- The first coronavirus patient arrived at St. John’s hospital in Far Rockaway in March. During the peak, the morgue was averaging 17 to 18 bodies a day. Now, there is an uneasy lull and the staff fears a second wave will come.

Hey there! I'm the cinematographer and editor of this video. Many of you pointed out that Siobhan's badge was different. I understand the confusion, thank you for raising it. Siobhan told us she forgot her badge at home that day. She borrowed a colleague's badge until she went home in the afternoon to grab hers. I hope this clarifies, and thanks for watching the video.
Thank you x

I was a 2nd year resident in this hospital at that time. It was worse than what it appeared in this video. It was more like a war zone where the ER was literally filled with beds even the hallways as the ICU and the adjacent pediatric ward turned into additional ICU were under full capacity for days to weeks, only being available when patients die, which majority of COVID patients did. I wish the video captured a more realistic picture of what was happening. It may have been to protect patients’ privacy.

These people deserve a huge award for this...they’re risking their lives just to save us and the people in hospitals
I agree. My wife is an ER nurse here in WA State(King County). They do not get enough credit for what they do - day in and day out. They literally put their lives on the line each time they clock in for work. They get no incentive for doing so, but they do so because they've committed themselves to caring for those in health needs.
I felt terrible for the ones who loss their loved ones, especially when I learn at the end of the video that the doctor’s dad passed away. It’s like you have been trained to saved people’s life and you did saved many lives but you couldn’t save your loved ones. It was overwhelming just to watch the video and I couldn’t imagine the feelings they have to face everyday when they are actual experiencing it. Wishes everyone stay healthy and heathy and healthy!
This was hard to watch, really really hard, but I felt like I had to. Thank you to all of our more-than-essential medical workers who have put their lives on the line these past few months to save people. Thank you for trying your hardest. Thank you.

Same. My mom is an RN and she only has one more year until she graduates to being a doctor and she always risks her life into going into her patients houses and I every time I pray I hope that god protects her and one time one of her patients were getting tested for the coronavirus and thank god they didn’t get tested positive for the test. I am truly sorry for those who went through a hard time with losing their family members and not being able to be with them during this hard time and not being able to have a funeral for them. My great grandpa died before the pandemic and I am sad but also blessed because if he would’ve passed during this pandemic, I wouldn’t be able to see him and I really never seen him before and I only met him when I was born and I felt guilty for not really spending time with him in the hospital but I am glad he is in a better place now and I got to go to his funeral. 🙏🏽❤️
Black Light That is disrespectful. People risk lives for you and you treat them like that. Your so ungrateful and my mom is an RN and she still risks her life into going into patients homes to help them and it is really sad how you don’t care about those who lost their lives for you just so you can live a better life. You are such a disgusting person and I wish an apology from you.

I can't imagine putting my fear and emotional wellbeing to the side in order to help the general public like this. The hospital staff were heroes before the crisis but now... I don't even have the words to praise these amazing people.
If you're not the 80% who die being from a nursing home, or the other considered elderly or with a preexisting condition, such as a heart or lung issue in which over 1,000,000 individuals die annually in the United States, you're fine. 100,000 dead in 2 months seems on par. Red pill or Blue. Coronavirus is nothing put a political attempt to temporarily halt the U.S. economy, slow GDP growth, and increase unemployment to help elect Biden. It's election season, and both parties understand how the majority votes. The state of the economy.
Micheal Ellis whats the big deal! They could quit when ever they want. They watch people live and watch people die. We are safe because of what they are doing.
Training overcomes panic/fear. Like practicing football day after day, when game day comes, you don't look at the other team with fear and collapse in a panic, you rush, you get hurt, you get back up until you're done. This is human nature, we've been training to overcome panic since we've been throwing spears at furs and wrestling with our brothers to prepare for hunting a bear or a mammoth.

Our neighbor’s 32 year old nephew (and new dad of a 4 week old) died there in late April. We lost 3 family members in Mt. Sinai Queens and Elmhurst hospitals. LIC/Astoria, Corona, Flushing, and SE Queens have been very hard hit. We are both sad and yet frozen/shocked at the same time. Staying positive for our children. We have 5 and lockdown has been so tough for them. The nurses, aides, and even one cleaning woman from our country would take pics for us and text them so at least we could see them. We were not allowed to visit but had 2 FaceTime calls while they were conscious so we could say I love you for the last time. I can’t believe their kindness towards us. They were so overwhelmed and yet took the time to text us on their commutes home.

No! Susan’s hair stylist needs to feed her family and the waitress at the restaurant likewise. Not selfish, life.
Watching this is a good reminder to curb my whining about the conveniences I am missing.
Jenny Oliveira The world kind of works on you wanting your conveniences. The people who provide those conveniences rely on you to be able to provide for their families. The sooner people realize the pieces of this that are exaggerated, dramatized and really could not be controlled no matter how much we lock things down the sooner we get back to living our lives. The virus is real, so is the flu, so is TB, AIDS and hundreds or thousands of other diseases and plagues mankind has experienced (without imprisoning the masses). It’s a virus, it will run its course. Ruining our children and grandchildren’s future is senseless. Most of us would of never heard anything about this and gone about our lives were it not for over reactive and controlling politicians and their propaganda machine. Large numbers of people die in similar numbers with some frequency all the time. Do we ever really hear about it?

