Electric YZ85 Dirt Bike - Part 4

  • In this video we are taking my old YZ85 dirt bike frame that I've had for years and converting it to electric. We are using a 72V 8000W hub motor and converting it to mid drive to solve the unsprung weight issue that hub motors have and installing the motor on the swing arm.

Gotta love the big hub, instant torque surge. Puts a smile on your face every time. More flux/field weakening will up your top speed at cost of range. Adjust your battery amps until it starts to trip your BMS and back it off a bit. Increase phase amps for more off the line and initial acceleration.

This project definitely interest me more than the others. I think small frame dirtbikes are better than larger bikes when it comes electric conversions. Just look at the market, there are tons of electric pitbikes for a affordable price. I cannot say the same for electric dirtbikes, even when made from scratch they'll still cost to much. Pitbikes/small framed dirtbikes are just awesome in general.

And use ludicrous amounts of talcum powder (just don't breathe it). It helps not only installing the tire over the tube, but also in use, because instead of chaffing and wearing down the tube inside the much harder tire, the talcum allows it to slip inside and rearrange itself more easily.

I have a Razor MX650 like that that I've modified and it is so much fun because people don't expect it to be fast but they are. A 72v 10,000w system can get you in the 60s easily on a kids toy.... If you're not going to reuse that hub motor on a rear wheel again you can shave down the outer diameter quite a bit to remove weight and the overall diameter. Your lathe should be able to fit it, I know my dad's manual Kent lathe to machine down the diameter of my 8Kw hub motor which was able to remove 3/4 inch all the qa around with sill having enough protection of the magnets. I was able to lower my mini side-by-side frame for a lower CG and have more clearance. It looks cool too when it's all silver. You gotta love that instant torque using the hub motor as a chain drive mid-mount motor. Your YZ 85 came out sweet.

Great build, really want to see how this handles in the dirt!
If you're looking for more power and top speed, go higher voltage. So a new battery and a controller will do that. The motor won't run in to trouble from a higher voltage, it will actually run cooler for the same power output (as will the phase wires). For example the 100V 250A Trampaboards VESC one is about a quarter of the volume of your current ESC and will easily double the theoretical max power and increase top speed with a higher voltage (and/or with some field weakening). Pair this with a Cycle Analyst display. I've used it in my own projects and its well worth the extra spend compared to cheaper VESC controllers. I run it at 90v +6kW peak and it is barely warm to the touch after an hour. Setup/tuning will be a bit more involved tho, but likely has a lot more knobs to turn than what you're on now. Consider it if this one happens to give up the magic smoke...
Heat buildup is a big problem for these large hubs, but injecting it with some ferrofluid and adding some cooling fins will help a lot there. Make sure to check the motor casing after some running time, ideally water/spit shouldn't sizzle away or burn a unprotected hand.. You could also look into regenerative brakes to improve on the brake performance and reduce wear.
Finally, I would be *VERY* careful with that battery as it is, I seem to recall you run it with limited or no BMS (also not sure about the cells in that thing)? This is a serious fire hazard both when charging and discharging.

My minor criticism is the look of the battery box, it's just a big flat monolith that doesn't tie into any other aesthetic or angles. Do you have a bead roller? I was thinking about "make it kustom's" channel - he's an artist with that cheap modded bead roller, and it really makes some pleasant looking detail for otherwise flat metal. Hi been watching your motorbike conversation and you have a lot of talent and vision, and the finished bike looks great. I custom make various items but I've tried welding once but was rubbish, so drill and bolt everything and fabrication. For safety would you consider using a clamp or vice when drilling as I lost a chunk from my thumb taking risks. Nice one enjoy your projects and videos. Scott

I'd love to build one of these, maybe even a 65 model size would be super fun around my house.

Great job. You have to change your grip to the handlebars. Brake with the first two fingers and hold on with the other two, please. Greetings from Argentina!!

Lock up the rear is not that easy, it basically has to stop two rotating masses. Great build, love watching your video’s!

Any motorcycle brake system worth its salt will lock up a rubber tire on pavement. If you can't lock up your brakes you got an issue. Simple hydraulics. Fluid cannot be compressed. It's hard to lift 50 tons of dirt as well but with hydraulics. You can move mountains!

One way clutch in the rear tire would make the brakes better! Not trying to stop the inertia in the “large flywheel” motor! Kinda difficult to do ! And wouldn’t have any regen capability.
    Still a awesome 😎 build 👍👍
Probably just a larger rear brake to deal with the motor.
Remember you usually pull the clutch when braking the gas pot.

Cutting that frame for the controller scares me. Need that triangulation there. Also the brakes need the right (and good quality) master cylinder. Piston size and quality is everything on that. Fun watch, thanks.
