Nowhere to Hide: I Stayed in The Weirdest Cruise Ship Cabin
Vložit
- čas přidán 13. 09. 2024
- I’ve just disembarked a cruise where I stayed in a cabin that had a feature I never knew existed onboard cruise ships. It certainly was a weird one and I spent most of the week trying to work out why the cruise line made this decision.
Normally when you look at cruise ship cabins they are pretty similar across all the cruise lines and all the ships, they’re usually made in the same factories and theres not really all that much variety that can happen in a space that usually around 9 foot wide. They will change the funishings of course but they still have to fit in a bathroom, a bed and some storage and that’s usually most of the space.
The ship that I booked this cruise on was the Costa Smeralda which is a relatively new cruise ship built in 2019. I decided to treat myself and booked a balcony cabin and I’m glad I did because thats where I found the bizarre feature. The description for the cabin said ‘Private Bathroom’ but that wasn’t exactly the case.
I booked what is called a guaranteed balcony cabin which meant that I didn’t pick the specific location of the cabin. Usually this means that you get the left over cabins that others didn’t pick but it is cheaper and I’ve never regretted the choice to do that before. I’ve had cabins right at the back of the ship, right at the front, underneath nightclubs, you name it. On this cruise though I was surprised by my cabin location.

“I was very confused why anyone would want this.” Such a sweet outlook on life. Never change, Emma!
😂 Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Yeah, my wife and I would love this. We've always talked about having a house with a open glass shower in the master bed/bath.
Va-Va Voom!
@@EmmaCruises I’m sure that was said tongue-in-cheek. She may LOOK sweet and innocent, but we know better… 😏
Even if she usually cruises with her parents and brother… 😆
So young lol
A glass wall to a shower/bathroom in a hotel room is a feature in many hotels now, especially in Las Vegas. It allows for natural light in an inside bathroom where there are no windows. It also allows for a "show" if desired.
Yep Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. What happens on a cruise chip gets reported all over CZcams. 😁
I actually can understand this
If you're alone, you could open the curtain and look out the window when having a shower and see the world go by
If you're not alone, then you could have a slightly loud conversation while still being able to look at them as is polite
So true 😂💕
And it would be great if you're claustrophobic
True!! That would actually be so nice
If I could see the ocean, the way I would stay in that shower looking out on it singing my heart out…😂😂
@@snarkysharky7913 a long hot shower watching the ocean, that sounds perfect
Emma, I don’t know how you did it, but you created a wildly entertaining, and informative, 8 minute video about a shower curtain.
10/10
Hahahaha, best comment ever. 😂
I agree!
Honestly, it's the most interesting shower curtain since G.L.A.D.O.S., so....
For people who get somewhat claustrophobic, having a curtain to open on that side allows additional daylight to shine in. For sole travelers, we really like the openness within the room.
YES!!!!!! I'm a solo cruiser AND am extremely claustrophobic, so this would be perfect for me.
I’ve stayed in hotels in HongKong and Singapore that had the same “feature”. My husband thought it was a brilliant idea.😂😂😂
I believe the purpose is to get natural light in the shower and bathroom as well as allowing you to enjoy the ocean, hence why they don't have it in an inside cabin.
Yeah so true. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
It seems very expensive to add it for natural light.
But the shower seems to be so far from the balcony
A window with a curtain would give enough natural light and privacy
If you're with your partner, I don't think there's anything wrong with "enjoying the view" whether in the shower or out! 😂
Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Emma, that could be taken two ways!
I absolutely love the see thur shower wall. And we been married 46 years.
@@kennethcarter2737 Always good to have more views.
Why do some people refuse to say "husband" and "wife" any more? Or is the refusal in being one?
Hi, Emma. I'd just like to extend my gratitude from my family to yours. Your channel helped me book our first ever cruise last Nov. I started watching your videos last June and it has made quite an impact to how we'd spend the holidays last year. ❤️❤️❤️
Oh wow, amazing, thank you so much it's much appreciated! Have a great time! 🥳🥳
That glass window is really cool. Imagine showering while at sea and being able to see out through the balcony doors! Beautiful.
