  • Have you wanted to make your own maple syrup from the maple trees in your own backyard. In this video I'll show you how easy it can be. We'll also use a turkey fryer to boil the sap down and evaporate all the water to make the syrup. The whole process of boiling down the sap into syrup only took about 3 hours. This would be a great family project to help shake winter and bring on spring!
    If you already have clean food-safe buckets, here's a link to a inexpensive kit to get started:

    I don't have maples here in KS/MO but I have a crap ton of Walnut trees. I tapped 10 today, ordered another 25 taps this evening. The taps I put in today were flowing surprisingly well, I can't wait to see how this project goes. You're a huge help so far, thanks a million.

      Brent, I'm so glad to be helpful. I've been reading lately on making syrup from walnut trees, and looking for a few in my area I could tap. I've heard it makes great syrup with a nutty or almost butterscotch flavor, but have not actually tasted it myself. Let me know how it turns out for you.

    • @Digger927
      @Digger927 Před 6 lety

      Will do!

    • @Digger927
      @Digger927 Před 6 lety

      Hey man, thought I'd update ya on the walnut syrup.
      I brought in two gallons of walnut sap this morning from those original ten taps put out three days ago. Pretty slow sap production for sure. Would have had three gallons if all ten were as productive as the three or four best ones.
      Anywho, boiled it down on the stove top (all I had that worked well) and got about 8 oz of syrup out of it. It is fantastic stuff. It's certainly a lot different flavor from maple but just as good. If I had to put a description to it, I'd say it tastes like a very mild butter pecan flavor, very light. Like if you made 2:1bee feed (sugar syrup) and flavored it with a little butter pecan flavoring. I dunno, it has a good flavor and plenty of it, hard to describe it, I've never had anything like it really to compare it to. I'm pretty excited about it even though it's a lot of trouble for a low yield, I think it's well worth the effort. I'm putting the rest of the taps out this coming week and getting a turkey fryer to boil it down. Two gallons wasn't a big deal in the house but any more than that a person needs something better. Very cool!!!
      Sap production was meh but I was impressed with the yield from two gallons. I think that does work out exactly 40:1. I probably could have rendered it down a little thicker but didn't want to risk scorching it.

    That's how I used to do it. It works. Probably only cost slightly more than buying syrup, lol. We don't do it to make money though ,right. Throw off that Ice , it's water. I'll store in a couple clean rubbermade trash cans and with luck I'll get some cold days during the run and concentrate the sap by as much as half! This saves a lot of energy later. I've heard this was how natives saved on cook time.

    Practically the sap is the tree blood., that is used to make syrup. No need cut down the tree to get the sugar. It different of sugar cane, this case the cane need cut for make sugar.

    Looks good. I have use a hydrometer to test my syrup as I have noticed that if I only use the temperature method I tend to have thin syrup.

      Homesteading with the Heberts I've been meaning to pick up a hydrometer, but never think of it until I need it. My syrup is thicker now that I boil till 224 or so. I know it would be more accurate if I used the hydrometer though. Thanks for watching.😀

    The only issue is it take a 5 gallon tank to boil down 20 25 gallons so it pricey for the gas. Yes it work but wood it cheaper. Making a cinder block wood boiler is more economical. This is ok for very small amounts like 20 gallons of Sap or less.

    • @CountryFamily

      I've used sap that was a "little" foggy but if I was unsure, I would toss it out to be safe. Especially if it was that warm for a few days.

    • @CountryFamily
      @CountryFamily  Před 6 lety +4

      +Steve Stoltz any maple will produce sap you can make into syrup. Sugar maples have a higher sugar content and therefore takes less sap to make the same amount of syrup as say a Norway maple or Silver maple. It all tastes great though. Good luck and thanks for watching.
