- I've been training veterinarians on nutrition for 34 years and part of that is keeping up with the ever changing pet food marketing. Often it's very misleading but not harmful.This new trend is growing rapidly and is in fact going to harm pets.
Every expert has their own opinions and their own evidence of dogs are “omnivores” or dogs are “carnivores”. Experts that claim a raw diet is best. Experts that claim kibble is best. Experts that claim canned is best. They all have convincing evidence and all of it leaves us dog owners wanting to do the best for our dog, confused more than EVER!
Ask yourself what credentials and experience that so called expert has….their bias will be based on that, whether right or wrong. Plus are they selling you something. I am no expert but have been trained by brilliant people and have been challenged by some great vets who I trained, and for 34 years I saw the results that have framed my bias. In my videos u try to share what I saw and learned. That’s all I can do. And it’s great no one is paying me or influencing me. But I understand your frustration. Again, another reason I do my videos.
You have to follow what the World Small Animal Veterinary Association and American College of Veterinary Nutrition says. None of them recommend a raw food diet. There are only a handful of science diets that have been formulated by those with a PHd in animal nutrition, Hills is one of them. Farmers dog has way to much fat, unkibble recommended my dog had 200 calories a day! That would literally starve my 33 pound dog. Once I added the correct calories it was very expensive for not nearly as good nutrition as hills, so I will not look anywhere else anymore.
I have been researching dog foods for months now and I always ended up more confused. You had the key that unlocked the knowledge I needed. Thank you so much.

I totally agree!! They are amazing people and have helped so many to realize our pets food is more than just food. It’s life. We have to be in charge of our pets lives and be advocates. The best way to do so is to give them the absolute best we can and this 100% includes nutrients!!

I have two seniors dogs, I agree with your thinking. I went to Science Diet 7+ wheat corn and soy free. It’s been 3 weeks and I feel good that he’s getting what his body needs, not too much or not enough. I appreciate all the work you do I fell into the marketing trap with the grain free craze, and lost my dog too early. I’m sticking with science not media craze
Don’t forget the tv and talk show stars with their brands of food!!! 😂. Think I will stick with Purina Pro Plan and use the knowledge I’ve gotten from watching these videos to chose food for my dogs and not what “stars” or Dr Judy rants over.

You’re responsible for the protein & kefir .. yep I was suckered in. I noticed Goose didn’t digest the dried carrots and the barley was moving the same way it went in was what came out.
I’m in Texas the red ants had a meal on my grass.
I thought if I blend it up it’ll b great.
After a month he gained so much weight, fed him exactly what they suggested. Goose gained too much and now it became this huge chore.
Blending it, buying all the meat, oil, kefir….

Great video!! I so wish more people could click on this and watch + hear what you have to say. Rather, what the actual science and research has to say! Although, man the targeted ads on this video... Got this one that basically says that the kibble format is what creates food allergies and D/V issues in dogs. Like... Come on. But it's true that it's hard to explain this kind of stuff to people who don't have any idea what the allergenic process is, that proteins are what the immune system decides to react to, etc. I mean, the vast majority of people still have no idea that one of the most marketed human allergies, gluten, is just wheat protein. It's not the ingredient, it's whats contained in the ingredient!! Anyways. Hopefully this comment will boost the algo. Thanks again for the video!