A fourth of A cup of vinegar should be placed in every room. Change daily...
You want to really know why the death count is so high in New York, Governor Cuomo ordered the return to nursing homes of sick elderly patients instead of treating them in hospitals. The infected patients thus infect the rest of the vulnerable population in the home and you have mass death. This is how New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania is clearing out it's nursing home/Medicaide population. The area hospitals were not overwhelmed, in fact the Hospital ship that the president sent to NYC was so under used that it started taking patients from New Jersey and it still wasn't even at half capacity. Seen all those videos with nurses, doctors, interns dancing, they're not doing that because they're callus, they're just board and wanted something fun to do.
@@jdriver1419 if this is true as you say It is, by all means put it out there!
We need to see it. I know there are some like this in every vocation but I would like to believe most nurses do what they do because they are dedicated to helping others and can be vastly under appreciated.
@T M Vinegar does disinfect the air to some degree. It also releases negative ions into the air. Of course air currents inside rooms affect the how well this works.
A long bath with A cup of vinegar in it, does A better job. Don't use soap or shampoo during the bath!
DOWN WITH CUOMO!! We don't need a virus to harm thousands of the real people who are affected by this, not the average Joe! Cuomo needs to know who is really being affected by this disease.

Hi everyone - I’m Kassie and I helped report and produce the video. As a kid, I spent my summers at my grandmother’s house in Rockaway - still have family there. When Covid-19 hit, I wondered how the area would fare with only one hospital on the peninsula - St. John’s Hospital. Doctors there had identified the first Covid-19 patient in Queens in early March, and the hospital was overwhelmed with cases for weeks. In late April, the hospital allowed our cameras in to document their staff at work. Cases were declining, and the staff members were able to take a breath and to start to deal with the emotional toll of the pandemic, which they did quite candidly with us. Co-producer Emily Rhyne and I are here to answer any questions you may have about the piece. Thanks.

HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT?
It’s all BS
Kassie, well done.
This report reminds me of the difficulty and challenges Rockaway and all of New York faced during Hurricane Sandy.
I hope everyone gets the option to get mental health counseling, including your NYT team assigned to this story. There is strong evidence PSTD care must be part of the treatment process, for all healthcare teams or we will see additional casualties directly attributable to the pandemic.
It should be noted, the exact same crisis, velocity of casualties and outcomes is occurring in Italy, England, Spain and soon, Brazil.
The novel coronavirus knows no boundaries and does not discriminate who it can take.

