The Tragedy of Lady Jane Grey: Facial Re-creations & History Documentary

  • Lady Jane Grey is a figure I’ve touched on before, and I made a modern version of her last year - you can check out that version on the Instagram account. Lady Jane Grey was the unlikely candidate for the throne when King Edward VI named her his heir upon his death in 1553. This left Jane in an incredibly dangerous position. Jane was tragically executed by her cousin Mary I after Mary came to claim the throne, having only reigned for 9 days as Queen of England. I wanted to recreate her also from the Streatham portrait, which is said to be the closest possible link to Jane. It’s still disputed as a true likeness of the Nine Day Queen, but is generally accepted as a somewhat poor copy of a lost original. It dates from around 40 years after Jane’s death, and includes a “Lady Jayne” description, as well as clothing that matches Jane’s era. We hope you enjoy!

ou can access information via e- mail. My parents did a geneaological european 6week trip that I read lots of tour books about the countries they'd be going to. Wow what a difference between tour books. So with those dates was able to contact cities, counties, etc. via e-mail I listed my e-mail address as well as snail mail, being 2003, plus my phone number. I was amazed at how many places called me, on the phone, to give info then sent snail mail pakages also. I was able in England and Scotland to have direct info to both my Mom & Dad that was pulled in their genealogical
      parts of the county offices.
On my Dad was able to have docs from the mid 1600's pulled. The brothers kept going back & forth like the QEll.
So you'd be best to do some preliminary genealogy here and go thru info at Salt Lake City, Mormon church has extensive genealogy information from all over the world.

Yes indeed the 12th. There is more to be known of her. It takes a bit of digging. But being in England and having access to some source material at the British Library was much to my advantage. Starkey is very persuasive in his arguments, but, in my opinion, not altogether correct.
There is a reported picture of "Jane" at Sion House. Discovery after some renovations. It is small though somewhat extraordinary as it isn't too complimentary. Having read so many source and translated materials, the various descriptions of Jane vary somewhat. But by these one can bring a full picture to mind.
      Best wishes.

I remember discovering Lady Jane Grey in middle school when I came across a book called the Nine Days Queen and then later another one called Innocent Traitor (highly recommend). I’ve always felt so sorry for her and admired how she devoted and kind she was. It feels surreal and exciting to see such a striking recreation of how she might have looked. Thank you so much for covering her!

Thank you for such a wonderful video! I've been interested in Lady Jane Grey since I saw the 1986 film "Lady Jane" starring Helena Bonham Carter and Cary Elwes. I think I read a biography of Lady Jane back in the 1990's but to be honest I don't remember very much about it. I very much enjoyed all the information you gave in this video and your recreation of her.

Thank you for such interesting work! I still love the film Lady Jane, which featured a young Helena Bonham Carter as the young but tough-minded Jane, Cary Elwes as Dudley (as they become aware that they are doomed their love for each other becomes true and heartbreaking), and a bunch of the best English actors. It also looks great…

This is so amazing seeing them come to life. Jane Grey wasn't my direct ancestor but Edith "Ida" de Grey was. Maybe you can make her come to life? That would be amazing. ❤