I've been feeding it for 6 months or more.
My bully looks better than ever,shiny, less shedding so I have no complaints other than the price. I supplement it with low heat baked or boiled chicken...sometimes not fully cooked,doesn't hurt them .
Idk..all this is confusing but in this day in age it's all about money,not so much your pets health. Not all dogs gut make up are the same so find a food that works for u and see how it goes.
I have both my dogs on Farmer's Dog, mostly because my Queensland Heeler will not eat kibble, and I've tried all brands except the super cheap crappy kibble. I have to soak the kibble and mix it with wet canned dog food to get her to eat. I have noticed that on Farmer's Dog, my Queensland Heeler has stopped eating grass all the time, and both dogs love it. I'm not ready to give it up until something better comes along
This dog food revamp study has been a PITA!
I don't know how anyone affords premium whole dog foods kits or products for large dogs, much more if you have several of them. For my 130lb akbash 2 years-old it needs 6 to 8 scoops of regular kibble (Summer vs Winter) and the air-dried or dehydrated foods take nearly the same amount. I'd go bankrupt. It would cost $170 every two weeks for the cheapest formula (Unkibble). Up double that for Sundays and RedBarn dehydrated.
So this is what I do:
I feed 50% kibble (rotating thru best brands I find), 35% lightly cooked whole chicken, fish, and/or hamburger with its broth and bones. 15% raw veggies/fruits that are blended up and mixed-up into kibble/meats.
Every week I give these supplements, three times weekly: green powder with probiotics, cod/cold water fish oil (various brands), and. 2 raw eggs with crushed shells. I don’t give them these on the same days, I spread them out on different days.
I absolutely hate the way the Farmer's Dog does marketing by making everyone else look bad! I also hate to say that I've ended up feeding one of my dogs fresh food because it's the only thing that's worked to alleviate his stomach issues. However, I feed him Just Food For Dogs -- one of their formulas that was properly feeding trialed, and everything is balanced for maintenance. (My other dog happily eats Science Diet and is doing great on it!)
i used to work for JFFD and i definitely like them the best due to their vet team at HQ and the way they trained me when i worked for them - I literally had to complete a dog nutrition class just as a sales associate. Farmers dogs marketing is awful I agree - I also hate how they dont show the prices on their website.
Also- my dog ate JFFD for years and now eats Science diet due to his pancreatitis and cost of JFFD now that im no longer working there lol. He loooooooves their venison treats though (expensive taste, ofc)
@@fairygrl999 i ended up getting my dogs off of JFFD, they developed kidney issues and bladder stones. The Turkey has way too many carbs and very low protein content and my dogs were pretty active but put on a lot of weight. We still use their pumpkin treats :)
I tried one shipment of Farmers Dog and learned the filler they use included chickpeas and lentils. My dog, puppy at the time, had to poop constantly. What animal in the wild eats dried beans? So that's why I stopped. My dog eats a raw nutritionally complete food, not kibble. Kibble is mostly carbs, and Hill's is one of the worst
Paula, what a wild dog eats in the wild is pretty irrelevant to the discussion of nutrition science and especially longevity. If your raw diet is truly balanced than great. Go for it! We’ll have to disagree on the benefits and use of various carbs.
Dogs in South Asia are fed a diet of lenitils and chickpeas for thousands of years.
There are issues with commercially-produced pulse-based diets namely AAFCO doesn't differentiate between inactive adults and active adults, whereas FEDIAF have minimum methionine and cysteine requirements. And there's no requirements to feed-trialed the pet foods, even though many of the pet food manufacturers like Champion Petfoods were profitable enough to do so. That's the issue with nDCM: the products are not tested before being sold. You as the consumer has the right to demand pet food manufacturers to test their food before shipping them.
Again, my story is, after changing our dog's food she was on for years, to Farmer's Dog, we went through a 3-4 month nightmare of her having an allergic reaction to it. During that time, we found out another 3-4 neighbors had to take THEIR dog off of Farmer's due to allergic reactions. She has now been on a mix of Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach Salmon Formula & Farmina Cod formula, and has completely recovered from all that itching she had on Farmer's.
To be fair, not everyone has that experience. lol!
Thank you for your very informative videos! What you are saying makes perfect sense to me. I was feeding my senior dog the wrong food and was paying a fortune. No more! He is now getting a good quality senior food. He is also feeling better!

What is the best fresh dog food that's healthy for dogs? I have been feeding my dog Ollie, but not sure if I should switch to something better? Unless Ollie is one of those that's better for dogs.
My dog has been on Ollie for years. He is healthy and always has good bloodwork results. My vet is happy with his health 🐾♥️🐾
A vet on here animaldocrea said that Olllie was the only fresh food to meet nutritional value so it’s good, but she said it’s just as good as a scientific kibble too, your choice but it’s likely doesn’t have the correct balance of nutrients like he is saying for the different life stages of your dog. Senior dogs need less protein and different nutrients than a puppy so the fact they make it “all life stage” is bad

