ok uncle sam
Fun fact i put secret triangles in my art for the faces because triangles are cool
Ok.
Are you ok? It seems like you fell at the end 😭
Ah. Thank you again, Sam! You're the best! ♥
You're also the best! Love your work
Ur like Sam's dad
Hi, you’re my favourite artist : )
God loves you God bless you
I LOVE YOUR SCOTT AND YOUR ART YOU’RE AWESOME! YOURMY FAC ARTIST (sorry Sam ur great too)
I'm surprised that after all the roasting our art and rating art tips you still have sanity to lose in this video
Maybe the time every roasting art tips he regains said sanity, and looses it for a video.

yes.
Ok
Agreed we should cal him uncle 😂
anyone else think sam is basically like the twoset violin of the art community
lmao yes
i hope not. the two of them used to be passionate violinists. they wanted to show the world the beauty of classical music and their beloved violin. even the dark side was a topic. now they're just two clowns with violins who just laugh at others too often.
That would be like Sam stopping drawing, no longer giving tips, making unsolicited jokes about us, and performing little skits.

LMAO im a musician and an artist i watch them both and i agree samdoesarts is two set violin for art maybe sam is their uncle
except he is oneset violin LOL
1:39 usually in anime one of the animators will fill in with yellow and blue where the lighting and shading will go to save time for the painter when it gets to them! that way they know where the lighting will be without having to guess or think too much about placement on a busy schedule and makes the whole product more cohesive in the end!
this person seems to be cutting an extra corner and going straight in with the colours they want the shading to be, instead of just focusing on the placement :-)
heard that replying can boost a comment, here goes
this is very informative, thanks :D
(( for anyone looking to try this in their own art, just a heads up that this works best with cell shading! have fun ^^ ))
@@thelocalshoop thank you for wanting to boost it!
@@anapple6912 this is true! i think it really comes down to personal preference and how you've learned to shade, honestly. Some people would probably struggle with this method of shading if they don't have their colours down first while others excel at it.
boost?
Thank you for this, my dream job is an animator and this will be really helpful for my future studies, so thank you. ☺️

I am really enjoying the Sam x Scott friendship era. Scott did a very good painting of Sam in one of his videos.
4:29 Something people need to understand is that ART IS A LUXURY.
My school held this event and there was an art gallery where people could buy art made by students. At first i was going to charge around $5 for the pieces i made (Price is converted from IDR) I then found out the school already set prices for all pieces depending on the medium and digital was $10 each. I first thought that was way too high, until my friend who said he would buy it for $5 decided to buy two pieces for $20.
tl;dr If someone wants to buy art THEY HAVE the money to spend.
This is such a good point!!! I've always advocated for higher prices on commissions because young/new artists rarely value their time and skill enough, but this is a good point to add to that argument in the future. ❤
So you want to say that people must be rich to buy any art??
@@ngalethithieu4080 It's more like rich people tend to be the people to buy are. Poor people do not have the money to pay the higher prices (and often not even the lower ones) so they are rarer buyers anyways. Also rich people often want to brag. They are socially conditioned to want that. And showing of art you bought is a way of bragging.
So: Less opportunity for poor people, more use for rich people --> More rich people buy art.
@@ngalethithieu4080 if the art is commission/original and/or the actual physical piece (for traditional) - YES, you need to have spare money. like the OP said, art is a luxury, not a necessity
you can get art prints for cheap maybe but NOT the work that took probably dozens of hours to create either specifically for you or the one and only piece
I was just thinking earlier today that I wished Sam would make a video where he compiles his highest rated/ favourite art tips he's found so far from this series (all platforms)

@@RandomGirl785 whoops
Oh and as for 1:36-
Most animation studios will draw in the key shadows ( and highlights! ) with the line-art. You've probably seen the keyframes where they'll use colors like red, yellow, green, blue.

