    I always thought the line "I begin to understand why god died" meant he understands that God died to save others and he would die and go through hard times to save others from it

    I want to add something that seem kinda curious to me:
    The song is called a car, a torch, a death.
    1-The first part he is in his car, but he is going away from her, which might suggest that it all happened after this frame, it ends when he say the first “I began to understand why god died”
    2- then it came the torch, which might be the demon and the plan of messed up her, he realize everything and wish to take the damage for her, it ends again saying “I began to understand why god died”
    3- then the death, I think she died (maybe not physically but a part of her) and she gave up to everything and that’s why she gave her heart, so then he could protect her cause she’s unable to do it for herself. In that part he felt all and finished saying again the god phrase.

    i feel like this song is about us, the clique. in all of his songs, he says he's there for us and in many interviews, he says he's so anything for us and he loves us. for me, this song is about us, and how he would sacrifice himself for us to be alright. idk

    I don't feel like Tyler is talking about a girlfriend 1) he said that Tear In My Heart is his first love song. 2) The tone doesn't quite fit for a girlfriend. I'd say it's like his best friend or maybe his sister. I don't know but to me girlfriend doesn't seem to fit here.
    Also a cool song to explain would be Cecila and the Satellite by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.

      Tyler is close with his mom, could it be about his mother's love, and how whenever he has to leave, he knows she will experience sadness?

  • @stefanimcmullin1631
    @stefanimcmullin1631 Pƙed 5 lety +4

    So I actually thought it was about him leaving home for the first time. The woman was his mother, the demon was missing him. He met the demon when he started missing her as badly as she did him. I thought this made a lot of sense considering the deep love that Tyler shows for his mother in severy of his songs.

    Sharing your inner demons with the person you love can result in dragging them down with you. When you love someone and they trust you with their heart, you will have to decide how much of your pain you'll share, since that person now hurts whenever you hurt. After having displayed dark sides of your soul, you might fear those demons will haunt that person as well. So you may on the one hand want to explain all your pain and terror to that person, but on the other hand, you know that you don't want them to have to carry that burden as well. This conflict is driving you further away from them eventhough you crave being near to them(a car). Facing those demons again, you realise you don't want that other person to suffer the same things you do(a torch).
    Eventually, you'll have to decide whether you'll choose to carry all of your baggage on your own, again, allowing yourself to hurt continuously in order to protect the other person from the pain you endure, at all times. Sacrificing that aspect of your relationship and a part of you for the sake of the other person (a death), you now understand why God died, taking responsibility for the sins of those dear to him. Having gone through this conflict inside yourself, the morning breaks and you find yourself confronted with this person's heart and trust in your hands, and you are not able to let your pain weigh down on them, so you fight your battles on your own

    This song means so much to me because a person I love was suffering with suicidal thoughts and every night they would talk to me about it I'd pray to God that he'd just send all of her thoughts to me no matter how it affected me. I can't help but tear up every time I hear it.

    I think that the 'you' is Tyler talking directly towards his fans. Tyler feels responsible for his fans heart and making sure they stay alive (as seen in many themes of his other songs). Tyler tells the story of the girl to show how important it is to him to make sure that the people he cares about stays alive.

  • @Lovelee123
    @Lovelee123 Pƙed 7 lety +13

    'but then I remember when you packed the car, you reached in the back and buckled up your heart' this gives me the impression it is someone who looks after Tyler, I mean who usually packs the car? and coz later he refers to she it makes me picture the person as his mum or gran or a similar figure in his life. The death in the title is it God's or the person on the porch? I know Tyler's mum is still alive but the 2nd time the heart is in a jar, perhaps this is actually a cremation urn?
    Maybe, probably I'm miles off

  • @KathyMoore251
    @KathyMoore251 Pƙed 6 lety +4

    My theory about this song, especially the beginning and end about the heart, is that in the beginning, he is saying he has his mother's heart, that he understands God's sacrificial love because he is willing to go on, not in the direction he wants to go, because of his love for her. At the end, he seems to have changed his perspective and realizes that his mother loves him so much that she willingly allows him to walk around with her heart, making his own decisions, regardless of her fears of what could happen and he understands God's sacrificial love from the perspective of a parent, rather than a child. I know that doesn't explain the middle part, the demon on "her" porch, so maybe it isn't completely valid, but it's what I've always thought about this song.

