  • The vehicle is a 2008 Toyota RAV4 with the 3.5-liter V6 2GR-FE. Unlike the 4-cylinder 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE, this alternator is a very tight fit, and tricky to remove. If you thought removing the alternator from an earlier generation V6 like the 1MZ-FE or the 3MZ-FE from a Highlander, Sienna, Camry, or RX300 was difficult, then you ain't seen nothing yet. This video points out the three mounting points for the alternator as well as engine components that must be moved out of the way for access.

    Dude, I’ve been watching so many videos as I replace my 2007 V6 Rav alternator and your method was the only one I could get it out with, without having to take any part of the radiator out. Thanking God for ya tonight brother, thanks for the video!

      Thank you for your comment. I don't think many people appreciate what I wanted to show in this video.

      I 100% have been watching all the CZcams videos and I’m so confused, why are others taking the tire off and some taking off the radiator? This is for sure easiest way I don’t get the confusion

    I just changed the alternator on a 2012 rav4 3.5l today thanks to this very good video. One thing that will make your life a lot easier I found out was on that 3rd hidden bolt is to remove the heat shield to the right which has 2 screws on top and 1 on the right front bottom then lift it up and to the right. By doing this you have full unstructured access to the bolt head and can use an extension to remove it. I have large hands and was able to finger tighten it first when installing it back with no problem. Hope this may help someone else and again thanks for taking your time to post this video friend!

      Thanks for your comment. This heat shield must be a thing on the newer 2010+ models, I don't recall dealing with it on the earlier cars. Unless you arre referring to the heat shield on the exhaust manifold.

      @@Merryfrankster_ Yes the one with the hand with a X thru it. You don't have to remove the sensor just take the bolts out and turn up to the right. I did notice a few things different on the 2012 vs the one you worked on but it was still easy after watching your video.

      Did you remove the alternator from the bracket, or did you remove the alternator with the bracket still attached?

    Thanks so much. Your video was the only one that showed where the third hidden bolt was located. I was about ready to give up until I saw your video. I took off the manifold cover and that made it easier to get to that 3rd bolt. Thanks so much.

      What’s the wires that are attached to the bracket on the 3rd bolt with the bracket? I can’t even remove the clip for the wires 😬

      @@mrluxta They go to the crankshaft sensor. And if you don't EITHER: do what this guy did and unbolt the bracket from the alternator OR disconnect the wire harness from the bracket, YOU WILL RIP OUT THE RED AND GREEN WIRES GOING TO THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR (ask me how I know).
      Once you rip these wires out (and you still installed the alternator and zipped everything back up), the car WILL NOT START and you're left with:
      Either take the alternator out AGAIN...and get down in there and reconnect those wires OR somehow unbolt the AC compressor to move it 5" out of the way so that you can hopefully reconnect the red/green wires to the crankshaft sensor. Haven't done this yet...may just rip the alternator out again.
      And of course Toyota stealership wants 5 shop hours to fix stupid red/green wiring (for about $1000). Sigh.

      Either M8x1.25 or M10x1.25. Just measure the bolt is it 8mm or 10mm. I am leaning M10.

    How did you get the alternator out with that A/C line right on top of it without removing the radiator? It seemed to be impossible.

      @@Merryfrankster_ Thank you Frank! Appreciate it. I will try that. What I am afraid of is the A/C might be bent/broken because it is rigid. I was working on my alternator for days but that A/C line was in the way and I could not pull the alternator out. The service manual said the radiator must be removed in order to take out the alternator but I have been trying to do it without removing the radiator. Do you think the other end of A/C line (at the firewall going into the car) can be swiveled? Thanks again!

      @deanellis7009 Před 4 měsíci

      I loosened up the front grill and bumper on the front left and that allowed me to pull the radiator forward making just enough room to get the alternator out without moving the AC line or removing the whole radiator.