Sam protecting the beginner artist is all I want to be as a person !
Yes, the shading technique can DEFINITELY be helpful. Not sure if it's just a manga thing, or if it's universal, but often, shading can get confusing with colour, especially if it's already a struggle area, because you get distracted by the tone, and you can't tell if your issue is the shading being wrong or the colour not working or there being too much or too little shadow. I use it sometimes, but not always, as I find it takes longer but gets a better result.
Challenge: Do you think you could create a character, whatever character you want. Then redraw the character but color it using the contrary/opposite colors of the original and still make it look nice🤷🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
I honestly would like to see you try🫣🫣
such a good ideaaaa
whoa that'd be trippy i wanna do that
@@_celeste6930 😁
@@spam-el3ee 👍🏾😊👍🏾
That'd be cool!😊
I've seen a lot of cell animation WIPs with shadows and highlights only, before they do any coloring, so I think it's a common practice.
3:15 Ik exactly what she means! Lots of artists use the bucket tool to color their drawings and then clip stuff onto that and add shadows. However, when you bucket the lineart in the first place, you might miss spots like in small corners. Then, when you're done, you'll notice blank spots in the art.
Pov: binge watching Sam while doing an art piece for hours on end
"dynamic learning"
Frrr, I've spent days on this one piece and I still haven't gotten the sketch down T^T I can't do body proportions & perspective
DAMN SAME!
12:27 external diameter of the hips doesn't affect the childbirth. You can have enormous looking hips, but the actual exit would be so narrow, that baby would not be able to pop out and vice versa
1:45 yes its common, or has verity, i saw some korean artist use it while drawing
Sam put here guiding all of us art babies through the minefield of TikTok art tips 😔🥰
This boxes shaming has to stop 😤They are great when you're learning perspective even for characters. If you draw only cercles for the hips or torso, you probably gonna end up with a flat shape with no side part. It's ok to boxify your bodies as long as you curve those shapes when you understand how it work (I understand why you say that but I think its important to say they can be really useful when you start learning, I was struggling hard with egg shapes bc I haven't learned 3d shape before that)
11:35 so, I think that here, it’s not rude unless they say to not ask for changes, and if their minor and it’s only in the sketch phase, I think it’s fine. I always send them my sketch and ask if anything should be changed but after sketch it’s too late and then it’s rude
10:00 Sam really IS Canadian💀that came out of him so easily LOL I love it
ALSO THANK YOU SAM FOR YOUR HUMOR AND ART TIPS 🫶🏻
5:04 also about the pricing thing, the people who want good art are willing to pay a lot for it, and the people who want cheap art will probably pay waaay less than your lowest rate. If you price it low the high paying ones will assume your art is low quality, and the low paying ones will still think it is too expensive unless you basically give them art for free. So neither group will choose you.
We should appreciate the fact that Sam subjects himself to TikTok art tips on a regular basis for our viewership.
The grey layer as a clipping mask, to check if you've left any empty space, is something I do, though I often instead use a bright color that doesn't show up anywhere else in the drawing to make it more obvious.
12:45 HIS REACTION IAM CRYING
Thank you for boosting my self-esteem- This sounds so sappy but I've actually been feeling terrible so thank you for that chaotic but sweet intro ^^'
shadows before base colors is actually a pretty good tip (at least if you use layer modes for shading). It lets you focus on where the light will hit and all that good stuff before worrying about colors, kind of similar to doing a black and white painting underneath and then adding your colors using layer modes
yesss ty samm honestly my art style has really built since I started watching you ty

0:15 to 0:30 is just Dunning-Kruger Efect. I love it
I think (maybe) you're underestimating the use of rectangles and boxes. I understand it's not for everyone's style (and might be more suited to draw male characters rather than female characters). I can say that when I stopped using circles for my sketches, and switched to only using rectangles and straight lines, everything about my art improved. Especially with regards to drawing realistic portraits. Anyways - thank you for another fun video! :D
fr boy, you are wholesome! just watching your intros is making smile every time

Bro this is the earliest ive been in one of your vids sam
i think the left eye first thing is actually pretty good, because sometimes your tempo or how you think when you draw isn't flexible enough to draw both of them at the same time. or learn idk
3:03 - 3:25 I also set that layer as a color to complement the lighting I’m using and when I’m done with the base colors I like to lower the opacity a bit to make the colors look more harmonious and fit the lighting better. Hope this helps ❤
I love these plz.upload them more often they rlyy helpful

