  • Hey you! If you've stumbled upon this video because you're uber nervous about an upcoming tonsillectomy, then fear no more. This is a day by day (missing a couple days) vlog of my experience where I hope to put your mind at ease.
    All opinions on the following experience are just that, opinions. I am not a health professional nor do I claim to be remotely amateur when it comes to the science of the body. All tips are simply what I found best for me.
    Social Media:
    Instagram: @katrena
    katrena?hl=en
    Tips/things I forgot to mention:
    1. The natural taste in your mouth will not be the same for weeks (Im going on week 6 and still have a weird taste in my mouth)
    2. You will have an excess in mucus production that is incredibly annoying but totally natural. This will stop once you hit two weeks.
    3. Your breath will also take a hit for the first couple weeks, no matter how much you brush.
    4. Don't workout for the first two weeks.
    5. You will experience minor ear pain.
    6. DO NOT USE A SPIT CUP! SWALLOW AS MUCH AS YOU CAN NO MATTER HOW INFREQUENTLY. It's all a part of the healing process (at one point, I was swallowing once every 10 minutes. None the less, I always swallowed).
    Thank you for watching!

I’m considering getting my tonsils out because I’ve had recurring tonsil stones paired with ear pain on and off for about a year now. I’m super nervous about the recovery and losing all that weight. I’m glad you didn’t tell us the weight you lost bc in fact I might have been triggered, lol. Did you have any ear pain before your surgery? And also did you during your recovery? I hope you can continue to keep us updated on your process! I’ve heard that it takes up to a year for a full recovery, but it varies between people I’m sure.

      @katrenathings  Před 4 lety +3

      Hi Kyra, thanks so much for watching! I totally understand. I knew weight loss was naturally a part of the process. Please dont be too nervous. I never experienced ear pain before my surgery. During the recovery I did experience some (Ive heard others say the ear pain was the worst part but that just was not the case for me, it was super minimal). I will tell you now, I am 5 months in and I still have this weird feeling in the back of my throat. It gets worse when I dont stay hydrated. My doctor said to expect full healing at the 6 month mark or even a year. The surgery is sooo worth it to no longer have stones. I hope you have a good experience should you choose the surgery!

    Thanks so much for posting this, girl! Very informative. I'm actually getting surgery soon, too. I am wondering if you could explain more about what it was like to get put to sleep? This is the part that freaks me out!! Like, what does it feel like? How do they do it? What does it feel like when they put the stuff in, like do you get sleepy or is more like wide awake to instantly out? Could you have stayed awake if you would have tried or is it impossible? Haha. Basically whatever you remember about that part would be helpful. Thanks so much!

    • @katrenathings
      @katrenathings  Před 4 lety +2

      Why hello there, thank you for your compliment! I was so afraid for that part too! Like, what if I wake up during surgery and my life becomes a horror film?! But trust me, the surgeons who perform the anesthesia know what they are doing and will prep and assure you beforehand. Many questions are asked to ensure your safety before you go under. Girl, I tried to fight it. It is impossible. They give you laughing gas before which makes you feel weird but not in a bad way (I actually started laughing and had to fight myself to stop). Then there is the injection through your arm which again, is impossible to fight. It's like the sleep process but rapidly sped up. Your eyes will start to feel heavy, and then you're out. Next thing you know, they will be waking you up (they don't wake you up for a while initially). I remember about 20 seconds after they put the mask over my face (this releases the laughing gas), I slowly said "This tastes really bad." Immediately after I said bad, I was out. You will be fine :)

    thank you for sharing your experience! i also had tonsillectomy november 11th at age 30. So today is day 18 and I still have troble swallowing food it gets stuck and I think my uvula is still a little bit annoying. I have the feeling like I have something stuck in my throat all the time. Have you experienced something like that?

      @katrenathings  Před 4 lety +2

      Thank you for watching! Oh I totally know that feeling. It felt like my uvula was just swollen and constantly almost making me gag. That will definitely go away with time. As well as the difficulty swallowing. I recently went to my doctor to ask about some tender spots that I still have (it's been 3 months since my surgery). He basically told me that complete healing does not occur until around 6 months. So, if you are not completely normal by then, it would be time to worry. Until then, happy healing!

      @@katrenathings i'm having the same issue! its officially 2 weeks, and my Uvula, still slightly swollen, and its making it difficult to swallow, food particles arent going down as smoothly, and gets stuck in the back of my throat, and i always have to drink water to get it down. The uvula has been my biggest issue. It also makes it difficult to sleep laying down, i still have to sleep with my head propped up with like 5 pillows. How long until you saw that your uvula swelling went down to normal? (THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO by the way, it helped me so much!!)

