All jokes aside, the writers of this skit really analyzed the black eyed peas at their prime lol.
Is that who they were? I didn't get this one at all. Wasn't really listening to pop music in the early 2000s.

That whole part where Cecily just keeps singing "the people in the place" over and over in response to questions is one of the funniest moments she's had this season.
Only funny part of the skit. Lizzo remains terrible. The Asian guy has never been funny. Aidie Bryant plays the same exact character in every sketch. The black dudes are funny enough. It’s just a blah show anymore.

I used to think their lyrics were dumb, until I traveled to Thailand, India, and a bunch of other countries and heard people who spoke very little English singing along with these songs at every bar. I realized it’s actually genius, they have huge global hits that don’t need to be translated.
I have to agree. I always thought that was why Black Pink was globally successful for the same reason.

Developing simple catchy lyrics that can be used globally is a successful marketing strategy.
I never stopped to think about how ridiculous those lyrics are... I love when someone points stuff like that out!! Great sketch and amazing singing, they sounded EXACTLY like the real song!!

Hate to sound hipster, but I have. It's the Ole Tubthumping rip. They actually made a horrible song to prove that people are stupid enough to eat it up. Which, ironically, is very clever. So is it a success, or a failure? 🤔 meh, I'm up at 4am pondering such things. (The snl skit was fun).
Afterthought: it's not horrible, but it is a horrible earworm. Nickelback sux, just thought everyone should know.

I always thought these songs were a social experiment to see how bad a lyric could be and still be in a hit. They literally list the days of the week.

I love the Black Eyed Peas, and really loved this skit. No one listens to these songs for deep, thought-provoking lyrics...just for the silly, fun, danceable, and singable fun.

I listened to all of these songs on repeat freshman year of college during my workouts. this skit is amazing.

The listener just endows the lyrics with meaning with their own impulse to move and have fun, making the audiences impulse the subject of the song. Their songs are about timing, impulse and beat, creating a sense of spontaneity. Imagine how much of a musical genuis you have to be to make an audience go excited with only “boom boom pow”.

The deconstruction of the Black Eyed Peas lyrics and thought that went into this skit makes it one of the most epic ones of late. Such a good job, SNL!
This supports the notion that record sales depend more on luck than skill. You could also argue the BEP was the first sign of the human species declining. Somehow we became so lost that we appreciated garbage lyrics and beats from them. No advanced species would value their contributions.
This was so funny. Excellent writing and delivery! Lizzo seems like such a fun person to work with. Hilarious she almost lost it a few times.

well it took a bit for me to get into pop, but I was there before black eyed peas. I grew up on rap. rock and roll was always cool too. And black eyed peas is still great to me. a fun party song to mix it all together, bring it on.
ever been in the military or any setting where people are from everywhere and listen to their own genre mostly? drinking coubtry songs, hard and party rap, pop or rock and roll....well THAT'S the place where black eyed peas shine the most. Put that on and EVERYONE feel like a PIECE of what they like is beinf represented.

Agreed. I keep thinking about how no one actually sang the original version after a month or so, it just morphed into the "clean" version after people (and the label, no doubt) recognized that the word isn't quite the same as hyphy's "get stupid."
