Hey there! I'm the cinematographer and editor of this video. Many of you pointed out that Siobhan's badge was different. I understand the confusion, thank you for raising it. Siobhan told us she forgot her badge at home that day. She borrowed a colleague's badge until she went home in the afternoon to grab hers. I hope this clarifies, and thanks for watching the video.

It was more like a war zone where the ER was literally filled with beds even the hallways as the ICU and the adjacent pediatric ward turned into additional ICU were under full capacity for days to weeks, only being available when patients die, which majority of COVID patients did. If you're not the 80% who die being from a nursing home, or the other considered elderly or with a preexisting condition, such as a heart or lung issue in which over 1,000,000 individuals die annually in the United States, you're fine. 100,000 dead in 2 months seems on par. Red pill or Blue. Coronavirus is nothing put a political attempt to temporarily halt the U.S. economy, slow GDP growth, and increase unemployment to help elect Biden. It's election season, and both parties understand how the majority votes. The state of the economy.

Training overcomes panic/fear. Like practicing football day after day, when game day comes, you don't look at the other team with fear and collapse in a panic, you rush, you get hurt, you get back up until you're done. This is human nature, we've been training to overcome panic since we've been throwing spears at furs and wrestling with our brothers to prepare for hunting a bear or a mammoth.

LIC/Astoria, Corona, Flushing, and SE Queens have been very hard hit. We are both sad and yet frozen/shocked at the same time. Staying positive for our children. We have 5 and lockdown has been so tough for them. The nurses, aides, and even one cleaning woman from our country would take pics for us and text them so at least we could see them. We were not allowed to visit but had 2 FaceTime calls while they were conscious so we could say I love you for the last time. I can’t believe their kindness towards us. The sooner people realize the pieces of this that are exaggerated, dramatized and really could not be controlled no matter how much we lock things down the sooner we get back to living our lives. The virus is real, so is the flu, so is TB, AIDS and hundreds or thousands of other diseases and plagues mankind has experienced (without imprisoning the masses). It’s a virus, it will run its course. Ruining our children and grandchildren’s future is senseless. Most of us would of never heard anything about this and gone about our lives were it not for over reactive and controlling politicians and their propaganda machine. Large numbers of people die in similar numbers with some frequency all the time. Do we ever really hear about it?

You want to really know why the death count is so high in New York, Governor Cuomo ordered the return to nursing homes of sick elderly patients instead of treating them in hospitals. The infected patients thus infect the rest of the vulnerable population in the home and you have mass death. This is how New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania is clearing out it's nursing home/Medicaide population. The area hospitals were not overwhelmed, in fact the Hospital ship that the president sent to NYC was so under used that it started taking patients from New Jersey and it still wasn't even at half capacity. Seen all those videos with nurses, doctors, interns dancing, they're not doing that because they're callus, they're just board and wanted something fun to do.

Hi everyone - I’m Kassie and I helped report and produce the video. As a kid, I spent my summers at my grandmother’s house in Rockaway - still have family there. When Covid-19 hit, I wondered how the area would fare with only one hospital on the peninsula - St. John’s Hospital. Doctors there had identified the first Covid-19 patient in Queens in early March, and the hospital was overwhelmed with cases for weeks. In late April, the hospital allowed our cameras in to document their staff at work. Cases were declining, and the staff members were able to take a breath and to start to deal with the emotional toll of the pandemic, which they did quite candidly with us. Co-producer Emily Rhyne and I are here to answer any questions you may have about the piece. Thanks.

This report reminds me of the difficulty and challenges Rockaway and all of New York faced during Hurricane Sandy.
I hope everyone gets the option to get mental health counseling, including your NYT team assigned to this story. There is strong evidence PSTD care must be part of the treatment process, for all healthcare teams or we will see additional casualties directly attributable to the pandemic.
It should be noted, the exact same crisis, velocity of casualties and outcomes is occurring in Italy, England, Spain and soon, Brazil.

It really opens ur eyes to the magnitude of COVID. All these people on the front lines of every hospital deserve to be compensated in every way by their communities and the State and government. Especially the doctor who is trying to deal with his own dads illness while valiantly fighting for the lives of all his patients and his way of showing compassion for everyone...not just the patient

@Rickey H. The uncomfortable truth is that roughly 7,500 Americans die every day, before this pandemic. 675,000+ in 3 months. Reality can be brutal sometimes. But I wouldn't be surprised if with so few people driving, robbing & murdering each other the overall death rate in America is lower now that the virus is here.

Thought I would give a quick breakdown of this film.
    2:29 60 patients intubated.
2:30 Many of the patients were elderly
2:38 This took place before the mandated DNR
3:15 They understood the low chance of success ventilators offered, a slim chance was still better than no chance at all.
3:21 They were following all procedures and caring for dozens of intubated patients every day.
    4:18 An alert patient presented to the hospital with;
4:25 low oxygen saturation levels. Alert + Low O2 Sat is not normal.
4:37 By this point she had seen so many of these patients die she knew this woman would die, even though she followed protocol.
4:43 It is strangely ironic that the woman's insurance card is mentioned here. It truly did not matter what level of insurance they had at that point. Everyone received the best the hospital could offer.
5:16 Imagine being that doctor. Imagine if it was your dad struck down by a mysterious illness.
5:35 He intervened at an early stage in the progression of his fathers illness.
5:40 His father received the same treatment as all of his patients, his very best. Intubation and ventilation.
5:43 His father was on the ventilator for 4 weeks.
5:53 He was left wrestling with decisions no son should have to make.
11:29 A second wave is predicted.
12:07 He wants to make sure this never happens again. We still have time to prepare. Arm yourself with knowledge.
12:19 Far Rockaway has the second highest death rate from this event in New York City. We need to ask ourselves why.
The doctors and nurses handling these patients have suffered greatly. I don't believe they failed in their duty, even though I am certain many of them battle thoughts of self-incrimination. This could be considered a failing of the medical system, but not of the medical workers. Since this first wave, we have learned some of what works and what doesn't work in helping people with these strange symptoms.
