I felt like there was something missing, a certain emptiness when I was done. I really loved building that boat. Fortunately that void has been filled by sailing it : )
Great trip, great story. Love the sailing footage and commentary. Looking forward to seeing your 2018 video. I never knew about the 'Texas 200' sounds interesting. It looks like the whole route is inside the barrier islands and protected from the Gulf. I sail a Venture Newport 23 and this looks like something that it may be able to handle. Thanks for introducing me to this event, I am going to look into the 2022 event.
I'm building a pocketship myself so I watch and read everything I possibly can about them. This was great and showed me what I've got to look forward too. Many thanks
Building the Pocketship and sailing the Pocketship are both very fun...different kinds of fun but both are great! Be safe and get some video of the launch : )
Excellent! Very well produced documentary. Just makes me want to take my PocketShip out to the TX200. The video looks very similar to when I did the FL120. Seems like the same kind of challenges. Now if I could only convince my wife....
Great video. I didn't make it there in 2016 as I took the Jani J to Lake Superior. It was a pleasure sailing with you in 2015. Your Pocket Ship sails really well. Might see you in 2017. Not sure what I will do yet.
Thanks! I fixed the centerboard. Turned out in was an easy fix, but a little work to diagnose. I have leaned a lot about film making and will include drone footage next year : ) The heat will really take it's toll!
Thanks for sharing. I saw the video of one of the Hobie TIs but I don't believe they mentioned the Texas 200. This is something I have really been wanting to do.
I nornally don't like loud music to vids either and this did start off that way but mellowed entertainingly - turned out Ok. I liked that one at the ending.
It was an error in my build. The inspection ports on the centerboard box were just slightly too deep and would drag on the center board. It was an easy fix with a belt sander once I took the ports out. It was such a relief knowing the problem was solved the first sail after the fix. Thanks for watching 👍
Mark Kurtis at the time i only had one anchor. The current would have put me against the wall anyway. I took two anchors last time and will against this year. We are going back to that same beach again this year.
First of all congratulations I loved watching your journey. My son has a 1980 14' Sunfish and an old Hobie 16' catamaran witch would you recommend sailing next year in the Texas 200?
The Texas 200 has a Facebook page. There is a wealth of knowledge and some really great tx200 experienced sailors that can answer questions. I really am new at this. That being said, having enough storage for gear might be a problem on the Sunfish. I think someone sailed the 200 on a Dolphin a few years back but I could be wrong.
Man what a wonderful video, great job and thanks for posting it. Ive tossed around the idea of a CLC pocketship, but i live above the arctic circle and just shipping the kit to me would be as much as the kit itself. I did build a Goat Island Skiff that is a lot of fun, but I like the idea of a little higher gunnel and a place to sleep. How do you like your little Honda 2.3hp? Thanks again.
Thanks Mitchell. If you have a local source for marine plywood you could build one using plans and save a bunch of money. The Honda was great but I got into some really rough conditions and needed it when my centerboard was acting up and could have used a long shaft model. As far as horsepower goes it was perfect and was easy to start. Centerboard is now fixed.
Looking out my backyard at a lovely sailboat which I rescued from certain oblivion mast and as new sails and mast on Keppel island definitely urged me to get off my back side and go to sea she's a look of a North sea Nordic boat clinker sided grp hull with bowsprit. Great video, I am just finishing my Pocket Ship, should have it in the water next month. You did a nice job on yours. I'm always comparing other Pocket Ships to see if I want to do this or that. Do you have two reefs in your main sail? What was that table thing in the companionway? What is the top speed your boat has done? Can't wait to get mine out there.
Good job on your nearly completed Pocketship! I did have the sail reefed to the second set of points. The wind was 25 knots with three foot waves on the second day. It is amazing how much air the jib will catch with the main reefed all the way. I finally rolled up the jib and was still doing over 7 to 8 knots according to the GPS. The table thing is an ice chest : ) I strapped in the ice chest on the opposite side of the outboard motor so that I would have room to sleep in the cabin without moving too much stuff.
I've been wanting to build a CLC pocket ship for a while now (been a chesapeake bay sailor my whole life) but I've never built a boat before, and the time/monetary investment as I'm coming out of college kind of scared me away
There were so many really cool boats on that trip. The preregistration for this year's 200 is the biggest ever. Starts in a couple of weeks. I am gearing up for another bigger and better video.
That looks fun and challenging. But the course doesn't end where it began, so how do people make it back to the starting point to pick up their vehicles? What if you exit the race early?
Most of the participants drive their tow vehicles and trailers to the finish and leave them there. The organization has a bus ride back to the starting point. If you leave early you are pretty much on your own. Since I live at about the halfway point I made different arrangements.
Hey I’ve got a question about your centerboard. I’ve also got a CLC Pocketship and this past weekend the centerboard got stuck in the up position and won’t go down. Is that the same problem you had and if so how did you fix it? I’m not sure if the best way to access and fix the problem.
