Back in the late 50's early 60's my family lived in Philly and I remember riding these old behemoths. We loved to sit in the back seats and I can still recall the smell of electricity and the sometimes bumpy rides, especially in the winter months. Sundays were always special as my parents would buy us all those big warm, soft pretzels from a stand after Church while we were waiting for the trolley to pick us up. I miss all of that. Thanks for the video time machine trip.
Wow, this is an extremely interesting video. And, your narrative is excellent... thanks...
Absolutely I really enjoyed it😊
Born 1942 Temple hospital. Lived on Master street between 15th and 16th. 1942 to 1947/8. I remember the older trolley's that folks can see here on utube if the want to look them up. They, the PTC (Philadelphia Transportation Company) started running these (brand new at the time) on Sundays. The first one of these I saw that first Sunday my mouth fell open, so quiet and streamlined compared to the old ones. Went to Germantown High so rode on these many a winter on Germantown ave. I think the fair was $.23 cents back then I remember scranging for the pennies. I walked in the Spring/fall. The Public transportation in phila was pretty good and ,in my opinion, the best way to Vet stadium. Trolly car like this to Broad St., catch the Subway down Broad to South Philly. Then the shuttle bus to the stadium. Reverse that to back home. Left Philadelphia in 1972 as the city was going down hill. I never go there except to a Phillies or Eagles game or a concert. Great job bringing back some good memories. Thank you.😀😀😀
Hey Steve when you and your wife are in the conneticut area you should check out the seashore trolley museum and closer to massachussetts is the conneticut electric railway. Both are running museums offering rides (for a charge) on alot of different makes and styles of trolley cars. Both museums have web pages and facebook pages and alot of video posts also. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for this. Unfortunately, these trolleys are currently not running. The original reason was a reconstruction project of I-95. However, SEPTA, being the anti-trolley agency that it is, seems content on not bringing them back, despite public demand, which SEPTA seems not to care about.
You rode the 15 trolley that starts in West Philly and ends in North Philly - my old neighborhood is the West Philly terminus- I appreciate you the video.
Annabelle Greenliner is back on the job now.
(Annabelle Greenliner is the human incarnation of the trolley route 15, which my friend made the human incarnations of SEPTA vehicles, as characters for her video game franchise in the future.)
Joe's Steaks... will ALWAYS be known as that OTHER name to real Philadelphians!!!
Trolleys are so cool. Has to be weird being on the road and can’t steer the trolley!
Go to San Francisco - MUNI has a bunch of he PCC cars running on the F-Market line, which goes all the way down Market and then along the Embarcadero to Fisherman's Wharf. There is also a museum at Market & Embarcadero, which has all the technical info about the streetcars.
Ride the F Market streetcar in San Francisco. Old PCC cars that were refurbished and repainted in different cities' colors. It goes from Fisherman's Wharf to Market & Castro.
In the UK we call that a tram, a trolley bus to us runs on normal tyres needs to be steered with a two wire overhead power supply. Hope the trolley system survived covid thanks for the insite.
Great video
I hope you have the chance to ride the subway surface trolley.
That is cool
Wow awesome video thanks for sharing god bless awesome video
Hi Steve if you ever come to Canada, Toronto still Use Trolleys , some are more Modern, and others are like the Philadelphia Septas
My friend in Toronto used to get passed when I called the streetcars trams as I am from
They still are operating some of those old trolleys I like to say they have been "resto/mod'". They also operate an antique 1970 GMC commuter bus with an old 2 stroke Detroit, but only on special runs. Did you get to ride past the Navy Yard? Its cool to see all those mothballed ships and two mothballed aircraft carriers.
I wish you can do the Kawasaki trolley in Philly
Jen’s from Philly!? Wow, that’s almost Jersey! My parents were from Philly too, and my dad took us to ride the trolley cars a few times and the Frankford "L". Ever cross the Delaware on the Betsy Ross Bridge? His company poured the concrete.
It would be a real shame if the trollies were to go away. Anytime I am in Philadelphia I always like to ride the trollies
old school
These cars are the same colors as CTA'S GREEN HORNETS. Most of the time the gongs are used and only in emergencies would the horns be used.
You should find out they still got trolleys in San Francisco
i drive transit bus in Montréal and the switcher bar still in the bus this day. For scratching ice ore open vent outlet on the roof.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I sure hope trolley service remains. I'd guess the Kawasakis will eventually replace these antiques and hopefully will be ADA COMPLIANT.
that would take some getting used to driving them for sure the way people drive cars today on there phones not paying attention to driving there cars
Can these trolleys go backwards?
Hey Steve,
Do you need a CDL to drive a trolley?
No you need to be a trained and certified Trolley Car Conductor
It's a tram not a trolley steve
In Boston we called them trollies, not trams.
There called trolleys in Philadelphia as far as I know. Tram is something that runs on the broad walks in Jersey
