Portrait of Jennifer Jones

- Hollywood has had its share of upset newcomers such as the young actress who makes a splash and stuns the Academy by winning the Oscar. Such winners included Katherine Hepburn in Morning Glory, Bette Davis in Dangerous, Louise Rainer in The Great Ziegfeld, Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, Hilary Swank in Boys Don't Cry and most recently Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook. Phyllis Isley starred in a couple small roles before changing her name to Jennifer Jones and making a screen test for The Song of Bernadette. She went on the win Best Actress (1943) at the Oscars for that role which started a streak of Oscar nominations for Since You Went Away (1944), Love Letters (1945), and Duel in the Sun (1946). Her last nomination was a decade later for Love is a Many Splendored Thing in 1955.
Married three times, Jennifer keep her life very private. Her second marriage was to producer David Selznick and she made fewer films, eventually fading from the public eye. In truth, Hollywood is rarely glamor, but often tragedy and Jennifer had her share with a bout of breast cancer, her daughter's suicide and her own attempted suicide. Jennifer's privacy is one reason why today we don't celebrate her as much as other great actresses.
The title and inspiration for this tribute comes from Portrait of Jennie. The first image (0:08) you see in blue is a painting from Portrait of Jennie (1948) which was owned by David Selznick and a future husband tried to purchase. Instead, Norton Simon settled for becoming Jennifer's third husband. The blue tint (and subsequent sepia) is inspired by the movie's green tint near the end before becoming a full color portrait. At 2:04, Jennifer poses for the portrait in the movie which was filmed at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Cloisters.
Music are the main themes for Frances and Indecent Proposal by John Barry. Frances is the sensationalized movie about actress Francis Farmer (played by Jessica Lange), a contemporary of Jennifer Jones, whose life of alcoholism and mental illness became public news. Quite the opposite of Jennifer Jones. But ironic for this tribute, Jennifer Jones donated $1 million in memory of her daughter to creating a foundation for mental health.
Movies in this tribute include:
The Song of Bernadette (1943)
Duel in the Sun (1946)
Portrait of Jennie (1948)
We Were Strangers (1949)
Madame Bovary (1949)
Ruby Gentry (1952)
Beat the Devil (1953)
Indiscretion of an American Wife (1953)
Wonderful hommage to one of the great actresses ever: Jennifer Jones!
+Carlos Jorge Stöckel Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
One of the most moving tributes I've ever watched for Jennifer Jones! Your selection of music matched with the scenes from her movies showing the multitude of her emotive expressions captured her bravado, sensitivity and beauty. Thank you so much!
Jennifer Jones, so as LOVE, is a many splendored ...woman and actress
what a gorgeous lady and a terrific actress.
+Global TV and Movies Thank you! I agree!
Jennifer was so stunningly beautiful, These clips accompanied with John Barry tracks are just great, gorgeous actress she was.
Glad to see this amazing tribute to Jennifer Jones. She is one of the most underrated actresses ever. Nice choice of images and music is perfect.
Such a BEAUTIFUL tribute to one of my favourite actresses! I haven't seen that many films of Jennifer's but I've loved her in every one. She really is such an underrated beauty and forgotten talent. You chose so many wonderful clips and the music is gorgeous as ever :)
It would appear that the directors of her films were in love with her themselves - just look at how they photograph here! Beautiful. Barry's scores compliment the clips you've chosen - and the moods of those clips - magically. Stunning tribute to Jones, I have to see more of her work.
Beautiful.
Thanks, Dina! Yes, she's at her best in Madame Bovary. She's like a cross between Vivian and Jean Simmons.
Beautiful tribute to the flawless jennifer jones,i loved her in all her films but my top 4 will always be,song of bernadette, portrait of jenny, gone to earth and carrie.Sadly, gone are the days when films of this standard are made as is jennifer RIP.
thank you for that fine portrait and the music-
Very beautiful tribute, Doug, as ever, to this delicate, beautiful and unappreciated actress. I've seen her only in one movie yet, Beat the Devil, where she doesn't look her best with blonde hair, but she's truly charming in Madame Bovary and reminds a little of Vivien Leigh, as we discussed. Wonderful music, you can show any actress as an ethereal creature!
Wonderful, maravillosa, Wunderschön !!!
Wonderful tribute! Jennifer Jones never got enough credit for her talent but the minute I saw her in "Duel in The Sun", I was in love! Carrie sealed the deal, I love her strong mix of innocence and fragility combined with strong eroticism. The clip you caught at 4:05 til 4:10 is truly heartbreaking! She was a wonderful actress! I love her to bits!!!! Thank you so much for your tribute!!!
D, I'm elated with this beautiful production! The Barry music was haunting, and really complimented an incredibly lovely actress. I answered "Si!" to the video response. I hope it registered. My first JJ film was Portrait of Jennie, and I've been a fan ever since. Rarely seen "We Were Strangers," with John Garfield was another winner. She gave us a fine accent as China, La Cubana. I'm so thankful for this beautiful work! Stunning!
bel collage di immagini e la musica struggente è magnifica....ti consiglio di vedere il film ritratto di jennifer, dove recita anche ala regina del silent movie lillian gish

Portrait of Jennie 😍
And I always wanted to see that movie! But having seen her other films, she is more beautiful in Madame Bovary.
Thank you for this tribute to Ms. Jones, she truly deserves it!
Always a favorite Actress of mine, so beautiful and sexy she combines the two attributes while remaining softly feminine without caricature of a " sexy fragile female" as too many actresses did in Old Hollywood and some today would like to do except that todays culture requires pure lust and violence persona of even the actresses and a lot of other perversity I won't sully this tribute to mention.
Ms. Jones I especially liked in : Duel in the Sun with Gregory Peck, I watched that old film well past its year when produced and was enthralled, that's when I became a Jennifer Jones fan. For me she ranks even higher than the great Susan Hayward, Lana Turner and Joan Crawford. Because, Jennifer Jones had something else, a "spirit" almost animal, that drifted into the film and whatever character she portrayed. She made each character uniquely hers. She was also good in Portrait of Jenny with Joseph Cotten, Mr. Cotton never had any appeal for me except in the two films he was in with Jennifer. Cotton was also featured in Duel in the Sun playing the good brother to bad brother Gregory Peck, and what a bad guy Gregory was, and OH!… so handsome and sexy. He and Jones made a fabulous romance in the picture, I later bought the movie on VHS and have watched it several times, too great to ever really tire of it.
Thank you! There are several clips from Madame Bovary here like at 6:15, channels Vivien Leigh.
Thank you for a moment of beauty. I'm an old white hared man and still a sucker for a good love story. She was one of the best at that per trail.
She does pose well in a beret as in We Were Strangers and Ruby Gentry. :)
You have a keen eye for beauty.
Más que una artista de Hollywood fue y será una dama femenina con valores y principios bien comentados para mí su mejor actuación fue con el legendario williams Holden en Hong Kong extraordinaria película romance de altura por ambos actores
i wish you still alive i love you ur so amzing and most beautiful women