I think my wife and I would have a bit fun with that bathroom setup 😍 The wife would probably also appreciate the natural light and openness when doing her hair and makeup.
Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
As one who despises artificial light while the sun is out, I love the shower window idea!!!

Having lost interest in cruising since the pandemic started (I just dont like to be around strangers anymore), these videos are incredible to me. I feel like Im cruising with you!

They designed it that way to allow natural light into the bathroom. It's more common than you'd think in modern hotels, but usually there is a switch to turn the glass fully opaque.
I'm guessing the exterior shower curtain was picked because it was cheaper than a built-in while still keeping the shower curtain from getting mildewy
It’s a weird “feature”. I’ve seen it in hotels, albeit infrequently. For a time, it was de riguer in W brand hotels, for instance. Around the world, I’ve seen it most frequently in Germany and Austria, where it’s most typically a window like in your cabin, but occasionally the entire shower (sides and entrance) is in the room itself, versus the WC. And, no, these haven’t been in hotels marketing themselves as “adult”. 😅
I stayed in a hotel in New Zealand where the room had exactly this, but the ‘curtain’ was a motorised screen. The switch was by the bed…
These are quite common now in high end hotel rooms. Adds natural light to the bathroom 😜
I’ve never been on a cruise and can’t now due to health issues so watching your videos make me so happy! Thank you 🌸
Thanks so much ☺️💕
Personally since I'd be staying by myself I'd have that open the whole time, natural light in a bathroom is so nice.
I'm just as flabbergasted as you are about that shower, Emma. If you're traveling with a friend, they'd better be a REEEEEEEEEEEEEALLY good one.
😂😂😂
Love the two way shower....PARTY PARTY . This is such a funny feature, I want more glass walls...lol lol
😂😂😂
Emma : it was so you could watch the tv whilst in the shower. They are common in the better European (non-uk) hotels. TV likely on a swivel and speaker somewhere in bathroom if they had bothered.
I love how Emma built up the tension "My cabin was really weird, I'll tell you in a bit/a bit later/in a moment...."😅
Mwahahahahahaha, storytelling 😎😋
@@EmmaCruises 😁🤓
My first thought was: 'Well, if Emma wasn't cruising with her parents, no problem, oh wait, okay, separate cabins, phew' It's a strange one for sure. Two reasons I guess: (1) natural light (2) annoying your partner which is always entertaining 😁
😂😂
omg Emma thank you for mentioning that horrible mirror in most cruise bathroom. I was just on a cruise during the holiday season and tried to do my makeup in that mirror, but I just could not stand looking at myself so close up and distorted.
I don’t think humans should ever see themselves that close it isn’t natural 🤣🤣🤣
How are you, I hope you are fine. Can I talk to you, I am from Bangladesh.
I took a Rhine river cruise last year and spent a few days in Amsterdam before getting on the ship. The hotel I was staying in had a very similar setup for the bathrooms as well, I thought it was very strange as an American but chocked it up to just being a quirky design choice in the recently renovated hotel and possibly a European design thing. (Never seen it before on other Europe trips) But now seeing you see this and think it's strange just cemented the idea that somewhere someone has a very strange idea on what a normal bathroom should look like.
Yeah! I think so. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Definitely not a normal thing in Amsterdam bathrooms! I am from Amsterdam and most people here like their privacy lol
As someone who lives alone, I could never share my space with anyone. So, for me, natural light in the shower sounds great - and I would love the view while I showered.
Do you still have to pay the two person room rates though?
The shower is kinda kinky honestly 😅😅😅 it’s like a honeymoon balcony cabin or something. Like those sketchy hotels with the hot tubs in the bedroom
Yeah love heart shaped bath!! 😂
@@EmmaCruises yessss it’s giving The Sims 1 heart bed
That is an odd feature, I would hope it was disclosed when you book a specific room. I think my daughter rooming with us last cruise would've found that really awkward. Either way, you talked me into buying Captain Hudson too.