Hi, I just watched this video. Very informative. Thanks. I have been feeding my 11 yr old choc lab with health issues, and my overweight 9 year old Shitzu Ollie’s these last 2 months with varying results. I have tried finding more detailed nutritional info on this food, but it seems to be impossible. All they give you is protein,fat,fiber and moisture. Where can I find the calcium/phosphate levels? Thanks 😊
Beth, most companies require calling them and asking for the dry weight analysis. Those ages are definitely into geriatric nutrition, especially if health issues.
I’m not an expert. But wouldn’t it just be different portions with all life stages dog food? I eat the same as my kid or grandma and grandpa. Wolves all eat off the same carcass. It’s just different amounts right?
That’s exactly what the proponents of All Life Stage foods say. It sounds logical but it’s not accurate. It’s more the ratios of different nutrients. You wouldn’t restrict different nutrients by the same percentage if you’re trying to be optimal. A few nutrients might match up getting the same restriction but not all. One easy example would be lower fiber in you get animals and higher fiber in geriatric animals, kinda like people. Fat and protein would be reduced but not at the same percentage. I hope I’m explaining that clearly enough. I should have addressed it in the video but I’ll be addressing that in my next one. Thanks!

Help! I'm looking for a food that will make my 7 month old puppy's poop better (it's voluminous, stinky, and too soft! hard to pick up!), And help her put on weight. She is 50%border collie, 30% standard poodle and 20% lab. she is only 31 lbs and got a body score of 3 at the vet's. She also sheds a ton! (more shedding than any other dog I've had even with the poodle in her!)

I was hoping you could answer a question for me, I’m looking for a dog food for my 1.5 year old Australian Cattle Dog. We’ve fed her Hill’s since the day we’ve had her, puppy food and then adult food. We have taken her to the vet recently because her Anal Glands keep filling repeatedly, the vet advised us to change her diet, any recommendations for this particular problem?

@@moonmaiden585 any of the main brands of puppy food are fine. Yes, All Life Stage is actually puppy food.
So, on vets, and chronic disease: I lost lot of trust in most of the veterinary community after looking into the long term studies on health and behaviour hormonally intact (intact/vastecomy/ovary spaying spay/tubal ligation) vs gonadatomized (full spayed/neutered). It's an example of the how studying health is complicated, and issues that can creep into studies and be used to promote poor advice.
Dogs in lower income households are more likely to to be housed outside/have increased time outside, have an owner with reduced time spent at home (due to increased work needs), be more rural (further from care), be a working dog (guard, farm, etc), have an owner with untreated mental and physical health issues (which can effect care), and have reduced veterinary care (but may have some) ... and all that is very relavent to disease, behaviour and lifespan studies. Two of the main drivers are for death in intact dogs in some studies are trauma (car hits, etc) and infection (like.. from being exposed to other animals including wild). These studies use veterinary data, but not income/financial struggle information, but rates of sterilization very much depend on that. Size of dog can also have socioecomic influences (due to smaller homes/working needs), and many studies don't ensure similar size/age range in groups. As far as I can tell, this biased/miseleading data is what's being used to recommend and promote full spay/neuter as only stetrilization option (other options aren't taught in vet schools), including having those studies being directly quoted on veterinary websites (one of the studies was done by a large veterinary corporation).
So. It's possible that for some breeds, particular male, large, pure breeds before adulthood, reducing hormones does more bad than good both for health and behaviour/mental health (there's not really mental health studies in dogs in this regards -- it's all behaviour problems for humans, so an.ix.ious behaviour problems are seen but poor mental health isn't what's being assessed and can be missed if doesn't cause problems). While reducing hormones decreases some hormone based issues (reproductive issues, horny issues), it increases obesity, joint/muscle issues, blood/bone cancer, digestive issues (microfauna changes possibly), anx.i.ety (thus the behaviour issues), skin issues, maybe allergies, maybe some types of seizures, etc. Lot of these issues are cross species, with better controlled studies in other species (like with anxi.e.ty). Aka, the majority of veterinary industry may be promoting medical care to some dogs that may be more likely to cause chronic pain issues and may decrease lifespan. But, the studies have so many damn issues -- the lower lifespan in intact from likely being outside more and having less access to vet care means they didn't get old enough to get later in life issues.
So... yea my trust in veterinary industry got destroyed after looking into this. If this is what's happening for such a common practice, what else is happening?
Is there similar issues in dog food studies? I looked over a meta study on hormones and cat/dog health trying to assess the different digestive health needs, but I don't recall it going much into dog food specific studies.
Anyhow, something else to consider regarding food: the more ethically produced for the livestock, the likely worst environmentally/worse for wildlife due to ground space usage and storage. It's a weird paradox that effects both human and pet food. A chicken given free range is better for the chicken then being crowded in a commercial space, but that free range space takes more from nature for amount of food it produces.
I know there are breed variations. Like Qimmit and Greenlandic Dogs benefit more from high fat than high carbohydrates. And breeds such as Salukis and Sloughis are more adapted for agriculture and benefit more from carbohydrates than from fats. That's confirmed by science.
Ancedotely, large breeds like Anatolian Shepherds and Rottweilers need low protein, high carbs to grow up with straight legs according to the breeders. But I haven't dove into the research into whether or not science agrees with folklore husbandry
Yep,pay to play system,same as human Healthcare n such. My dog does great so far on farmers dog. Price sucks but kibble is worse and self prepared meals are time and more time consuming.
I Give my 10 year old female Min pin "Hills Science diet perfect weight adult for small dogs" dry food. Is that still okay or should I be switching her to the Hills senior dry food? She doesn't have any diagnosed kidney problems as of now. She does have some minor liver issues and takes Denamarin for that, but no Kidney issues. Just wondering if it's still okay to give her just the adult food
Julie, my 10 yr old Bichon mix is now on Perfect Weight and Joint. The nice thing about most Hills diets is they are very renal friendly with controlled protein and minerals. Since blood values are all good, we’re all set.