I wonder how many of those deaths were none covid related and still classified as such. Do u have those numbers? 🤔
I don’t care what side of politics you are on we need to take care of the doctors and nurses, their will be a spike in suicide from healthcare workers. We need to be here for them just like veterans, they are experiencing mass level of death which will probably cause some forms of PTSD
Yeah, it's very depressing what's going on.. I can't imagine the mental anguish these people are going through on a daily basis. I'm a very emotional person, and I personally wouldn't be able to handle having any patient passing away.. Especially children.
Absolutely.
Thanks for posting this video...
Now I know what real heros are. You can't help but cry watching this,to see what each and everyone of these workers are dealing with every single day. It really opens ur eyes to the magnitude of COVID. All these people on the front lines of every hospital deserve to be compensated in every way by their communities and the State and government. Especially the doctor who is trying to deal with his own dads illness while valiantly fighting for the lives of all his patients and his way of showing compassion for everyone...not just the patient
I feel like where society messed up was just showing recovery stories, and good news. Instead of showing the heart breaking reality in hospitals. Because now it seems like no one wants to believe how bad it can get.
@Rickey H. The uncomfortable truth is that roughly 7,500 Americans die every day, before this pandemic. 675,000+ in 3 months. Reality can be brutal sometimes. But I wouldn't be surprised if with so few people driving, robbing & murdering each other the overall death rate in America is lower now that the virus is here.
Actually society has it right since recovery stories are the real norm with the virus. Deaths are the outlier statistically.
@@ericw9702 the question your trying to get at is: are we are ok allowing almost all of our grandparents to die early and cruelly to keep the status quo?
@@coryz.872 no, that is not the question. The sick and elderly can shelter themselves and let the rest of us get back to life, they will be no more affected than they are now.
If people did see this maybe they wouldn't be so quick to get back to bars and movie theaters
The doctor seems very kind-hearted
Yeah he does
My home town and it's so hard to believe that this has happened ... My first child was born there and I'm getting goose bumps just hearing the pain and hurt from everyone working at St John's ... Far Rockaway was so much fun growing up there ... I live in Virginia but the Rock is always gonna be home to me ... As I write this I'm holding back the tear's and from a distance I feel there pain ... May God bless you all ... One Love ....
You've got me crying at work...
I'm going to turn to this video every time I start to feel quarantine fatigue. I hope everyone does there part to flatten the curve and keep it down.
I wish America had this mindset. People are so eager to leave their homes to the point where people are protesting. I wish more people can see this video and stay home!
And I'm going to live my life not in fear. God Bless Texas for opening up
We should be careful, but we can't just stay under lockdown. We've got mouths to feed. If Walmart can have crowds of people fighting over tp, I don't see why society at large can't operate. I still think we should open with caution and practice appropriate safety, but the whole world cannot stop.
Patricia Louis - if you’re young you’re more likely to die of the flu. Over half of everyone who’s died from this in America were from retirement homes, and mostly in New York because of andrew cuomo’s awful retirement home policies.
@@royrogers3133 I'm in NJ right next door and things are bad here. I just feel like this virus has everyone on edge because everything is just so uncertain. I just pray for mercy for the whole entire world and our essential workers.
It just looks so sad how I’m seeing all these dead people stacked on top of each other because there’s just too many people dying at the same time :(
Nat Thebrave atleast it ain’t like being left in a Vietnam forest forgotten and never seen again ;(
That's all a lie. Research please. Turn off tv, find alternative civilian news. Or don't believe until you see it, or a trusted friend sees it.
I live in Texas and my city is behind in cases. As we reopen I'm staying home as much as possible because it isnt safe yet. It might not be for awhile.
Very good stay safe dont go out
My heart goes out to the Doctor that last his Dad .
“Please... give us increased pay to all of the medical and essential workers out there...”
“WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE MEDICAL AND ESSENTIAL WORKERS FKR WHAT THEY ARE DOING RIGHT NOW”
Medical workers are getting increased pay.
thank them by staying inside and staying safe
What is xtra money going to do for you? Revive the dead ? Be satisfied with what you got, good health. Dont think with greed .
Eman namE if they get paid more their living chances are going to be higher, therefore more health workers/essential workers will be able to do more work and help us all
They are they are getting a $12hr hazard pay raise
Thank you everyone for this. This video was so full of sadness and love. I appreciate all the hard work that these people do. I can't imagine. I commend these workers more than words can say. I love them so much. Wish I could hug them. Thank you, thank you for making this video.
dear doctors in every city and country , i just wanted to say a big thank you
At least they used actual body bags, the last cadaver photo op really screwed it up.
I live next to the hospital and this absolutely breaks my heart.. RIP to all who passed and may the staff continue to be the heroes they are..God bless 🙏
stay safe!!!!
Dont open ur windows and doors only stay inside as much as u can
God bless you guys! I’m an aspiring PA and my heart felt prayers to everyone in New York and the whole of the US, we got to do better and we have to show some empathy and humility whether we are at the forefront or just watching this video from the safety of our homes. We got to stand United ...
Thank you for making this....
I'm from Far Rockaway, my kids were born at St John's This is so overwhelming
Wow. I have so much respect for these guys They should be the ones earning athlete salaries.
This is so sad. These healthcare workers need the best equipment to help with their daily work and their health. Dr. Lee, our prayers are with you and your family.
Plandemic.
Hopefully after this ends, it will change how healthcare workers are equipped with equipment around the world
This is really sad may they Rest In Peace and thank you 🙏 to the doctors and nurses who help
This is so heartbreaking for everyone! 😭
Those guys are freaking heros and deserve to wear crowns when this is all over

This video is breaking my heart
Thought I would give a quick breakdown of this film.
2:29 60 patients intubated.
2:30 Many of the patients were elderly
2:38 This took place before the mandated DNR
3:15 They understood the low chance of success ventilators offered, a slim chance was still better than no chance at all.
3:21 They were following all procedures and caring for dozens of intubated patients every day.
4:18 An alert patient presented to the hospital with;
4:25 low oxygen saturation levels. Alert + Low O2 Sat is not normal.
4:37 By this point she had seen so many of these patients die she knew this woman would die, even though she followed protocol.
4:43 It is strangely ironic that the woman's insurance card is mentioned here. It truly did not matter what level of insurance they had at that point. Everyone received the best the hospital could offer.
5:16 Imagine being that doctor. Imagine if it was your dad struck down by a mysterious illness.
5:35 He intervened at an early stage in the progression of his fathers illness.
5:40 His father received the same treatment as all of his patients, his very best. Intubation and ventilation.
5:43 His father was on the ventilator for 4 weeks.
5:53 He was left wrestling with decisions no son should have to make.
11:29 A second wave is predicted.
12:07 He wants to make sure this never happens again. We still have time to prepare. Arm yourself with knowledge.
12:19 Far Rockaway has the second highest death rate from this event in New York City. We need to ask ourselves why.
The doctors and nurses handling these patients have suffered greatly. I don't believe they failed in their duty, even though I am certain many of them battle thoughts of self-incrimination. This could be considered a failing of the medical system, but not of the medical workers. Since this first wave, we have learned some of what works and what doesn't work in helping people with these strange symptoms.
