  • 1971 Plymouth Road Runner 426 Hemi Muscle Car Of The Week Video #63
This week, we're taking a look at a Hemi powered muscle car featuring a cartoon character in the grill. This 1971 Hemi Road Runner is a very limited production car that still retains a full-power 426 Hemi. It features outstanding details like the functional air grabber hood feeding fresh air to the 425 hp., 426 cube Hemi V-8. Inside, you will find a bench seat, a four-speed handle and little else. The exterior styling is bold with the new-for-1971 styling and the distinctive reflective stripe. It is one of many Hemi powered cars in the Brothers Collection and it is our Muscle Car Of The Week!

Still my favorite Muscle Car of the week. Love the color combo of the black with gold interior, 4 speed with the bench seat. Always loved the look of the 71-72 Road Runners. Love the one year only Road Runner grill. Correction on the mention of the ad for the 71 Road Runner stating the standard insurance is standard for the 383 and the 440 Road Runners. It is the 383 and the 340 Road Runners not the 440.Love the Muscle Car of the week series. Keep up the good work!

In 1973 my brother went to a used car lot to by a 1968 383 4 speed Roadrunner. They had a black 71 hemi Roadrunner parked next to his 68. The sales staff was doing everything they could to sell that 71 Hemi. NO ONE would buy it. They offered it for the exact same price as his 68. The 68 was a great car but damn, sure wish he had that 71 Hemi today.

I have this model because I never liked the "BOXY" 1968-1970 models. A total box. In 1971 John Hurlitz was hired by Plymouth to desin this new aerodynamic body. This car killed in NASCAR. It didn't need the Superbird body to save it on the high speed tracks. Hurlitz also came up with the greatest car of all time.....the 1970 'Cuda. These cars are ridiculously under-rated.....as it can compete with The 'Cuda. An awesome showcar.

Mopar guys, chime in. It looks like the dash vents are for an ac car, but ac was not an option on hemi cars. Also if it had strato vents there would only be two vents on the left side, and the road runner name would also be all the way to the right where the third vent is on this car. Also, there is no road runner head with the name plate on the dash. it is an earlier production car from what I can tell because it has clear front turn signals amber where later production I think, so maybe dash lay out changed mid year?

Along with a car's power, the insurers checked the age of the owner. If under 25, a muscle car owner had to fork out huge insurance premiums back from 1968 to 1971. I was around then, though a little too young to own one. But I had friends in their 20s with well-paying jobs at the nearby nickel mine. They financed their muscle cars, which meant steep monthly payments with the car as collateral. They'd drag race them weekends at a nearby track. And I've got to say, a lot of guys wrecked their cars, often with fatal results. People drank and smoked heavily back then, and the fast car crowd lived to party. That resulted in wrecks, but so did falling asleep at the wheel while driving back to the mines when the weekend was over. That era, when things were so wild and loose, will never return. I lived through it and came out unscathed, mostly due to luck.