I stumbled on this video while looking for an alternative to Farmer Food. I tried Hills and Purina Pro both made my pup sick. I changed to Farmers and it worked for her. Been on it since she was a pup. I am looking for another brand, due to cost and not enough protein compared to the cost. The three you mentioned in the video I passed on. I found much better brands. You said Farmers is puppy food. Farmers ask for your dog’s weight, age, list of health condition. As the dog age, weight change and health condition is updated they say the formula they send customers change. I did not know all along it would be puppy food. They are frauds.
@@zsmith1015 I think you’ll like Farmina. Should be less expensive than Farmers and much better nutrient levels. Yes, all Farmers Dog formulas are All Life Stage, so puppy food nutrient levels. Don’t make the mistake of higher protein being worth the cost. Optimal protein is what you want to pay for!

OK, I’m not really that interested in the firm of food, whether extruded, canned, freeze dried, homemade cooked or raw. What matters is the finished product and the nutrients delivered. Many young families are extremely busy and their kids eat way to much unhealthy foods, mostly due to convenience. Statistically, I bet more American dogs and cats are getting closer to optimal nutrition than most kids. I have a special needs non verbal granddaughter who is fed thru a GTube. For 8 years she has eaten nothing but processed food from pouches. So even all processed food isn’t bad.

I feed my golden retriever puppy large breed Parina puppy, but she also really likes the Ollie wet food. Is it safe to at least mix these two if I do mainly the dry food and like a tablespoon of the wet food
I’m sure Glenn will chime in but professionals will tell you, if you keep the Ollie plus all other treats and extras to 10% or less of daily calories, that is ok. Any more and you are unbalancing the diet. And 10% is not a lot
Can you not mix dry and wet food for dogs? I do this everyday for my cats. They get dry food for breakfast and then wet cat food for dinner.

@@summerchapman8758 Oh you can do it that way too! I give my cats wet food for moisture as cats generally don’t drink enough water.
I do the same with farmers dog. Primary diet is royal canin and feed about 10percent daily in farmers dog. My dog just likes the wet/dry combo and it works for him. We also use Purina or hills canned foods from time to time
I’ve been feeding my mini schnauzer puppy half purina pro plan and half Ollie. After finding your channel I decided to stock up on pro plan and do half dry and half canned instead of the Ollie. I still have about a months left of Ollie and want to use it up first. How would you suggest making the transition and is this a good idea to do half dry half canned?
Also I know you are a nutrition channel but would you ever do a video on preventatives for flee/tick/heartworm? I see lots of people saying they are dangerous yet my vet swears by it.
I know for my pug, my vet discouraged me from using canned food because she said it is very bad for their teeth.

