"try to cry out in the heat of the moment, possessed by a fury that burns from inside" this actually pretty well describes how I would feel at a live Joy Division show.
I've always associated this song with the bleak atmosphere of a night hospital. The bassline and drums reminds me of a heartbeat, bam-bam, bam-bam, pulsing weakly and lost through the empty hallways until it stops and life ends. So incredibly sad. :(
Oddly enough this song reminds me of my dying grandmother. She died in an eldercare facility that was connected to a hospital. This version perfectly captures the tension of her declining mortality, in retrospect of course.
@@juergen4ever agreed same key as Truth too, had the pleasure of being backstage with New Order in 1982 and asked Bernard about Truth and asked who wrote it, and he replied him and Ian, yet I've never seen that documented??? All including Decades wrote in C D E
According to guitarist Bernard Sumner, Ian Curtis wrote “The Eternal” about a child with Down’s Syndrome who lived near him. The child was not allowed to leave his house. When, Ian moved back to Macclesfield when he was 22 he noticed how, even though his life had changed, the child’s life appeared to have remained the same, as Stephen Morris told GQ in July 2020: "He used to go and see him at the labour exchange, but you’d also see him playing in the park and he never seemed to age. He just always stayed the same."
The Eternal Procession moves on, the shouting is over Praise to the glory of loved ones now gone Talking aloud as they sit round their tables Scattering flowers washed down by the rain Stood by the gate at the foot of the garden Watching them pass like clouds in the sky Try to cry out in the heat of the moment Possessed by a fury that burns from inside Cry like a child, though these years make me older With children my time is so wastefully spent A burden to keep, though their inner communion Accept like a curse an unlucky deal Played by the gate at the foot of the garden My view stretches out from the fence to the wall No words could explain, no actions determine Just watching the trees and the leaves as they fall
I am not 100% sure but I believe this may be the 1st time they played it live. I think this may be the 1st encore and people never heard it before and minds blown. Why it's so quiet. People were ready for a dancy hit and they do this! because Joy Division! Amazing!
Wtf man why did he have to suicide man ..whats so heavy that he couldnt handle everything can be handled .......wasted greatness ..this song is no words man
this song is a masterpiece

Sometimes I truly believe that sum of.us grow out of it or grow in it until it peaks
could be a zen poem
Fuck!

Beautiful sentiment
Curiously I associate that "Eternal" with "Life Eternal" from black metal band Mayhem.
Their most tragic and yet timeless song
Choose they groon the time has come again
I'd say 'The Eternal' is tied with 'In a Lonely Place'.

so depressing and beautiful at the same time,a masterpiece!!

JDs music is not like any other music - it is in a genre of its own
This version almost has an industrial vibe going through it.
february 29 1980 Lyceum London, one of the greatest bands of all time.
my alltime fav lyric writer who knows how i feel...see y someday ian...
I wish I was there.
Great to hear a live version of this! Why do people think this is Atmosphere? It's The Eternal off Closer. Best band ever, RIP Ian.
The Eternal
Procession moves on, the shouting is over
Praise to the glory of loved ones now gone
Talking aloud as they sit round their tables
Scattering flowers washed down by the rain
Stood by the gate at the foot of the garden
Watching them pass like clouds in the sky
Try to cry out in the heat of the moment
Possessed by a fury that burns from inside
Cry like a child, though these years make me older
With children my time is so wastefully spent
A burden to keep, though their inner communion
Accept like a curse an unlucky deal
Played by the gate at the foot of the garden
My view stretches out from the fence to the wall
No words could explain, no actions determine
Just watching the trees and the leaves as they fall
as dark and emotional as it gets without being in any way pathetic, like so many other so-called new-wave or "gothic" bands tend to be. timeless.
im lucky to have this on vinyl
like wise..music of my school days!
I thought i understood some things. i listened to this version of the song: i understand nothing, i cant even cry out ...
Jesus wept on this track.
I love him....I sooooo love him!!!RIP Ian....Ur voice and songs always in my heart...
Oh ...so beautiful.
Como não não se emocionar com essa sonoridade gótica.Uma contribuição irrepreensível para o século 20!👏👏
In my time of dying, if anybody around me don't play this song, I will make sure to bring them with me to hell.
This really is great.. can definitely feel and hear The Cure (before they took off with it).
Jesus just had a massive goosebump event ❤️
Un posto speciale nel mio cuore...
Probably their finest moment live.
their best song. it should've been on the best of cd
i might just listen to that again...
The Arp Omni 2 synthesizer buzzing away beautiful see my avarter Ian Curtis playing one
and Morris molesting the hell out of a syndrum for sounds it didn't actually have but he found anyway!
Just perfect and just!

Best song on 'Closer'. So sad. Sadly never got to see them live as the gig was cancelled

Such a great lament for mom dad gregsuerobinharrymattallmy friends

Awesome!
This version is great!
Masterpiece
Esa portada lo hace más deprimente xd
@redtreefoam thanks...much appreciated...
sounds like the "low" album by david bowie in this version, that eno- ambient stuff
yes, epic!
@whatagreenday794 when was IALP in the movie Control? Don't remember that.
Impressed how the band could concentrate on playing considering someone was being loudly spanked in the background.
great version, the engineer could have removed more hiss, oh well i i will just have to do it myself when i get my copy!!
I like the hiss it’s cool
does anyone know the date this was performed live? thanks
Friday 29 February 1980.
They all clap... unaware of what would happen less than 3 months later
As if you wrote "Curtis4life"
wth man, uncool
This masterpiece is probably influenced by Holger Czukay's playing.
Wtf man why did he have to suicide man ..whats so heavy that he couldnt handle everything can be handled .......wasted greatness ..this song is no words man
Not everything
The lead singer died in 1980 .
lets hope ian isnt there
they say most suicides go to hell
-they- as in the Bible. Probably bullshit. If there exists a heaven, Ian went there.
Minus the Martin Hannett production, they're good.. but not great.
I wish I was there.
