- Danny Kaye, Lynn Redgrave and Richard Crenna recreate a scene and the third dream sequence from the 1941 musical, LADY IN THE DARK. This was part of the second installment of Sylvia Fine's TV series, "Musical Comedy Tonight".
LADY IN THE DARK
Book: Moss Hart
Music: Kurt Weill
Lyrics: Ira Gershwin
The Songs Within The Sequence; "The Greatest Show on Earth", "The Trial of Liza Elliot (Abridged)", "Tschaikowsky" and "The Saga of Jenny (in Bb minor)"
Lynn Redgrave is stunning and so totally right to play the sophisticated, demanding role of Liza Elliot. You can just imagine the fun this show must have been for audiences seeing Gertrude Lawrence in the 1940's. And how great is it that we have a little bit of Danny Kaye's unforgettable performance. This MUSICAL COMEDY TONIGHT segment is an absolute treasure. My only complaint is that they made several abridgments in the JENNY number. But that sure won't stop me from watching this beautifully staged and performed scene again and again.
Delightful, Kaye steals the show.
Most of us a looking for the showstopper number by Kaye who originated the role Russel Paxton in the fashion designer in the 1941 Broadway musical. Its 7 minutes into this clip. By the way, the orginal Liza was the great Gertrude Lawerence. She sang The Saga of Jenny. Music: Kurt Weill Lyrics: Ira Gershwin
Why this never got revived on Broadway is beyond me.
I believe this was produced by Danny Kaye's wife Sylvia Fine. The whole show was good.
Thanks for posting the whole segment. It was especially good to see the Danny Kaye Russian composers piece to complement the Saga of Jenny.
And, of course, Danny Kaye was Sylvia Fine's husband. Isn't he a genius in this segment? The clarity, economy, flair, presence -- a masterclass.

Great scene!! Watched the performance at Basel yesterday.
Is this version of "Lady In The Dark" available on DVD ? I know we would love to see it . Especially with Danny Kaye .
I had no idea Lynn Redgrave did this!! God, she was stunning and magnificent!! Danny Kaye played in "LADY IN THE DARK" with Gertrude Lawrence, and Richard Crenna played Lawrence's husband when Julie Andrews played HER in 1968's "STAR!", which ends with "The Saga Of Jenny." No offense to the multi-talented Julie Andrews, but Lynn Redgrave plays this more in, and is better suited to, Gertrude Lawrence's style.

We need Judy.
I'd like to see Debra Harry as Liza
Who thought this was a good idea?
I love much of this show score in some of its original recordings, but this seems garish and lacking a center.
This is a Judy Garland role.