Research carried out by the University of Sussex in 2021 found that imidacloprid was found in 66% of UK freshwater samples, and another neonicotinoid, fipronil, was detected in 98% of samples. A Swiss study found that people who applied these chemicals to their pets showed traces of the chemical on their hands, up to 28 days after application.

12:27 - Champion Petfoods from Acana and Orijen is the most egregious for this practice. There is no difference between their adult dog foods and their senior dog foods. The only diffetence is the kibble shape and digestibility

13:26 - i believe Ed actually did the calculations what is optimal for all stages in the comment section of Dr. Amber Rea's channel. Its an extremely narrow set of parameters
18:37 - Corey Nutrition Company is very weird. They have guaranteed maximums on their Calcium and Phosphorus, whereas Purina and Royal Canin doesbt. Yet their 26/16 All-Stage food is supposedly for puupies, inactive adults and seniors. The only product formulated for adult maintenance is the Inukshuk 32/32. Yet the 30/25 is All-Life Stages as well.

You seem to be under the assumption that people don't research the company's and the actual nutritional needs of their dogs. Science Diet is like a drug that's pushed on pet owners. I recently had to put my dog on a diet by that company and yes it helped the issue he was having but now he has a whole different issue (he's allergic to ingredients in it and keeps chewing at his feet and licking like never before. 😢 Curious if you've watched the movie Pet Fooled? It's very informative.
@@lisal4623 the fact is most pet parents are influenced by catchy marketing and don’t really know what to look for. And most don’t know the nutritional needs of their pets. Researching on the internet is simply listening to all kinds of folks who have little training or knowledge. I’m not sure why you feel Science a diet is pushed line a drug. Because vets recommend it? Well they do feed it themselves very often and trust a company that can manage many diseases they see in their clinic. Sorry about your pup having allergy issues. Can’t really blame a food. You didn’t mention the diet but there’s usually alternatives. Yes, I watched Petfooled a few years back. As someone in the industry for 34 years it was hard to watch. But the problem with the documentary is they showed the worst horrible practices and then made it appear all companies operate that way. That’s like evaluating the worst Taco Bell and McDonald’s and then claiming all restaurants are like that, all the same. It was more sensational rather than educational. Thanks for writing!
Every time I eat blueberries I now laugh to myself, thinking about your videos and blueberries. lol Hey Glenn, my husband and I adopted another dog. We have a 12-week-old shih tzu pug puppy. My vet told me to put him on Science Diet Puppy food. =) She told me to stay away from all life stages for both my dogs. My 2 cats and 2 dogs are all on Science Diet.

No, feeding your dog a lot of treats is like McDonald’s. Feeding them nutritionally balanced food for their correct life stage is not. Processed does not immediately equal bad/unhealthy
Ironically, the ad that showed during this video was “Farmer’s Dog”. My 6 month old Belgian is thriving on Science diet. We just switched from regular puppy formula to large puppy formula (since he’s 56 pounds already) which has glucosamine in it for his joints. Love your channel and appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience.

If you need more proof listen to AnimalDocRea on here, she literally goes over the nationally analysis in front of your eyes for these fresh foods. It’s what made me stop considering this and go with hills. I’d rather give my dog 100% do what they need.

Once you said you were with Hills for 30 years you lost your credibility. Lawsuits against the company - the latest class action being largest in the industry against Hills for falsifying research - not to mention recalls and dead dogs and more. Your comments attacking “life stages food” is a joke coming from a Hills backround. This video is a sham. More dogs die from Hills then the companies that use human grade food. Many of us switched away from all the special Hills food and our dogs health improved. Your comments on protein and kidney issues has been challenged by good research. Dog food like Hills - full of carbohydrates and processed crap - is what is harmful for all animals.
Sharon, thanks for your comments. Obviously I hear them often on my channel. That’s why each of your points I have commented on in detail in my videos. I invite you to evaluate a different perspective. I try to do that. We are all trying to do what’s best for our beloved pets. We can agree on that.
