:
1. You did an excellent job, used all the correct materials and techniques, will last for many years, won't leak even during an earthquake
2. You did everything wrong, it will last about a week and by then you will have changed phone number and business name

Is he supposed to put nitrogen purge on liquid line when doing suction? Or both the same. Cause he will burnt that hose gasket every time.

Then there's real life. He's done this job a million times and can do it in his sleep.He's been working straight for the last 100 days 12-14 hours a day. The homeowner has been waiting for him for two weeks without AC, he's tired, It's hotter than a pizza oven, he's got 3 more customers on the phone that need him "right away" and his wife wants him to stop by the store on his way home to grab a half gallon of milk.
He's almost out of gas and he's into the odorant which is why his flame is orange so he's busting his butt to get the job done ASAP before he runs out of gas.
The joints hold pressure and vacuum. He's good to go and the customer is happy.
There you go. Real life.

Whether to sand (or abrade) or not depends on several things. It's always a good idea though on either brazing or soldering ... if you have time and the tubes aren't known to be contaminant free. And he used a flux rod made for brazing copper to copper; It contains and uses phosphorus as the flux agent. Soldering & brazing aren't kissing cousins; They're brother and sister. Only one is younger (requires a slightly lower temp .... soldering). Deburring would've been good; At minimum, it would keep particulates out of the system. However, compared to the size of the system, that's negligible. Still, better safe than sorry. Hope the tubes are clean. Or else he'll get pinhole leaks (at minimum). Now, or a few years from now.
He protects the services valve
He purges the joint
He changes the tip
He heats the tube not filter metal
The distance of the flame was good
But the best thing of this job, was the speed of how this job was done, this guy did not spend too much time and it was a clean job
These were the characteristics of a professional job
I like the space between the unit and the house. In my area they are tight to the house and sometimes in a corner so you can't service half of the coil and good luck if a capacitor goes.

You didn't address the black soot and the blue overheating of the copper. That black soot is now into the metal as well as all that O2 (oxidation). That copper is now annealed. Ask any welder what they would use on a soft copper braze.
He never cleaned the joint. The odds of proper capillary action are far less due to that.
@@jimdavidson5208 That soot happens on the pipe due to oxygen. It's fine as long as you purge nitrogen through the pipe. This job wasn't overheated.

BRAVO! i have been in the trades 20 plus years an this is the real deal clean an perfect braze. nothing wrong with leaning on the joints but not at all necessary.

I love Bosch units, so easy and simple to wire and so quiet.
Bosch is just a reseller. That pay extra to slap their logo on it.
I'm still worried about longevity on Bosch inverters. Working on their Re-branded Carrier WSHPs leaves sensor dependability wanting.
100% agree with most of the comments. I bend, braze and cut copper all day making Evap coils. It takes time but reaming your cut ends and using an abrasive cloth to clean them makes a world of difference. Also always use nitro for keeping oxidation down! I've put out hundreds of evap coils and havent had a single leak or restriction problem! Knock on wood lol. I am confident in my process if you are too lazy to use a hand reamer you can always buy a Wood Countersink or even a Unibit ive found to work really well to debur with a drill.

Good hands.good mechanic. We used spring type tubing benders. We called it silver soldering. Of course he de-burred the tubing. I cleaned my solder joints with steel wool while hot. Of course this was in trade school in the early 60s. Before I later became a Master Electrician.
Here come all the hvac experts on here that probably can’t even hammer in a nail if their life depended on it. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for posting, I've used the wet rag technique but never thought of running nitrogen as an extra cooling agent in the input as some of the comments say. Thanks for posting I know it takes work and I appreciate the effort
The nitrogen is to prevent oxidation and the formation of scale inside the pipe. R-410 A and POE will scrub it off the pipe and clog the metering device. Cooling effect is minimal. It's the water keeping the pipe a 212 Degrees that prevents damage to the valve. The torch flame is about 2200 and the brazing rod melts at about 850.

You should always run nitrogen through the lines when you are brazing. It is a little extra time, but like Henry Chinery says it is to prevent oxidation and the soot build up form flaking off and flowing through the metering device.
Why are you not flowing Nitrogen. That's just a trade standard. Lacking that here.

Voids your warranty if you don’t call Daikin on a warranty and they will look for oxidation in the pipe work, assuming the compressor is shagged.

Good Work! I did this in college and I succeed at this kind of course. Plus, I plan to join an apprenticeship program and learn more about pipe welding and brazing.

I partially agree with the setting of the flame. Part of brazing is getting the copper hot enough. The downside is a normal Neutral Flame is not large enough to cover the entire pipe (guessing 5/8”) i typically have the flame with oxygen set so the cone is at the brightest white which also elongates the flame. Then again, i’m not a field mechanic so what do i know. Other piece of advice is when in doubt about sensitive parts of the system, wrap it with a wet cloth. If necessary swap out rags between joint brazes

I’m on an install team with an Hvac master and his buddy is an excellent tech and they both are teaching me. I’m pretty much a gopher atm but I’d like to be certified some day. Doing my homework watching closely in the mean time 💯💯
Go commercial industrial only way to fly
This was good for me to watch a pro do a "good enough" install and I mean that honestly. Every field has the by the book way and the realistic way and as a DIYer it's hard to know where to put your energy. I am installing a bunch of mini splits and do all my own HVAC work so I'm no pro but I gotta be better than the average DIYer. I bought all the right tools, scale, micron gauge and so on as I think you need the right tool for the right job. The one thing I'll say though is this actually makes me feel a little better about flare fittings, I'm annoyed splits have them but I feel more confident that if done right they're equally good.
Mini splits have different filters for the refrigerant lines, they are not designed to brazed in. Flare fittings are used in all types of industries even sometimes at extremely high pressures. A proper install includes a pressure test. Its not a guessing game, whether brazed or flared, you have proof that your lines are solid before you ever introduce refrigerant into the system.
@@qomco I pressure test but only have the ability to test to 150psi because my gasses and regulators are all for welding.
You can buy a cheap set of ac gauges from Harbor freight or ebay. Idk how often you do this kind of stuff. 150 is honestly enough for most systems. If you have a bad braze or loose flare connection, you will see it leaking once you hit 20 to 30. By 150 you can pinpoint minor leaks with bubbles. I install mini splits and I only test em over 150 if the boss is watching.
The young generation is not learning these skills or any trades for that matter. My two sons will be taught for sure. I'm third generation hvac service.

