Why is home plate in baseball shaped like a pentagon?

Have you ever wondered why the HOME Base has that pentagon shape and not square like the other bases?
Well, home or home plate is the place where most of the excitement of baseball is focused, where the winning run is scored or where the out is achieved with a strikeout. That point on the field is also a base but it is different from the other three, and here comes the question: why is home plate a pentagon and not a circle triangle or some other shape?