    Last I was told you're not supposed to take ibuprofen because it's an NSAID and thins the blood. If bleeding were to occur it makes it harder to clot. I personally did bleed on day three because of a hiccup. Luckily it clotted, but yea that's the only thing I'll say. Consult with your doctor mine told me to take liquid Tylenol(Acetominophen) if I had problems with the hydrocodone.
    Also one other tip if you have the liquid hydrocodone with Acetominophen and Alcohol. Measure out your dosage and then dilute with water. It'll make the alcohol burn way less and make it easier to go down. I personally went to walmart and in the kitchen section found a measuring shot glass basically because my bottle didn't have one. (1 table spoon = 15 ml)
    The alcohol made it a nightmare to swallow. for a little it got stuck in my nose, drinking water was hard for a couple days felt like I was drowning(same sense if you've been in a pool and had water go in your nose). If that happens I'd say go get jello. A large pack is 4 cups of water and when it fully sets it wont go up your nose.
    Just for anyone who does take the pain killer they get. It really helps and makes me feel normal. I've had some pretty bad ear aches and it makes those go away.

      Sarah Dagnino Today makes a week since I got mine out, and everything she said in this video is 100% true. I knew the pain would be be, but I did not think it would be as excruciating as it has been. I’m still not able to eat, it just hurts too bad. Some tips that you NEED to do, 1. always drink liquids. Set alarms throughout night cause your throat will get dry and that’s when the pain is unbearable. 2. Stay on top of your medications. Going without it for even an hour is so painful. 3. Try not to get down on yourself. It’s gonna be awful, and I’m only a week in. But just try to stay positive and think about every day being one day closer to it all being over.

Does anyone else have this sensation? I still have more white scabs on the left side vs the right side?

    • @paigeanne1325
      @paigeanne1325 Před 2 lety

      Hey hope you’re feeling better now but if you’re still dealing with that I’d ask your doctor who took them out about some mucinex! It’ll break up the congestion and you’ll be able to get it all out! If it’s safe to cough and blow your nose tho! Don’t use it if u can’t do that quite yet! Humidifier can help with the sinuses too! As for the scabs I still have my tonsils but from what I’ve heard they fall off eventually so I’m assuming ones just peeling faster than the other!

    I’m on day 8 and I have a couple of tips for anyone who may be getting the surgery soon or in the future.
    Day 8 is when I started to feel better but I could eat solid foods with minimal pain and even drink water as normal. (Don’t be like me and smoke cigarettes while your recovering, probably the worst idea I’ve had, use it as a opportunity to quit smoking.)
    The night of day 7 I was in intense pain to the point I went to the emergency room because I had no more pain killers and Tylenol was not working, they gave me 600 mg ibuprofen for pain and then some throat numbing medicine, I forgot the name but when I find it I will edit this and come back.
    Diet: the first few days do NOT eat anything solid you will hurt like hell instead eat popsicles and dairy free ice cream (dairy causes saliva build up in the back of your throat). Try avoiding oily foods because that does the same thing. Eat soup and drink chicken broth, don’t make it to hot though it may hurt.
    If you can’t drink water normally chew on a lot of ice not only will it numb the pain but it will also hydrate you.
    Play alot of video games to keep your mind off the pain.
    Save your pain killers for the very moment after you wake up because that’s when the pain is the worst. Try not to talk so much until around day 5.
    Take long relaxing baths with Epson salt and light candles and play peaceful music. Rest as much as you can and try to eat as much as you can because it will help the healing process.
    Don’t eat anything with citric acid or drink sprites. Or sodas in general.
    The pain is unbearable until after day 7 I promise you! You will be okay!

    I’m on day 9 and I was wondering when does your scabs fall off and how bad does it hurt?

      Hello Paigelyn, I honestly coudn't tell you for sure. I was way too afraid to look at the back of my throat so I never saw them. All I know is, I remember feeling random, uncomfotable burning in the back of my throat when I would eat sometimes. I was pretty sure that was the scabs coming off. That was at the end of my second week. So, if that was it, it doesn't hurt too bad. It's just a quick burn and then gone.

    Hi! You talked about swollen uvula, how long did it take you to not feel uncomfortable in your throat? Im on day 7 and my uvula is terrorizing me:(

      Hello SubPrime16, honestly that has been the most frustrating part of my experience. My surgery was 7 months ago, and that weird uvula feeling is just starting to fade away. Your experience might be different, I hope it will be!

      Thank you for responding! I went to ER and they inject me something that took this swelling off a bit, but still can feel uvula in my throat. The ONLY negative side of my surgery lol..

    The reason why they didn’t prescribe Advil is because Advil is a blood thinner and can increase your risk for hemorrhage so it’s a bit dangerous for some patient, but I’m glad it worked well for you! I’m on day 5 of my tonsillectomy, this evening has been the worst of all :( I’m also cravinggg real food.

      Oh seriously? I never knew that. Shoot I'm glad everything worked out for me. Maybe because it was children's advil it wasn't as strong. Thanks for the info! I think you're on day 8 now so hopefully things should be getting better for you, only a week more before better food!