@@redakounbi7144 Purges oxygen from the inside of the tubing and prevents formation of copper oxide when heated. POE will dissolved the copper oxide and carry it through the system, potentially causing damage like clogging the TXV if equipped. Griff says "very few do" because R-22 systems used mineral oil as the lubricant which doesn't aggressively scrub the copper oxide like newer systems with POE so failures weren't as common.
Gosh man, that is some of the cleanest brazing joints I’ve ever seen especially with a oxy/acty rig. Most of the guys I’ve seen get it too hot. Love the camera angle better too rather than first person you get a better feel of what’s going on. Keep up the good work Stephen!
Just a tip on the torch setup. Leave a small feather above the cone. This ensures you don't have an oxidizing flame that causes pinholes. My torch tends to light rich and drift lean with use due to the regulator. Keeping a feather assures me it didn't go to excess oxygen. It also helps to flux the copper in the oxygen free feather. Surprised you didn't reinstall the insulation on the suction line and compress it away from the joint for brazing. Saves having to split and glue afterward.
OA is overkill in my opinion. I just use acetylene. Most people will burn the complete shit out of something using oa

There's always best practices that make trade work dummy proof; but as an experienced brazer he did an effective job, if not the process they teach in school.
That wet rag is pretty cool, so the close end doesn’t get affected.
It's crucial when brazing due to the temperature required and high heat transfer of copper

When brazing or soldering apply the heat to the BOTTOM of the fittings and to the heaviest pc. first …. Heat flows up … If you apply heat at the top it will overheat and the bottom may not have enough heat.

You may have noticed he also heated the bottom and applied more solder after, but yes starting there can be more efficient
25 years of brazing and first time hearing this. Gonna try today. So funny when you hear something new that should be common sense.
Maybe there’s something to this that I’m missing but while hot air does indeed flow upwards (because hot air is lighter), heat transfer through a solid is the same in all directions.
Copper is EXTREMELY good at conducting heat so it really shouldn’t matter where you heat it.
The only way I could see this making a difference is when you have a very large fitting and the flame is too small to wrap around the pipe. In that situation, if the flame is at the bottom, the hot air can rise and flow around to the top. I wouldn’t expect it to matter for anything with a diameter under 50mm though.
What’s everyone else think?
In and ideal world, but there are situations where that not possible. Does it matter? Not really, it work either way. Silfos is extremely forgiving. Pure silver, not so much.

I'm currently 3 years young in the HVAC industry (mostly residential), and for the past few months been doing brazing with 15% silver & copper brazing sticks. I've been taught to feed in the stick while brazing. In other words, while the joints are hot, feed in at an angle where it "sucks in" the braze stick to fill in the gaps as much as possible. You did a good job, I think, so I dunno why everyone is trippin...
There’s text book and then there’s real life. You notice the video didn’t say How To, just Brazing 🤷♂️
There that way and there is your way. If it can handle a pressure test, it will live the the life of the equipment.

Good job Stephen.....how in the world did this video get 600+ dislikes. I swear people watch videos to so they can find something wrong. Im an HVAC contractor here in Houston,TX and I've seen units installed wrong, I've seen plenty of hack jobs and some of the units defy what we were taught in the text books. How many blown compressors have you found from not reaming the copper lines? I use to work at a chemical plant here in town and the old timers never brazed with nitrogen and I mean never. In the 10 years I ran service out there I didn't see one TXV fail from being clogged up. I've seen power caps loose their charge causing the valve not to open. The reason I know is because those units are still running today. Im not saying don't ream or braze without nitrogen but when you've been in the game for a very long time you kinda know what you can get away with at times. Some of these comments are like these people live in a bubble or in perfect world. Once comment read "no capillary action".....I mean come on for goodness sake. Back in the day we were taught never charge with liquid because you can damage the compressor. Now supposedly you can't charge a blend unless you do it as liquid. I know if you do it slow it will boil off do to the heat of compression. So the text book people didn't know this back in the day. FOH! Bottomline you can't always take the "text book" to the bank.

600 techs watched the video, who don’t want for homeowners to know brazing is easier than cooking cookies. Since lifespan of a/c system is 20+ years at most, reaming isn’t necessary.
You couldn't find some wrong with that installation? Is that the way you install AC in Houston? I'm sorry for those you worked for. This man just ignored the critical precautions that an installer should take to do a good job.

They didn't teach you in school that it's good practice to proof read your sentences, paragraphs etc before you submit. You just ignored common grammatical precautions in your composition. Since you know so much, I have a question for you. On a multiple circuit evaporator using a txv, what would happen if you don't connect the equalizer line? Don't use google or youtube. I got another one for you. When replacing an oem 3 wire condenser fan motor with an aftermarket 4 wire condenser fan motor using a dual capacitor which motor leads would you use? I know you've installed a shit load of condenser fan motors so this should be easy.

Who needs Brazing, Solder or Zoomlock or Flares? Stephen , when you put an AC in Phil Swift's home you could just use Flex Tape and Flex Seal and be in a cool TV advert too! :)

JB Weld with a smathering of Flex Seal over the top should do the trick.
