  • The House of Rugby team bring you the third of their Japan mini-pods from Hibiya Park. Alex is joined once again by Kirstie Stanway of Sky Sports New Zealand to reflect on the semi-finals, look at the reaction of the All Blacks faithful after defeat to England, and to discuss just why Eddie Jones' side were so dominant in Yokohama.

    The All Blacks and their supporters always believe that they are going to win, and I would even say that the NZ public almost demand it. However the All Blacks had every right to expect to win, given their stellar record. England just played an unbelievable game. The question that still needs to be answered is can they repeat that level of performance and keep on doing it. If England want to compare with All Blacks lets see if they can dominate world rugby for the next eight years. Given that performance even a Bok supporter, as I am, has to admit that the England looks like it could do the same to the Boks. I do think the Boks will ask a different set of questions of England though, so I am just hoping that final gives us a good contest at least. Go the Boks!

    She’s a good sport for coming back on and I respect that but I still feel like she is just an all black fan rather than a rugby journalist. Sure, New Zealander’s may not watch the NH rugby games but as a rugby reporter, that is her job. Kinda crazy she doesn’t keep up to date with other games round the world.
    I’ve pretty much watched every game of this World Cup with intrigue especially with 2nd tier matches and I’m just some punter who has a run around on a Saturday!

    Alex, very classy and sympathetic as ever. And it was the right thing to do to ask for respectful responses at the end. That said, it would also have been the right thing to do to moderate the jingoism and dismissing of the opposition in such an offhandish manner. She's either a journalist or a fan. Yes, you can be both. Just not at the same time when you're working. I think that's what was so off in the initial pod. Anyway, credit to her for fronting this....although a lot of the mea culpa was contextualised by 'we in New Zealand'. If you're going to 'own it' then please own it yourself.

      It's not NZ fans collectively, a whole lot of NZ fans do follow the sport holistically. But because the ABs are so nationally iconic a lot of people in NZ who don't have the time or passion to follow other tournaments will only pop up to follow the ABs and it's a significant portion of the population who fall in that category.

    Well done Kirstie, that interview took a lot of guts to do.
    People giving her flak for not knowing about NH rugby don't understand the NZ rugby fan mindset.
    For them, the AB's are the ONLY team that matters.
    The vast majority will watch their club play and the AB's play. I doubt most even watch the other games in the Rugby Championship that don't feature the AB's, let alone 6 Nations.

    The point about NZ being AB fans not Rugby fans is spot on, helps the rest of the world to understand where they're coming from. Also, in NZ the media don't help as they are very insular and fail to report on or show anything to do with NH rugby. Also, their pay TV doesn't offer anywhere near the level or quality of coverage the likes of Sky/BT Sport gives to the UK/European game.

    Fair play to Kirstie to come back on, she’s a good sport and Alex is a gentleman and a class act. I do think that the NZ reaction to the AB loss is a bit over the top. The nature of sport means no team in any sport ever wins 100% of the time. This wasn’t a huge upset either because England have been steadily improving and have world class players so they ought to have been worried. NZ got beasted by SA pack in the first game, hammered an Irish team that played so poorly I reckon even Australia would have put 40 points on them so I don’t really understand why this AB team were being so highly lauded before they played England. Steve Hansen should be rightly proud of what he’s achieved and the NZ media should realize that and accept that on the day, they got beaten by a better side. It happens, that’s Sport.

    • @tristanm6392
      @tristanm6392 Před 4 lety

      Your spot on all your remarks on the ABS games with The reaction of being beaten and the SA pack etc yeah too much was read about that Irish hammering, they asked no questions of the ABS defence only once or twice in second half then when they did they scored 2 converted tries inside 10 minutes which were quite easy too so ABS had a training run against them, Kirstie and others are living in the past of AB dominance during McCaw era post that they have been found out some what so they shouldn't be expected to keep smashing teams because they simply aren't as good anymore plus other teams have well and truely caught up if not passed them, the ABS bloody mindness to not change there game up from just attack attack attack will continue to give them more pain if they don't look themselves in the mirror
