The NFL needs a league-wide throwback week, not just a couple teams here and there

@@ColeridgeBernardStroudIV Except for the graphics, the AFL 50th Anniversary year kinda did that in games between the original teams from the AFL. I did really like that because it's something we haven't seen done before with both teams wearing throwbacks AND the refs wearing the AFL ref uniforms.
Would the Panthers, Jaguars, Texans and Ravens be on bye since they're too young? The Jags are the only one of the group to have major jersey changes
Eagles Kelly Green and Seahawks 90s blue are genuinely some of the best jerseys I’ve ever seen in the NFL, and I’m thankful we got to see throwbacks of them this year

I’ve long stated the lowest hanging fruit for the NFL marketing dept. is to do “throwback” Thursday for TNF games and have both squads wear the retros 1x a year and the team can do a whole monthlong sales campaign with the retro stuff.
i wishexactly, by now most teams have 5+ uniforms. i iwsh the lions wore the balck and blue jerseys more

definitely, this design team may have football fans but they overlook simple trends that the rest of the fan base wants.
This year's throwbacks are incredible. Seahawks, Eagles, and Bucs. Perfect and I wish they were full-time.

Nah the Bucs current uni’s are the best the franchise has ever had. All of our success came in these uniforms. I love the throwbacks and wish we can get them a few times a year, but the red & pewter is our greatest combination.
I’d love a similar video where you look at each team’s different jerseys over the years, the way you guys have done with stadiums and logos!
They did just look for evolution of nfl logos and evolution of nfl stadiums

Their 1973-78 uniforms were their best.
Was hoping to get an explanation as to why certain teams opt to not move over to the new templates. Packers still use the Reebok style unis, some teams still use the Vapor Untouchables, and some manage to somehow use multiple templates in a season. Great video though, perfect for us uniform nerds.😍
Agreed! I was hoping to hear more about this as well. The Panthers and raiders also wore the old Reebok template in the initial years of Nikes contract.
I think the eagles also wore the old Reebok fabric with nike’s logo until Nike was able to produce the shade of green they wanted.
@@InYourHouse316in the Panthers’ case it was a decision by the ownership to keep the old style of jersey. Jerry Richardson tended to always lean towards tradition and never wanted to change much. That went as far as having the NFL Shield logo at midfield as well throughout his time as owner. When David Tepper came in as owner he wanted to leave his mark as well so they switched to the new style and changed the midfield logo to the Panthers logo, as well introducing new jersey and pants combos as well. So if I had to guess, I would say the biggest reason some teams like the Packers don’t ever change anything is because it is generally a long-standing tradition of looking a certain way that they have no desire to change. I personally can’t stand David Tepper as the Panthers’ owner, but I do like the decisions he has made in terms of uniform combos and things like that. That is about the only good thing he has done for the franchise, though.
I think I remember hearing that the Packers were threatened with a fine if they didn't change their collars, and they pretty much told the NFL they didn't care and would pay it (they never had to pay it)
The packers sleeve stripes were reduced when the tight uniforms became standard.
The Nike jerseys with the white streaks at the collar shield were horrendous

That part about when teams choose what they wanna wear brings me to an interesting tidbit. In 2006, the Saints decided they were gonna wear white at "home" because they didn't know if they'd be back in the Superdome. When the Saints learned it'd be ready, they wanted to switch to black at home, but the league said they needed approval from each opponent. 5 said yes. The other 3 were the Falcons, Panthers and Buccaneers.
Didn't the Saints want to wear white because they thought the black jerseys were too loose?
It's funny how they talked about how great the color rush uni's were but most fans didn't really like them.
I sure as heck didn't.

There's absolutely no way the NFL doesn't have beef with Starter. When they went over the "wild west" days of the 90s they didn't even mention them when they were probably the most wide spread manufacturer of NFL jerseys before Nike in 1997. I felt like they didn't mention Sand Knit enough (prolific in the 80s. Even more so than Russell)
Or Wilson.
Not beef perse, Nike just has an "understanding" with the NFL that mentioning anybody else doing the same thing as them is a no go. Companies value business dealings before their own history.

Not true. They have a contractual agreement.
Russel Athletic once made uniforms for all NFL team but four in 1983.
@@akbarlebowitz8151 I think Russell might have done at least some of the jerseys for 15 teams in 1983 (Patriots, Colts, Dolphins, Jets, Oilers, Browns, Bengals, Chiefs, Broncos, Eagles, Cowboys, Redskins, Buccaneers, Falcons, and possibly the 49ers).

Meanwhile, most NFL fans all agree that the throwbacks are way better than the "new" looks. Glad you guys get all excited about new changes to the uniforms; but the NFL was built on tradition, respect for the ones who came before, sharing in that collective history, and being a part of the history that is told tomorrow. It would be nice if the uniform designers and choosers showed a little more respect to that history, instead of geeking out on just how different they can make things.

Gil Byrd, Chargers corner from the 80s #22 and father of Jarius Byrd who spent most of his career in Buffalo, actually did wear a "onsie" at one point in his career, having his jersey sewn to his pants.

When the LA Rams changed their jerseys in 2020, a huge mistake was made. I cannot stand them.
They should have gone back to their 1973-99 uniforms or the blue and whites of 1964-72 .
This was another fine piece of NFL Explained. I know these take months to put together with the filming, interviews, and graphics. Thanks for sharing. Also, thanks for spotlighting this aspect of the uniform history at 14:57. Seeing all of the various jersey manufacturing companies have their logo on various team jerseys will always be a staple of the 90's for me. I remember the 49ers had Wilson for many years, and then I think went to Adidas before the league-wide Reebok takeover in 2002. And now we have Nike.
The 1980's and early 1990's were the golden age for NFL jerseys. I knew it was over when you had teams like the Broncos and Eagles changing their uniforms, not to mention the Steelers getting rid of block numerals.
Yeah, the second half of the '90s was when uniforms began to go downhill.

@@americasteam2112 For the most part, other than their Color Rush uniforms and the white pants they wear sometimes. Their 1994-95 alternate jerseys with the star on each shoulder were okay, but they look a lot better in their regular uniforms.

The Golden Age of Pro Football Uniforms (as well as the Golden Age of Pro Football, period) was the 1960s-70s. At the very least, sleeves need to be put back on all the jerseys. The wordmarks can go, and NO MORE MONOCHROME/COLOR RUSH uniforms. Just one home uniform and one road uniform per team, to make it easier to tell which teams are playing in a game. Same for the NBA.
Yes! The constant redesigns and numerous alternative jerseys really takes away from team identity. The league just wants to find a way to sell as much merchandise as possible

Thursday Night Football should become Throwback Thursday, where both teams where throwback uniforms. And for the teams that don't have throwbacks(Panthers and Texans, Ravens and Radiers have distinctions), they can rock alternates
The Raiders do have throwbacks. Silver numbers and at the very beginning something different
@JosePerez-vz1qq I didn't know that! I remember that they had a different logo back then, but I didn't know about those changes. I did mention the Ravens and Raiders do have uniform distinctions that make throwback uniforms different than their current sets

As a jersey nut, I absolutely despise what is happening on the consumer side of things. Limited jerseys used to have stitching not only on the letters and numbers, but on certain color stripes and patters as well. The prices have gone up but the quality has declined.
I agree. This is what happens when monopolization runs rampid. Its also why I'm more and more swearing off sports gear. Funnily enough right now adidas' NHL jerseys are about the last bastion of quality left and even those are going away after this season.
