Thank you, Megan. I've heard of landrace gardening but never really knew what it was. I love the idea of letting plants cross-pollinate to get something that does well locally. Of course, you have to let the plants seed out, and many gardeners don't like to do that. Will definitely check out that website to learn more.

Birdhouse gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) does NOT cross pollinate with typical squashes or with "ornamental gourds" (which are usually Cucurbita pepo sold as ornamental squashes). But the cucurbita pepo ornamental gourds WILL cross with summer and winter squashes like zucchinis, patty pan squashes, spaghetti squash, etc.
The 'crafting' ornamental 'true' gourds (like the ones you make bottles, vases, etc. from) are Lagenaria siceraria just like birdhouse gourd. Other Lagenaria siceraria gourds, like "Cucuzzi" are tasty and edible. The words "gourd" and "squash" are often used interchangeably by people so look to the latin genus/species names instead.

It is good to support those that are protecting the heirloom varieties but there's issue's in doing that for some people.
Heirloom varieties were developed when human population was much much smaller and all crops were grown in areas with ideal growing conditions.
Heirloom varieties were developed for traditional, unsustainable growing practices.
Because of these, if one grows in a non traditional growing area, finding the genetics that will do well is difficult at best. Enter seed saving and landrace gardening. Blend everything together and develop your own varieties!

Very fun. I didn’t know about poisonous gourds making my other squash poisonous if cross pollinated 😳

It w9nt affect the fruits this year...only if you save the seeds and plant them next year...then the resulting crops might be mixed

I often think things and you say it; like, I leave two plants if they come up and you said you didn't cut it if there were two 😂 Then I said she just planted a 3 sisters set up. Guess what, you said it too. 😂😂

What kind of shade cloth do you use? I bought some at Lowe’s and I think it is too shady. I’m wondering if I need to order some from a garden store. Interesting topic this type of gardening.

I ordered mine online from growers solutions because you can't get custom cuts from the store....but typical percentage for our area is 30-40%. I use 40 and that's pretty decent. Some people use 50% but unless you live in a really exposed place it's a little much.
30% is too little for my property...with all the wind and no shade I have in my garden
