  • Police and protesters clashed at UCLA as police moved onto the campus to take down an encampment set up by pro-Palestinian protesters. Hundreds were arrested. The clashes came as dozens of colleges struggle with how to deal with the continuing protests. Also, President Biden commented on the campus unrest, saying that while he supports peaceful protests, violence and hate speech are unacceptable. Former President Trump praised the police response at Columbia University earlier this week. NBC News' Liz Kreutz and Gabe Gutierrez report.

@@Rope_Adope I implore anyone who wants to form an opinion on these protests and encampments to seek out reporting beyond the majority of mainstream outlets, there are many people recording and documenting it on the ground: In support, in disagreement, or attempting to stay nuetural. These students are generally very well organized, they have established media liazons that are clearly expressing the demands, goals, and intentions of the protests and have done a great job at not letting agitators rile up the movement. I say this to give my observation that these protests have been extremely peaceful because these students know what is important to them and they dont want it to devolve into something that reflects poorly on their goals, and yet when you watch these mainstream outlets from every political background, they are painting quite the contradictory picture.
Yes the students are inconviencing the civil order of the universities, but that is the point of protest, and it is still their right. We do not look back at the civil rights protests in this demonizing way when they too were grounded in causing civil unrest, and we look back at events like the Chicago DNC riots in 1968 in pure shame for the police brutality towards peaceful black protestors that were in the right. Ironically the DNC is in Chicago this year and we are seeing police raid the same Columbia halls that were raided during the Vietnam war because then too students occupied them in protest.
I would also like to point out the very large presence of Jewish students and faculty that are taking part in these protests and very freely celebrating passover within these encampments. Just because people are listening to palestinian music and wearing Kiffeyahs does not mean that Jewish students are being targeted, because they are also Jewish themselves. This is all very well documented if you take the time to consume a variety of reporting before coming to conclusion.

If you look at Democratic-lead cities, they actually pass much higher police budgets than their counterparts. It was the Republican leadership who made up the lie about Democratic politicians wanting to "defund the police". Instead, Democratic leadership talked about police reform to address the glaring and longstanding disparities in police reacting to the exact same crime differently based on demographics of the suspect.
