- Difficult to explain what constitutes a smash hit record, but Howard Morrison's unparalleled bi-lingual live version of How Great Thou Art (Whakaaria Mai) became a Number One hit that topped the NZ singles charts for weeks on end. Seen here performing his signature tune mid-career in 1982, little wonder this remarkable performance is followed with a standing ovation as Sir Howard demonstrates the vocal prowess that helped cement his unique position at the apex of NZ entertainment...

This transformed me as a teacher, a mum, and as a human.
This and Billie T James and Prince Tui should all be blasted around New Zealand to remind us of a time when we were all united through our music
1982 was perhaps the most perfect time to be a New Zealander. Absolutely perfect. Its like we had everything perfectly balanced.
and then hell broke loose..
We did. And then ,, something happened with China and the USA, nevermind the greater world.
And we were all spun into an entirely new reality. Let's get it a bit straight here,.where we can
Beautiful……I was a young 18 year old in 88 and me and my then girlfriend went out for dinner in some restaurant in Wellington - and he walked in with his lovely wife and son Temuera……..they sat across from us - and he kept smiling at us and asked us to join them for dinner…….what a kind and generous man - I will never forget his smile and the genuine love he had for everyone…….we had a wonderful night full of laughter and exquisite food ………….Thankyou for the memories Sir Howard R.I.P x 🔥💯❤️
I can imagine that. Howard was a very friendly man.
i met Sir Howard at the races at Awapuni races in 1971.we had won the big race with Gold Braid.i met him again in 1999 at a convention at a meeting.it was like yesterday.a very approachable man.he remembered that day.what a great person.cheers my freind.
Me too. I remember watching this didn't think much of him and was bored but when he rocked Maori I was awoken in that exact second.

Rest in Love my dearest Papa missing every day since you left this mortal realm and your spirit flew with God’s angels 👼 to Heaven to be with Jesus our dear Saviour and Lord. See you in the clouds ☁️ one day my father, Arohanui, I love ❤️ you 😭😭😭❤️
It’s now April 2022 and still sounds magnificent 💯✊
Thank you.
It is now January 2021, and still as great as EVER!
The man
Thank you.
Thanks for posting this video. It was my great pleasure to be Howard Morrison's musical director from around 1960 through to 1982 when we recorded this Howard Morrison Live concert at the Founders Theatre in Hamilton. I then went to Sydney then Perth for 10 years but returned in 1995 and again worked with (by then) Sir Howard on a number of live concert events up until he passed away. He was always a joy to work with, had a great spirit along with a wicked sense of humour. His lovely family were always in support and we shared many wonderful times together.
Ha! Your name even came up in the credits! What an incredible voice he had. Sorely missed. ❤
@@brendanlochead9530 Thanks for the comment Brendan
Do you recall a concert by the HowardMorrison Quartet in Toronto, Canada ~78? I was living in Ottawa at that time but had to goanddesperately wanted my children to experience the HQM which is deeply embedded in every kiwis heart. So I dragged my elder daughter, who was about 7 out of school and we took the bus then train to Toronto, arriving just before the concert started to a theatre Packed to the rafter with fellow kiwis. When the concert finally finished to ringing applause. My daughter and I caught the milk train back to Ottawa. I have no idea when we arrived but the train had lurched to a stop at every station so neither of us had a wink os sleep but I am so grateful that I hand this wonderful opportunity and my daughter still recalls it with delight. I’m grateful that I can still continue to listen to this wonderful music and your rapport.
@@kaypanchmatia959 Dear Kay, thank you so much for your post. How nice to receive such a long and detailed post from Canada (are you still living in Ottawa?). Nice to read about your love of Howard's music and your long (and no doubt arduous) trip with your young daughter to Toronto for the concert. I wasn't with Howard and his quartet during the his overseas trip. I would have been too busy at the time with lecturing at WAAPA in Perth. After 10 years I eventually left Perth and returned to NZ where I continued to be involved in University level lecturing, Television music and live performances. All best to you both. Wayne.
It is now January 2020 & this song is still awesome!

As a kid born of the 1960's; THIS Song By Sir Howard Morrison (a distant Cousin) was one of the greatest I ever had the Priviledge of hearing: Representing as it does that Proud Heritage of New Zealanders.
I am no Christian, despite having grown-up as a Biblical Scholar.
NONETHELESS: Sir Howard Morrison singing This; His 'Signature Song' Gifts to Me and Mine a Truth - Immortal.
I Wish My Late GrandFather (Veteran of Passchendael, Third Battle of Ypres; Oct 4th, 1917) Could have lived to have heard this.
I feel certain He would have both Rejoiced (in this Song) and Agreed.
Kind and Respectful Regards to ALL who fell there:

I am forever grateful to TVNZ for giving me the opportunity as sound-engineer to record his TV Spectacular Show, with Howard performing at his best in Hamilton in 1982. The task of mounting a large-scale outside-broadcast (OB) away from base in Auckland (for sports for example) was relatively routine but for a musical production it required an enormous array of extra microphones and specialised recording equipment to be packed and transported to the event. This was set up in the Green Room of The Founders Theatre, separately to the main vision van. With a near full-sized orchestra (in great form as well), plus Howard, the Yandell Sisters as 3-part backing group and multi-micing the full house audience, all sub-mixes were recorded on 16-track Otari 1" multitrack tape. The musical tracks for the show and later the LP and CD I mixed in stereo back at TVNZ's Auckland Sound Suite 5, then synchronised by timecode and laid back on the master edited videotape to become the final stereo broadcast. I was particularly chuffed to engineer this show as I am originally a Hamiltonian and well remember hearing The Howard Morrison Quartet play on the family radio in the late 50s and early 60s when I was just a boy. Then twenty years later I'm recording the great man himself in my home town and the amazing performance he gave us for this show.
Well said and well written Gary. I have always enjoyed working with you during our years with TVNZ (not to mention all the commercials and jingles we recorded together at other Auckland studios).
This is the best version I've ever heard.
Love watching him so beautiful.

Amazing man, amazing song 💖
The avocado (Persea americana) is a medium-sized, evergreen tree in the laurel family (Lauraceae). It is native to the Americas and was first domesticated in Mesoamerica more than 5,000 years ago. Then as now it was prized for its large and unusually oily fruit.[3] The tree likely originated in the highlands bridging south-central Mexico and Guatemala.[4][5][6] Its fruit, sometimes also referred to as an alligator pear or avocado pear, is botanically a large berry containing a single large seed.

WOW! Makes you glad to be saved.
from what?
From the consequences of unrepentant sin, you might give it some consideration.
do you have an alarm clock?
I woke up and smelled the coffee a long time ago buddy, a bit of advice from one more experienced. If you're going to make an attempt at demonstrating an intellect, you really should acquire one beforehand. Enjoy the ride buddy, every moment, you'll have a lot of time to reflect on it.
more experience in what?
The best!