Nope not mentioned on the website at all 😂😂 That’s amazing Thank you! 😁❤️
feel they did the bathroom thing so you could be in the shower and look out through the balcony door to the outside.
Yeah I suppose so, bizarre! 😂
It would probably be fun as long as your ship does pull up along side another at port while you're showering, since the curtain can't be closed from the shower 🤣
The window is made for couples! That’s fun!
Its very common for showers/baths to have glasses at hotels where I live (Indonesia). Even for huge chain hotels like hilton or hyatt. Some even have a whole wall made from glass. Since Indo is a tropical country, we enjoy the sunlight so having this feature makes ur bathroom naturally lighted.
I worked in a hotel once that had a glass wall for the water closet. Very awkward if someone was using the room and you didn't know they were in there. I really don't know why you would want a glass wall for the toilet
@@thrumylenns2207 i understand ur situation. u should explore the world more.
I go to a resort in Mexico where you can open up French doors between the bathroom and the bedroom. You can relax in the bath while enjoying the view out the window. And I have also stayed at resorts in Malta and in Florida where there was a big bathtub right in the bedroom. I think complete privacy while bathing is not such a big deal in many cultures.
Yeah so true. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
If you are in a high rise its not uncommon to have a view from the shower/bath.
I agree, that is a real possibility!
@@redwolfexr But a full view like this? Well, the occupant would either be extremely liked or despised very quickly by the neighborhood .lol
@@mrdan2898 You can't see IN... only out.
Hey Emma, This window in the shower thing is very common in hotels in Asia. We ran into this in Thailand in November. There was a blind you could lower but it was on the bathroom side, much better I think. It did bring natural light into the bathroom but I suspect the window is for more shall we say romantic reasons for couples. Someone did suggest that if you're a man and you bring a girl back to your room, you can keep an eye on her while you use the facilities to make sure she isn't going through your stuff. That said, I just wanted to let you know that I'm finally going on my first cruise on Friday and I'll be able to finally use all the great info you have shared on your channel. I'm Alaska bound!
I imagine the curtain was an after thought as people complained about the glass wall.
I'd nope not!! Ha ha. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
It looks like an after thought to me too.
The captain hudson plushy is the motivation I need to finally book a cruise for my fiance and myself!
Yesss!! 😀❤️
LOL, you’re adorable. It is indeed common now in modern hotel bathrooms; I first noticed it over a decade ago in Miami, and more recently in Vegas. Even in Asia, I’ve learned to check photos carefully when traveling with friends after I ended up in a similar setup with a romantic partner in Shanghai. You were lucky-I’ve never seen them provide a curtain 😂. It is so cute that you found this remarkable enough to discuss when you were traveling with your partner! I think it’s only a problem if you’re traveling with a non romantic partner. But agree that it’s an unnecessary feature.
Haha, it’s good CZcams content and worth sharing with others is why, didn’t impact my cruise personally much 😂💕
Some newer hotel (on land!) designs have clear walls for the shower area, to make the room feel more spacious, or for some rooms I stayed in, because they thought it gave the design a "modern" appeal. The most fancy/risky one I've personally experienced is the Hyatt in Tokyo, where the full bathroom area (toilet and shower) were completely covered by glass walls, BUT, the minute you stepped in the bathroom space, and sensed a human being (I think that was the trigger), the walls automatically fogged up. Good thing I was by myself in the room, but at least the automatic fogging never failed!
If you are prone to motion sickness, the ability to see out to the horizon while in the shower is a godsend.
I do, 😂💕
I was on a work conference, three colleagues sharing a room. They had two windows in the bathroom, probably to let natural daylight in. We had the samme issues you mentioned, except there wasn't even frosting on the glass or a way to cover them.
Oh my 😂
Ever been in a gym's shower "area"? Everybody's bodies.
