  • We had a long period of calm weather in Mid-July 2021 that led to ultra-clear blue oceans, water so clear that some Mackerel came in early and dined on very small whitebait fry.
    Spoons - search 'spoon fishing' on Aliexpress and it's one of the first results, an excellent and cheap metal but the hooks they give you are trash, I ordered loads of the 65mm 13g and I consider this to be the PERFECT size for medium/large mackerel, and they cast very well too. I found a pack of 100 stick-on holographic 7mm flat eyes on ebay for another £2 to add to the attraction

    It's amazing to see the mackerel so close to the shore at such shallow water

      Yes, it's a shame they're all so small, how big do they get in scandinavia? down here 40cm is a fantastic size

      @@weaverflytyer yes, 40 cm is considered as a very good size. 35 cm is common

    Nice setup mate. I go for blue Sand Eel style lures that work a treat

      I've never really thought of blue as being a good lure colour, but I'll have to give it another look
      savage gear do a really nice little 9cm plastic sandeel that I might pick up

    Fishing from shore in Newfoundland, Canada, I've found the same Atlantic Herring fry (whitebait) in the throats of our Atlantic Mackerel. I do think we get the Macs a bit bigger here though (usually around 35 to 40 cm).

    As a newcomer to bass and mackerel spinning please could you explain the advantages of using a single hook instead of a treble on the spinners/lures.

    • @weaverflytyer
      @weaverflytyer  Před měsícem

      when you have a huge number of fish using a large single hook really picks out the specimen sizes, thats pretty much the only reason, when pickings are slim a smaller treble is better

    Legal keep size varies around the coast. Its 20cm in Pembrokeshire. Some of them did look very small mind.

    Mackerel under 30 cm must be returned by law

    • @weaverflytyer
      @weaverflytyer  Před 2 lety +3

      There is a pretty interesting problem with returning mackerel, they are extremely fragile and any sort of abrasion on their skin will kill them within 30 hours (this is why they have those strange stripes, so they don't come in contact with each other in a shoal). So if I actually do catch a very small mackerel and want to stay within the law, I'd have to return the poor thing alive back into the ocean and leave it to have a very painful death. The law really needs modernising but luckily so far all of my mackerel have been over the size limit mainly because I am using a fairly large hook.

      @@weaverflytyer this has been proven to be false ,most fishermen use it as an excuse, i appreciate your method using metals with a single large hook,on a light lure rod ,that's how it should be done,not like some of your close neighbours they look like they've got beachcasting setups,complete overkill

    Some of those fish are way under legal landing size.

    • @weaverflytyer
      @weaverflytyer  Před rokem

      These were all in the legal size, besides Mackerel don't really survive being handled and returned to the sea, so yes I could have returned them but I assure you they would have had a very long and painful death. The best thing you can do is use very large spoons/hooks to pick out the big fish from the shoals which is what this video is about.