When it comes to eyes honestly I always remind myself that eyes don't look exactly the same, and I always make my eyes slightly round or round depending on what kind of character I'm drawing, even if the character has more rectangular eyes, they'll still have slight roundness to them
6:41 OH I LOVE THIS GUY! He's so wholesome!
Sam’s face throughout the entire video: *what did I just watch?, I regret this so much*
You’re so funny! Love your gentle roasts and encouragement!
About shading on a white layer, it's not something everyone into anime does and I wouldn't do it on the same white color as the background lol even with a clipping mask. For me, it's so I don't get distracted by the getting the colors right and just focus on their placement. It's pretty good for ADHD brain, but it does involve quite a bit of color correction after
Lmao sam couldn't deal w the awkwardness in the outro
1:36 Anime has different ways of coloring and shading, the most popular one is doing multiple shading layers AFTER the coloring ofc. As for this one, I think it's because the shadows aren't related to the base colors

Nah but these intros are slowly giving me more and more anxiety, Sam got me checking myself like a madman 💀
So trippy seeing my own tiktok video in one of your videos and in the thumbnail (the grass one)...Can't believe you gave it a 7 /10. I was expecting you to roast the hell out of it 😅
the eye tip at 8:00 actually made more sense than the 1/10 you gave it.
if you're freehand drawing on paper and righthanded, draw from left to right, that way you'll be able to compare your new lines with the old without blocking your reference with your hand.
That 1 outta 10 was a bit harsh. I think the concept of drawing right eye first because right handed and it isnt blocked is a pretty mind blowing realization for me.
that compliment at the beginning 🥺😳
Look Sam, first video, not for just anime, when drawing realistic and complex lighting, getting rid of the colours makes it easier to focus on everything else, ambient light, direct light, subsurface scattering, highlights, ambient occlusion, and using these in a blending layer, means you can add the colours after so the lighting will go right on top. I hope that made sense, I don’t use it that much but my favourite artist CZcamsr, Challa, uses it occasionally and when he does, the artworks he makes turns out spectacular.
Sam is a good conversationalist. he asked how your day was more than 5 times...

shadows before base is sometimes used in miniature painting (like Warhammer and such) to keep the shadow value using a zenithal highlight so you dont have to put as much effort into the shading in the color layers
I love how he says “great video” and then gives a 3/10 with no explanation 😂
3:20 they mean that if you accidentally left some pixels uncolored, those pixels will be grey (or whatever other base color you chose) instead of transparent, so theres no gaps or holes, i use this tip too, its always good to have a base color for your drawings
Hello there same,I am very thankful for your help even though I'm a paleoartist and barely draw humans u have still helped me a lot.
As someone who draws anime. Yes, we do shade before coloring but if the shadings bad we fix it
The thing with shadows before color is getting the light source right without distracting with details, I like rendering with values only and then apply colors on a diferent layer
Before coloring in anything, when animating, the shadows and highlights are often decided on directly on top of the sketch/line art then looked over to make sure theyre correct and then finally everythings colored in, so that tip wasnt wrong, and honestly isnt that bad anyway since having a ton of color can be distracting when trying to do shading and highlights for some, so its a solid tip imo
Dude why are kooleen and sam so in sink these days like literally i get notifications of them at the same time....😅😅
And 6:04 i love there rivalary nicknames😂😂
I know ONE pro artist who had no problem using the short sketch lines, when drawing.
His name, was *Neal Adams!*
That first one was actually pretty funny and I liked their art style more than 90% of the other ones in this video. So many "good" artists just draw in a realistic style and it's so boring. I'll take something expressive and stylistic over something that could just be a photograph any day.
I feel bad for sam’s brain cells. They don’t deserve this.

3:38 i kinda wish i knew that 2 years ago before i discovered the lasso select tool having to trace the place i want to work on is pure pain idk how i endured it that long but thats what i get for not wanting to watch tutorials
I draw triangles instead of rectangles for the eyes. It helps that triangles are something I constantly have to draw for my comic.
