I am originally from Windsor, now a teacher in Toronto and a friend of the Trombleys. I once drove Rosalie home to Windsor and she regaled me with rock and roll stories. She led an incredible life.
That is awesome! This was also back in the day when the DJs were almost put in high regard as the artists. When they could make or break a band. My favorite, of course, Rosalie play Eighteen by Alice Cooper because her son liked it. No one was playing them and CKLW broke them! With Alice Cooper being one of my all time favorites, I will be forever grateful to Rosalie Trombley.
Back when Seger was young and hungry, he had that incredible angst in his voice. You can just feel that tough , Detroit grit! I'm Detroiter through and through.
Let's be straight!!...That's Rosalie Trombley from Leamington, Ontario, Canada. Thanks Bob for the tribute to the young and beautiful superstar, from our little town.
She was WAY ahead of her time, too. Single mom, raising I believe 3 kids, and was the music director for CKLW. She had complete control over what got on the air. It was SHE who booked a very young Elton John because she though he had talent.
I was just in Windsor for the Big 8 Reunion and the statue dedication. What a fantastic weekend! Windsor gave a great honor to the Leamington "Girl With The Golden Ear". I said my goodbyes to Rosalie on her birthday at the statue last week.

CKLW in Detroit was a national powerhouse radio station. Bob Seger thought he'd get on music director Rosalie Trombley's good side by recording "Rosalie", hoping that CKLW would start playing it. Rosalie refused to add the song to the Big 8's play list and threatened to quit if anyone added it over her head. The lyrics spoke of the enormous reach of CKLW ('..she's got the power, she's got the tower", "..from 'Chattanooga' to good old 'Booga Loosa' you can hear her fine").
I came here because of Thin Lizzy (today is St Pat's day) and I didn't know this wasn't a Lizzy original, until I saw the live version and Phil says this is a Seger song. So I thought I'd check it out. It's ok, but this is going to be added to my list of songs that topped the original.
Nothing like the ol' clear channel AM rock stations! We used to be able to listen to CKLW late at nite in Philly! This was important because it was before consultants created Boss Radio, and there were actually "regional" hits. Cool songs were a hit in Detroit that we never got in Philly, but I didn't miss out on them! BB
Byker Bob Wow, you got CKLW all the way to Philly? That's awesome considering it originated in Windsor, Ont. I grew up in Detroit and CKLW was stuck on all the radios everywhere you went.
@@DetVen apparently directionally it could reach northern Scandinavia communities back in the day. I'm in Ottawa, but I can get the NY AM big watt signals in my car at night. Rosalie Trombley was music director at CKLW Windsor-Detroit 'The Big 8'. From the mid-60s to the mid-70s it was the #1 radio station, not just in Windsor-Detroit, but in Cleveland, Toledo, etc. and could be heard reportedly as far away as Scandinavia to the north, Iowa to the west and Toronto to the east. Rosalie playing your single could literally make a single a huge hit. She wouldn't play Seger's songs, so he wrote this in either protest or for Bob to beg Rosalie to play his songs.
This song was never played on CKLW because Rosalie said she would quit if it ever was.... but it was played on WRIF and some of the other Motor City FM rock stations

I didn't know that. As a teenager living in Detroit at the time, I had no idea girls could be in the music business, much less have that kind of influence. Indeed. You go north to enter the United States at Windsor. I've crossed many times there to visit my American relatives in metro Detroit. :-) I think there's only one or two other crossings, (I think between Yukon and Alaska is one of them) where you go north to enter the States.
So, I heard Black Star Riders do this song in NYC a few weeks ago (solid rock band, look them up). I thought it was a Thin Lizzy cover. I mentioned how cool it was to hear them do Thin Lizzy covers to their lead singer (Ricky Warwick). He told me this was a Seger cover. I learned something.

They are the same guys that are currently touring as Thin Lizzy now (and yes, there is a touring Thin Lizzy. They're doing some festivals in Europe this summer). They released their new material as Black Star Riders out of respect for Phil. It had nothing to do with legal reasons, which makes it even cooler that they aren't using the Thin Lizzy name for their new stuff.
I was aware this was a Bob Seger song years ago but never heard it until now. Like most I am very familiar with Lizzy's version (huge Thin Lizzy fan here). I was never a big fan of this song in general but recently I've become a fan of Bob Seger, who I think is an American treasure. I like Bob's version. Lizzy's is not "better" just faster. Although I do love the live version Lizzy with Cowgirl Song which was a medley of Cowboy Song and Rosalie.
Funny. I've never heard the Thin Lizzie version. But I'm from Detroit and well remember it on the radio. ( CKLW, see song Rosalie, also from this album).
I know the feeling. 😊 But there are a few others. The Yellow Rose of Texas gives a brief mention. And there's an old one 'Rosalie, My Darling'. By Bing Crosby