@@user-sm3xq5ob5d You know that "the bathroom" is also the toilet?
@@57thorns Yuck! Seriously I do. But I think the toilet bowl is installed not directly behind that glass panel. So less visible.
What you see as a problem, I see it as an opportunity 😅
What do you mean? Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
@@EmmaCruises Could be kinky for couples, maybe you could even shower while watching the sea if you open the balcony.
Some people love to watch. That is why they did it. It’s a swingers cruise ship. Emma’s secret it out in the open. You cheeky bird! Bravo and well played.
Bizarre. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
That is what I was thinking. The voyeurs are calling to get the room now.
i was sharing a hotel room with my nephew at a family thanksgiving escape to the Morongo indian casino. same deal. big window from the room into the shower. but no frosted glass. no curtain. NO WAY. I found out every standard room was like that. What were they thinking? upgraded to a suite that didn't have that idiotic feature.
Oh my gosh 😂
Give your bf/gf or spouse a special show !
That cabin is a million times better than my apartment. I have to rethink my living space.
We went on the NCL Epic in 2019 and the bathroom situation was weird. As soon as you entered the cabin the toilet was in one side and the shower on the other. Both were frosted no curtains. There was a curtain separating the bedroom from the bathroom area but if someone was entering the cabins including the staff would have a show. Unfortunately this happened on several occasions
Oh yeah that’s such a good point. I stayed in the cabin years ago but didn’t think of that. Eek!
I went on the Epic and hated the bathrooms.
The curtain could be useful if you’re travelling with children who are old enough to shower independently but might perhaps shout for help occasionally. Or if you’re travelling with someone with mobility issues who may need you to check in with them. Or maybe I’m clutching at straws & it’s an “adult entertainment” thing 😂
So true!! Love this comment 😂💕
3:25 in Canada a purse is the same ... but also includes any women's handbag that is not huge, and does not include clutches. If men carry one it is usually just called a bag.
The glass shower wall saves space. It is a lot thinner than a traditional wall. High end hotels are doing this too. I stayed at Renaissance at the Warsaw airport and the shower had a glass wall.
Don’t think it’s much thinner than cruise cabin walls, those things are sooo thin! 😂💕
Emma, loge your videos and insite- thanks for all that you do.
I ordered our Hudson plush and the company seems to be gouging on your charitable cause. I ordered two Hudson plushes and they charged shipping like it was two separate orders (2×$7).
Yeah I ordered 5 and had to pay 5x!! Haha. It’s just how they do it. Thanks so much for ordering, exciting!!! 😀
@Emma Cruises It's such a great cause and you always do so much to give back- ordering our own Hudsons is the least I could do!
I'd love to shower with the curtain open and a view out the window to sea. Seems like a great design choice to me.
Sounds good! 😁🥳
According to my sister, in the US the outside bag is the purse, the thing you put in it that holds your money is the wallet.
are you british? I'm american and that's correct, but I was just wondering if you were british becauase you said "according to my sister"
@@notcharlie7107 I'm an American. I said my sister because, being a man, I don't carry a purse and wouldn't know myself. My wallet goes in my back pocket.
@@AtomicAgePictures oh ok i see
When I was living and travelling in China pre-pandemic, almost all of the hotels that I stayed at had a glass wall between the shower and the room. There was usually a curtain or blind that you could close if you wanted, but not always. Awkward when travelling with a 9 year old. Yeah, it was weird.
Captain Hudson will be traveling with me to Alaska in August...I'm sure he will have a great time!
Yesss!!! I love it. Thank you! 😁❤️
Just so you know they have these same type showers in some rooms in the cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. The difference was there was no blurred out area. It was truly odd since the room had two double beds and we happen to be there for a bachelor party. 😂
I stayed at a Holiday Inn in Paris that had a big picture window between the bed and the bathroom. Fortunately they had a pull down curtain that worked from the bathroom side.
Oh wow haha. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
It's so you can still get an ocean view from your bathroom, it's a new design concept in a few high end luxury rooms to increase the scenic rooms, privacy with a view.