    • @TokyoBlue587
      @TokyoBlue587 Pƙed 5 lety

      Kathy Moore well, maybe the demon on her porch represent her fears for Tyler's safety (as a mother always worries about her children). Whenever Tyler leaves, as soon as his car disappears from her view, she begins to miss him and worry about him. But her heart is always with him, and he knows that.

    i doubt you'll read these because this video was posted three months ago but i just found your channel and ve been binge watching your twenty one pilots videos. I have thought of the meaning of a car a torch a death from both perspectives, the christain and the friend perspective. I do believe the friend perspective is a little stronger lyric wise, however, tyler has said that he's never wrote about someone before or a love (until tear in my heart) so that's why i think it may not be this meaning. Also, I don;t think he would write this about a specific person because it would hurt him to much to remember the song if that person ended up leaving him, because of his fear of abandonment and trust issues. I think both interpretations are incredibly meaningful and i respect your interpretation deeply. I just would like to share some really meaningful interpretations ive come up with from the other side of what the song could mean. I believe that the song could also be about his journey of becoming a christian. In the chorus, i think it says " i begin to understand why god died" because learning more about faith. also, this may be far fetched, but "And I begin to envy the headlights driving south
    I want to crack the door so I can just fall out
    But then I remember when you packed my car
    You reached in the back and buckled up your heart" could mean that souh, is hell, meaning maybe that he may envy people who aren't taking his route of christianity because it would be easier to just do what he wanted and to sin. But, then he remembers all that jesus has done for him and the live and sacrifice which motivates him to stick to his faith.
    "And then I felt chills in my bones
    The breath I saw was not my own
    I knew my skin that wrapped my frame
    Wasn't made to play this game
    And then I saw Him, torch in hand
    He laid it out, what he had planned
    And then I said, I'll take the grave
    Please, just send them all my way"
    this can be about the devil, or a demon and basically has the same explanation ou gave in the video.
    "The air begins to feel a little thin
    As we're waiting for the morning to begin
    But for now you told me to hold this jar
    And when I looked inside, I saw
    It held your heart" I think the were is him and god or jesus because he is acknowledging that god is there for him and he may start moving away fr god because of all his bad thoughts that come at night, but god helps him get through that.
    "The air begins to feel a little thin
    As we're waiting for the morning to begin
    But for now you told me to hold this jar
    And when I looked inside, I saw
    It held your heart" In the chrisstian perspective. I think the "miles behind him" are all the sins he has committed and he " barely feels a smile deep inside him" because he feels guilty for all those sins but then he remebers that he doesn;t have to because jesus died on the cross for his sins. '
    This is my explanation, and I think the song can go either way these are just a few thoughts.

    I think that the "her" in the story refers to his fans also going through depression and suicidal thoughts. Like he says on 'Ride' he says how he would die for us, or sometimes even harder, to live for us. So like he says that he would be the sacrifice for "her" in the song, he says he same in ride

    I know I’m a couple years late the party but I believe he is singing about a girl friend that is struggling with a mental health problem and he is feeling the torture of having to leave her to fight them on her own. The minute he leaves the demons creep in so she clearly only feels safe when he is around. Tyler wants to take all these problems from her so she feels better even if it kills him
    It a beautiful with a lot of meaning

    If I'm not mistaken, Tyler uses "south" as a good direction in many of his songs from later albums and songs.

    If you notice, there's a song on no phun intended called 'Taken by Sleep'. It talks about someone that Tyler knows that is 'gone'. I think this relates a lot to this song in how it talks about someone being gone or dying. This probably means nothing and I'm just saying stuff but whatever I really do like this song tho. I feel it's really under appreciated for all the lyrical meaning it hides.

    I have a theory about the headlights heading south. I think it could mean going to a better place, like how birds go south for the winter.

    Thanks for this explanation. I'm not a Christian so I was confused about the line "I begin to understand why God died" until you explained it, now it makes sense. I love the imagery of the song with the heart in the car and then in the jar, and it does sound like a girl dying or maybe just in pain.

    I know this is late af, but I always had the thought of it being a mother (or grandmother). He is leaving his home and moving away (going on tour, ext.) and won’t be there to protect her from either aging or death. The demon he refers to is death, and he seems to feel like his leaving is responsible for it inviting itself in. When I was a senior in high school my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, for me this song fit my narrative completely. She wants to me to go and live my own life and she’s sending her love (heart) with me but I just want to be with her and know that’s she’s safe and okay.