Great Video Emma And i was your 6k like 👍
Emma, you have got to quit checking the "Hubba-Hubba-Hubba" block when you book these cruises. 😅 Yeah, that's a quirky feature for sure. Great video, btw!
😂😂😂
I'm going with they had in the plans access to the shower from the cabin, which would be nice as ship bathrooms can be a bit tight for 2+, and at the last minute realized the carpets would be constantly wet and create issues.
Thus they simply threw the glass into this opening as it was the cheapest fix.
Its a really common feature in Asia 4/5-star hotels. Often the wc is in a separate glass cubicle too. I don't' see the problem as it had privacy glass. The only weird thing is the curtain - never seen that though sometimes you get a blind which is usable from inside the bathroom. I suspect it was a late addition because some people complained
I did think that but in this case the ship is pretty new, so I don’t think so. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Yes it looked very much like a late afterthought.
We must have had a REALLY budget cabin on the Achilles Lauro. The shower and toilet were combined, so you had to put the toilet paper outside if you wanted to shower 😄😄
😂😂😂😂
Best vlogger at sea without a doubt.
Thank you! 😁❤️
well other than drinking pepsi and eating on the ship emma doesn't do much
Depending on where you are in the US, Americans will say either purse or handbag, or both words to describe what you'd call a handbag.
Love the trophy wife showers. They are showing up in more high end hotels also which is nice.
Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
I ordered a Captain Hudson to go with my many American Airlines pilot bears (and on El Al pilot plush animal too). I am a flight attendant and so excited to add Captain Hudson to my collection.

Awwhhh!!!! I love that thanks so much 😀🤘🏼
I could see the glass wall in the bathroom helping alleviate someones claustrophobia.
I’ve stayed in a hotel in Las Vegas and another in New York that had completely clear glass panels (no frosted bit) between the shower and bedroom area. Very strange idea!
i wonder if the shower window could also be for noticing someone coming into the room or even seeing if anyone is hiding in the shower when you come in haha
I like the shower dance 🤣
😂😂
Some mainland hotels have been doing this as well, where there is a glass partition, totally see through from the room into the shower.
Absolutely incomprehensible that people would do this!
The only thing I can figure is natural light would help with mold issues. Otherwise, can't imagine!

That curtain is certainly a remarkable feature! Thank you for the video!
I have been to only one cruise trip so far and your videos make me want to book another one very soon….
So some hotel rooms have this also when they have a view. Basically it’s so that you can always be able to see the view outside your window. (I’ve only seen it in Utah, Snowbird resort and in Zion National Park myself but that’s the purpose of having a window in the bath/shower.)
I stayed in a hotel in Minneapolis that had a shower like that. But the glass was very frosted and for the most part you could only see a form in the shower. I think it's meant to be for a couple on a romantic adventure.
Yeah maybe. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
My husband might enjoy the curtain, haha. However, a more solid pocket or bifold door would make more sense.
That bathroom "window" is fairly common in Eastern and Southeastern Asia... maybe the ship architect was from there?
Love listening to your commentry.
There might be a space advantage of having a window between the bathroom and the cabin.
Even if the walls are thin, a window is typically even thinner. ITs also better acoustically, its easy to keep clean and of cause also water tight.
Having it next to the shower kind of make sense of that perspective. Gives the shower 3 or 4 cm more space.
„Why would they do this?“ Well, you can have a daylight bathroom/shower or can be nice watching your better half showering :).
Wow! costa really did well for this cruise! Great review 5 Stars 🌟

Many hotels on my Asian travels have had glass walled bathrooms. Some with frosted glass some with blinds to cover the glass, Often the toilet is secluded by a second partition and door. I am not a fan, but I dont let it spoil my stay.
Cool to give the person taking a shower the option to look out at the sea while showering. To have the curtains on the other side however leaving the person showering completely vulnerable to an uncomfortable prank is very odd. 🙈🚿
